2 The Baptism of Our Lord The annual season of light draws to a close. January may be quite bleak in northern climates, but the solstice has passed. Light has won out over darkness and we have celebrated the bright hope of salvation. We have ritualized once more the cherished customs of Christmas. Families, stores, and communities regularly package their Christmas décor and store it away for eleven months. For the Church, our season of birth and manifestation is not packed up and stored. The feast of the Baptism of the Lord does not tie up all loose ends of the plot or neatly summarize the mystery. It remembers one more aspect of Christmas, but it also sets the stage for the week-by-week unfolding of the mystery of Jesus through the recounting of each synoptic gospel. The evangelists present the baptism of Jesus at the start of his public life because the varied details of their accounts unveil his identity. Like the servant praised in Isaiah, Jesus has come to do God s will. He is consecrated in the Spirit. He is the beloved Son. These proclamations about Jesus summon us to fuller awareness of the paschal mystery. Through baptism we are the body of Christ, facing the same mystery of dying and rising. We too must be open to the Spirit, conscious of our relationship to God. Thus we can live a life of discipleship and begin to understand the true meaning of history. Blessings on the Family of Cecilia Strader, her daughter Antoinette and her husband Alex Vallejos For more than twenty years, the Strader Family has been organizing a really wonderful New Year s Eve Party. Every year they treat the Parish staff to their New Year s Eve Celebration. This past year it was at the Hotel Eleganté and consisted of a hors d oeuvres, cash bar, followed by a very fine buffet dinner of roast beef, chicken breast alfredo, lemon tilapia and the rest of the accompaniments and varied desserts. The ballroom was dressed most festively with beautiful table decorations complete with New Year s hats and noise makers. The live entertainment beginning at 6:00 pm consisted of a Mariachi Group serenading the tables while taking requests, then an Elvis Presley impersonator entertained us and finally the varied music style of Black Pearl (who have played for our Parish Fiestas, I believe). The Strader New Year s Eve Party is truly a wonderful, safe and cozy event. Most of the revelers have been counting on and attending this event for years. I easily recognized and visited with people from Strader Party one year ago. I was able to invite my parents and two other couples from the Parish to this really wonderful New Year s Eve event. I most highly recommend this event. Next Year you should consider contacting Cecilia or Antoinette for the details for a very nice New Year s Eve Celebration. And thank you again, Cecilia, Antoinette, Alex and Family for treating us to a wonderful party and your faithfulness to our Lord, His Church and our Parish. Dear Parishioners Our Pope Francis - The editors and contributors of the international theological journal Concilium were at the Centro Pro Unione in Rome on the evening before the new papal document Evangelii Gaudium was released. They came to launch the journal s special new issue, Reform of the Roman Curia (2013/5). The new volume features articles by more than a dozen authors who offer perspectives and suggestions on the curial reform that Pope Francis has just begun discussing with his eight-member Council of Cardinals. The authors look at reform from the historical, canonical, spiritual, pastoral, and ecumenical points of view. Their articles are fascinating. And many of the issues the Pope raises in Evangelii Gaudium are treated at great length decentralization of authority, re-definition of papal primacy and the doctrinal role of the episcopal conferences. Thomas Reese SJ, in his offering, argues that no real reform can take place if heads of Vatican offices continue to wear mitres! As long as curia officials are made cardinals and archbishops, they will act as if they are superior to the college of bishops instead of the staff to the Pope, he says. One reform Hervé Legrand OP ponders is the papal appointment of bishops around the world, a norm only since the late nineteenth century. If we exclude the Papal States, in 1829 the Pope appointed bishops in only 24 sees in the Russian and Ottoman Empires, he notes. The founders of Concilium in 1964 included such Vatican II theologians as Yves Congar, Karl Rahner, Edward Schillebeeckx (who was a professor of Father Vincent Chavez),Hans Küng and Johann Baptist Metz. Their journal has not exactly been a favourite in Rome the past few decades. The fact that they felt emboldened to come here to hold their conference is another sign the winds are beginning to blow in a new direction in the Eternal City. Robert Mickens, Rome Correspondent, The Tablet 30 November 2013 Concilium, an impressive theological journal founded in 1964 often had their meetings at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. This renown Catholic University which is the largest and oldest Catholic University in the world provided many of the Professors who were the periti or experts or architects of the Second Vatican Council. Many of these theologians would stay at our Seminary, The American College of the Immaculate Conceptions in Louvain/Leuven when attending their Concilium meetings. This is how I met Professor Peter Phan SJ who I referred to in a past parish bulletin article with the Monsignor of Dallas. Of course during the past three decades under Popes John Paul II and Benedict, this esteemed theological journal has not exactly been a favorite in Rome. Thankfully once again under Pope Francis, theologians once again feel intellectual freedom to express their theological opinions and contribute to the intellectual tradition and patrimony of the Church. Renew the power of our baptismal cleansing and fill us with zeal for good deeds. Let us hear your voice once again, that we may recognize in your beloved Son our hope of inheriting eternal life.
