2 Second Sunday of Advent Today s gospel deals with the Baptist, the herald of an extraordinary event. The evangelist reports John s cry raised in the desert. He describes his mission to us: to prepare the way, to make straight the road. After a long silence during which there have been no more signs or prophets, God speaks anew. The echo of his voice rumbles across the solitudes announcing a decisive turning point in the history of the world. In an ultimate intervention which fulfills and overflows the ancient hopes, God will come. But how? Will he show his presence like a meteor leaving a fiery trail across the lower reaches of the atmosphere before pursuing its course through the starry night? Will we only catch a glimpse, in space of a flash of lightning, and then fall once again into the darkness which covers the world? No, for this Word which erupts into time changes human history: All flesh shall see the salvation of God. But to see him we must first die to ourselves in conversion. That is John s message. It is in the midst of discordant voices of history that God makes himself heard. By its life of justice, the community of believers ceaselessly sounds forth the invitation to humanity s new exodus. Free gift wrapping will be available Midnight Mass Singers Wanted This year for the Midnight Mass of Christmas we will have a mixture of musical genre s at this Mass which is fully attended and includes visitors to our city who are looking for a Christmas Mass at Midnight. Saint Therese is one of the few Parishes in the city with a Midnight Mass at Midnight. The music will be bi-lingual. Our Sunday 8:00 A.M. Spanish Choir will be singing Christmas Carols in Spanish and leading the parts of the Mass. Gail Long will be leading a group of singers in English accompanied by Organ/Piano. Calendar Crunch We live in an era when calendars seem to rule our lives the office calendar, the school calendar, the holiday calendar, the social calendar. Not surprisingly, many of us rely more and more on technology to help us keep track of all our various obligations and responsibilities. The new Church year begins today and the scripture invites us to pause, slow down, and consider some of our core priorities as disciples of the Lord. Statistics show that, more than any previous generation in human history, we have disposable time to use how we choose. We are not tied to the unrelenting agricultural calendar of traditional farm work or to sixteen-hour days in factories., yet we often feel rusher and over committed. This all comes down to how we use our God-given time. The readings today declare that God will fulfill the promises that God has made. Until that time of perfect justice, righteousness, and salvation comes upon us we are asked to do four things: to be alert at all times, not to give in to worry and distractions, to pray for strength, and to care lovingly for one another. So, as we prepare to celebrate again the coming of the Savior, think about the stewardship of time. Think back to third grade when we learned the difference between needs and wants, and realize how much the line blurred between the two since then. Is your calendar too full? Streamline it by looking at it with an informed eye; What must you do and what would you like to do, and how can you put God first this Advent? Requiescat in Pace Our loved ones never really leave. They do hear you when you speak. I will say they love you no matter the distance. I will not deny they are in a better place. And, I will not lie they will be waiting to greet you someday They are every step you take, everything you do the air you breathe, and every beat of your heart like the wind, you can not see them, but you will always feel them. Nonelyn was six-months pregnant the night Typhoon Washi swept away her home in the Philippines. Nonelyn, her aunt and her sisters survived but had to live in a tent, where she later gave birth to her baby boy. In this precious time of hope-filled waiting, help us to seek you more intentionally and more often.
