Greetings What s Happening This Week Welcome back for. I hope that you had a great holiday with your children. Before you know it Christmas will be here. (67 days as they are all shopping days now). We have started this term with a roll of 216. Room 11 now has 12 New Entrants in it. This means we have had 36 New Entrants now this year. We know of two more still to come. In Terms 1 and 4 the children must wear the uniform sun hats. These can be purchased from The Warehouse or Postie Plus. If your child hasn t got one please purchase one this week. Swimming begins on Monday October 30. Please ensure that you have paid the $48.00 by Wednesday of next week if you wish your child to be part of the lessons. Those who will not be swimming will be supervised in another class. We need adult assistance with supervision. If you can help please let your child s teacher know. The swimming timetable is elsewhere in the newsletter. Room 7 s upgrade was completed during the holidays. Thank you to the PFA who have donated $ towards this. The room looks great and is much appreciated by the teacher and children. Congratulations to Rorie Poff who performed with distinction at the Para Games in Auckland during the holidays. He competed in the swimming and played wheelchair rugby and basketball. I hope that you all have an enjoyable Labour Weekend. 4 From the DRS A Message From the DRS We begin our RE programme learning about the traditional prayers of the church, including the Mass responses. October is the month Catholics dedicate to the Holy Rosary. The Rosary follows the life of Jesus, from the time the Angel Gabriel told Mary that she was to be the mother of Jesus, through his life, passion, death, resurrection and glory. The Rosary also honours Mary. For more information on the Rosary and the mysteries of the Rosary look at this website: Catholic Online Our next RE learning is the Communion of Saints Strand, which ties in with All Saints and All Souls Days (1 and 2 November). During this strand we learn about Mary and her role as the Mother of God, Saints as Inspiring People, making positive life-giving choices, and Life, Death and Christian Hope. As staff we have written an overarching statement from the theological foci for this strand. Catholics believe that those living now and those in heaven are the Communion of Saints Te Kotahitanga o te Hunga Tapu. The Communion of Saints Te Kotahitanga o te Hunga Tapu are those who are engaged in prayer and praise of God. They believe human life is tapu and that we are made in the image of God. Chief among the saints is Mary. Mary, Assumed into Heaven, is the patron of New Zealand. When we die it is not the end. At death we face a particular judgment based on our response to God during our life. The three outcomes are: fullness of new life Heaven, a time of purifying Purgatory, or isolation from God Hell. Revelation tells us that there will be a Second Coming of Christ, a time of renewal and bodily resurrection. As we finish our academic year the Liturgical Year begins with Advent. We will also spend some time learning what happened at the first Christmas and how we should respond to Jesus coming. From time to time your child may bring home activity sheets they have worked on in class. Please talk to your child/ren about their work and share in their learning. We continue to join in the life of the church by attending 9am Mass every second Friday (Weeks 1, 3, 7 & 9), and on Thursday in Week 5 (due to Show Day). Thank you for your support in ensuring your child/ren arrive at school by 8:45am on these Fridays so we can be seated in church before Mass starts. You are welcome to attend Mass as well. We also appreciate your support with our RE programme. Dates for your diary: Wednesday 1 November All Saints Day Mass at 9am. Sunday 26 November School Mass beginning at 10am. 5 Congratulations Room 1 Max: You have put huge amounts of effort into improving all areas of your learning and you are always very helpful and responsible. Allaina: You are a very motivated learner, who always does her best and you always show the mercy values. Room 9 Isla for being a reliable, responsible, respectful and allround wonderful person in our class! And for learning to hear where the full stops go in her writing. Lachlan for working hard at improving your reading skills and making excellent progress. Room 11 Room 4 Sofia for preparing and sharing a well informed and well researched speech about soccer. Well done! Eric for the way you confidently shared your speech. It was wonderful to see your passion about your speech topic come through in your delivery of your speech! Well done! Room 6 John - for working hard to write and prepare your speech for presenting to the class. You showed commitment and perseverance. Ka wani kei! Leon - for the work you put into writing your speech and practising to improve your presentation skills. Tino pai Room 12 Jairon - for your enthusiastic participation in Maths. You willingly share your ideas and strategies, using great Maths language. Keep up the good work! Adrian for your special talent in Geometry. You are skilled with shapes, symmetry, cross-sections and viewpoints! Well done! Roslynn for learning lots of new words for reading and writing Noah for participating well and learning lots about Healthy Food Room 10 Rover for learning all his sight words. Principal s Award Michael: For his excellent attitude to all areas of school life. Michael consistently lives out the Mercy Values. He has a wonderful work ethic and always does his best. Michael is patient, helpful, supportive and respectful in his relationships with others. He is a student we are very proud of. Ryan for learning all his letters and sounds.

7 PFA Sausage Sizzle Roster -. The roster for is on the noticeboard in the office. Please add your name to any date/s you would be available to help. If you would like to volunteer, but do not know what to do, have a chat to the ladies taking orders on Friday morning in the creative space from 8.30am. Quiz Night Friday 3rd November - get together a team for a fun evening or come along and be part of a team. $10 per person. Tickets can be purchased from the school office. VILLA MARIA COLLEGE Villa Maria College - Placement Test This year our Placement Test for new entrants to Year 9, 2018 is being held on Tuesday 24 th October from 8.45 a.m to p.m. If girls are not able to attend Villa will organise a catch up day. Please let the College know.

8 We are collecting sets of Little Gardens to sell to raise money to buy more beanbags for classrooms. If you have any spares can you please bring them to Room 10. Thanks Mrs Stack DIVA RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS Rhythmic Gymnastics is a combination of ballet, dance and gymnastics that uses handheld apparatus like the ribbon, hoop, clubs and ball. It is great for confidence, strength and flexibility. We emphasise fun and fitness it is fantastic for developing co-ordination. We have classes for girls ages 4 and above for recreational and competitive classes. We run classes for nationals levels 1-10, group pre-international, junior and senior international grades where gymnasts can compete for club, Canterbury and New Zealand teams. There is a high level of coaching available to all, I am the head coach and teach all levels from recreational through to world cup rep senior international. So if you are looking for fun, friends and fitness or a shot at top level gymnastics Diva RG is the place to attend. We are based at The NZ Institute of Sport building in the main gymnasium at 66b Wharenui Road, Riccarton.
