John Daniel, Vicar General (in residence) Deacon William Ennis At Our Lady of Fatima Parish we are committed to know, love and serve God through Word and Sacrament, through our shared experience as the Mystical Body of Christ, and through the call to full, conscious and active participation in parish life. Within our own parish, Our Lady of Fatima School has been fulfilling this role for 68 years. Tens of thousands of students have benefited from the education and spiritual formation they received at Our Lady of Fatima School over the years, and today s students continue to do so. The class sizes at Our Lady of Fatima School are small enough to ensure that students receive individualized attention, and students are challenged to encourage them to reach their maximum potential. Our parish school is recognized for its academic excellence and this is demonstrated by how well our students score on national tests. In addition to the basic core curriculum, classes are offered in a variety of subject areas including art, music and Spanish. There are also competitive sports even at elementary grade levels - and other extracurricular activities. Encouraging all people to model their lives on that of Jesus, Pope Francis has said, The life of Jesus is a life for others. It is a life of service. There are many service projects undertaken by the students at Our Lady of Fatima each year. They include such activities as raising money for the relief of victims of natural disasters, donating time at the Roadrunner Food Bank, or bringing canned goods to the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry to help feed the hungry in our community. Every service project encourages our students to understand that what we do for others in need, we do for Christ. Finally, and most importantly, faith is an integral component of our school experience. Each day begins and ends with prayer. Matters of our Catholic faith are freely discussed within the classroom. Religion class is taught daily and our 3 rd grade students are prepared to receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation (Confession) and First Holy Communion. Our weekly School Mass takes place at 8:15 am on Wednesdays, and students serve as lectors, the choir, cantors, and altar servers, as well as bringing up the bread and wine at the Offertory. There are also opportunities for Eucharistic Adoration, praying the Rosary, Stations of the Cross during Lent, and many other faith-related activities. Whether it is in the area of faith, knowledge, or service, Our Lady of Fatima School is truly a treasure within our parish. I invite all parents and grandparents of our parish community to seriously consider Our Lady of Fatima School for your children or grandchildren. It is one of the greatest gifts you can Continued on Page 3 CELEBRATE CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

For the year of 2017, a total of 186 parishioners/families (25% of our registered families) made a pledge to the ACA. Pledges came to $61,133. Of this total, $59,260 was actually paid, leaving unpaid pledges totaling $1,873. Since our assigned goal was $46,000, a total of $13,260 was rebated back to the parish. Many thanks to all who made and fulfilled their pledge in Your paid pledge supports the continued ministry of Christ in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, and the rebated portion supports the ministry within our own parish. ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL 2018 Archbishop John C. Wester will be sending a letter within the next few weeks to each registered family in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe asking for support of the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). If you receive this letter, please respond with a generous heart to sustain the ministries, programs and services provided by the Archdiocese to parishes and those in need. During February you will be given another opportunity to make an ACA pledge when the parish conducts an ACA Appeal during Mass. Feast of St. Blaise Blessing of Throats The Feast of St. Blaise is on Saturday, February 3 rd. The traditional Blessing of Throats will take place after the 7:30 am Mass. Ash Wednesday February 14 th Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on February 14 th. There will be four Masses with distribution of Ashes that day, at 6:30 am, 8:15 am, 12:10 pm, and 6:30 pm. The distribution of ashes will take place after the homily. Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, all Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are bound by the rule of fasting. This means consuming only one full meal on those days. Two smaller meals are permitted, as necessary, to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid food between meals is not permitted, unless a small amount of food is needed for taking medications. Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all of the Fridays during Lent by all Catholics 14 years of age and older. Fasting and abstinence are intended to be penitential in nature a sacrificial action in atonement for sin. Fasting and abstinence also enables us, in some small way, to stand in solidarity with the poor throughout the world for whom hunger is a daily reality. Stations of the Cross and Lenten Soup Suppers At 5:30 pm on Friday evenings during Lent (except Good Friday) the parish will be hosting a simple meatless Soup Supper consisting of soup, bread and butter, and beverage. A different ministry of the parish will prepare the soups each week. The soup suppers will be held in Fatima-Gallagher Hall. There is no charge for the meal. The meal will be followed by praying of the Stations of the Cross in the church at 7:00 pm. Everyone is invited to participate.

4 January 28, 2018 Page 4 Directives from the Archdiocese of Santa Fe This year, influenza (flu) is widespread in 46 states in the U.S. New Mexico is one of the states listed by the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as having widespread flu outbreaks. The archdiocese prays for those who are sick, and we pray for those whose deaths are attributed to the flu. In a recent report, the CDC mentioned this is the first year the entire continental U.S. is at the same level of flu activity at the same time. This year there has been a 5.8% increase in laboratory-confirmed cases over last year. Due to the severity of the flu season, the archdiocese will be taking the following steps in regards to the celebration of Mass: During the Sign of Peace, instead of shaking hands or hugging, as is practiced in some parishes, it would be best to simply nod your head and avoid bodily contact. When praying the Our Father, please do not hold hands. Simply extend your hands toward Heaven or fold your hands. Holy Communion will not be received under both species, just the Consecrated Host, not the Chalice. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should wash their hands just prior to distribution Holy Communion and should wash them immediately after distribution. If it is easier, an anti-bacterial gel can be used. If you are sick, sneezing or coughing, it would be best for you to stay home. You are welcome to take advantage of the Sunday TV Masses which are available in English and Spanish. It is not a sin to miss Mass on Sundays if you are ill. Please pray for all who have lost their lives as a result of the flu and may we do our part to prevent its spread. These directives will be revoked when the situation improves. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL MINISTRY January 28 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time: In the Gospel today we read that because Jesus spoke with authority his reputation spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee. As his disciples, we can also speak with authority when we put our faith into actions by helping the poor and suffering.
