If you have questions, please call Marie Kemmeren at LITURGY CORNER Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Nativity of John the Baptist. Why does the celebrate the birthday of John the Baptist? Because John surpasses all the prophets, of whom he is the last (CCC 523, Luke 1:76, Matthew 11:13). He goes before [the Lord] in the spirit and power of Elijah (CCC 696). John the Baptist is the one who immediately proceeds Jesus, who was sent to prepare the way. With John the Baptist, the Holy Spirit begins the restoration to man of the divine likeness (CCC 720). John dedicated his life to proclaiming the coming of the Messiah. He is the one who baptized Jesus, who was present when the Holy Spirit came down upon Jesus his confirmation, and gave his life for God. He, too, would have been a Jew and would have participated in much the same traditions as Jesus. It was understood as part of Jewish worship that only the priest could extend his hand over the first-fruits of bread and wine. It was also understood that the longawaited Messiah would extend his hands over the bread, as he did at the Last Supper. His command to do this was uttered in the context of the Passover meal, the seder. The Passover, the single most important event of the Jewish year, commemorated God s deliverance of Israel from slavery in Egypt. At the Passover meal, every Jewish family renewed its covenant with the God of Israel. (The of the Early Christians) Looking at the prescribed ritual of the seder, we see in the Gospels the closeness of the seder to the events of the Last Supper. It is at the Last Supper, the first of the events that marked the culmination of Jesus saving work, that the Passover and the Paschal Mystery come together Holy.
