2 First Sunday of Advent Advent opens with the proclamation of its perennial promise: the Lord will come. We enter into the season of paradox, when we celebrate the long vigil we are keeping in preparation for the one who has already come. The first Christian community lived the tension between the two comings of the Lord: that of his earthly ministry and that of his return at the end of time. In preparation for this Parousia of the Son of Man, which they believed to be imminent, they felt a necessity to establish themselves firmly in a holiness beyond reproach. But the Christians whom Luke addresses begin to witness the growth of a new awareness. Although Jesus is always present in the community and he comes for each person at the moment of death, the final coming is not yet. The wait is longer than anticipated. Therefore the attitude demanded of the faithful is one of permanent vigilance: to be ready for anything, to refuse the evil committed in darkness, to stay awake through unceasing prayer. Just as the eucharist has its goal to proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes (1 Cor 11:26), so also do vigilance and prayer open us to the coming of the reign of God. They call us to stand up and raise our heads by giving us the task of putting a name on human expectation. Your Help Is Requested The St. Therese Respect for Life Ministry is asking for your help. We are collecting new, unwrapped baby items for pregnant women in crisis, to be placed in the crib located on the Church altar. These items will be delivered to The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in Santa Fe on January 22 for the Sanctity of Life Awareness and Unity Day for donation to Project Defending Life. Also, we enjoyed listening to the voice and organ students who were studying at the shrine of St. Therese. The church is quite beautiful and the history of St. Therese is most interesting. Each year, St. Pius depends on the generosity and support of the Catholic community to make our Student Activities fund drive a success. For over twenty years, this vehicle raffle has provided the primary underwriting for team and club activities as the school. The raffle is essential for St. Pius X to meet a primary goal: to keep tuition at its lowest and make Catholic high school education available to students regardless of their ability to pay. Your support is essential if we are to continue to offer Catholic education to our youth. This year we reached our goal, raising $156,042. It would be impossible to sell the number of tickets and generate the amount of money needed without the cooperation of your parish. A typical weekend of parish sales at all Masses generates $1000, so you can see how important your participation is to us. On November 1st we drew the winning tickets after the All Saints Mass. The winning ticket was held by Rob Federici, the second prize winner for $500 was held by Betty Sleeter and the third prize winner of $100 was Julie McConnell.
