The Chaplet of Divine Mercy is also prayed every morning after the 8:30 am Mass, Monday through Thursday during the school year and additionally after the 8:30 am Mass on Friday mornings during the summer months. 4 Dear Folks, Today is the annual Ministry Fair for the parish where folks from the many apostolic programs offer a public invitation for you to join them. In the parish council meetings I ask three questions of the committees: What are doing? What do you need? And what is your dream? With the right spirit we can do anything. The future lies in front of us with multiple invitations for discipleship in the many apostolates. The future looks good. Today is also the fifteenth anniversary of the Terrorist Attack on New York and Washington. It began as a Tuesday not unlike any other day until the malice of pure evil in cooperation with an errant humanity that sees evil as good and good as evil, struck the hearts and souls of all of us. It was not the first time to happen in history and it won t be the last. Evil is a reality and it is more than the contemporary mindset, that ignores it as force, power, or phenomenon, can handle. Evil is a person and it is formally here and will be here until the end of the world. In the times we live we need to rise above the standards of the recent generation we have always addressed as the greatest generation. The standards of Faith and Morals we are called to live and share have to rise above the levels of our predecessors. The challenges once experienced in foreign wars are now with us in our very homes. What to do? Let us reclaim what we do best Pray (Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet, Simple Personal Prayer in Adoration) Let us reclaim how we respond as the best Serving in Charity. Let us return to what we need most Family Life promoted by credible fathers and mothers who are the greatest compliment of each other in happy marriages. Failure is not an option for us in the world we find ourselves. A heroic generation needs the graces offered by the Almighty. A heroic generation needs a mission to others that is truly rooted in discipleship. And a heroic generation will collapse in the absence of real family life. The charism of family life creates life in many facets and it sustains life in many more. Now is the time for many, many more to join in the education apostolate of the parish. Let us remember the call to Know, Love, and Serve the Lord. CCD and Catholic adult education programs complimented with the school kids as well as homeschoolers need to take a center position in the life of the parish. Now is the time for all of us to join the adoration society of the parish. Prayer, Prayer, Prayer. Let us come together and pray for the parishioners serving in the military. Some you may remember as altar-boys and readers at Mass. Or from the parish youth groups or scout programs and basketball players from our school. Prayer is everything for us. Now is the time to respond in our devotions to Mary in the Legion of Mary and the Men s support group, promoted by Fr. Fimian. Now is the time to seriously look at the apostolic work offered through our St. Vincent DePaul Society. They are members of the parish who actually visit the Poor in need of assistance in the homes of the needy. A very hard apostolate. Now is the time to seriously look at the good work offered in the Knights of Columbus and women s auxiliaries. They are heroes and heroines who unite us to the places of devastation found in Staten Island years ago and now Louisiana. Character starts at home and it begins with teenagers. And there are many others who serve the Lord long and hard in His name and person. Many thanks for the many who have done so much through the years and many more who will join them. 5 Greetings, I hope all is well with you and yours. Mrs. Copeland (pre-school director) and I will have a booth set-up from7:30-12:00pmonsunday, September 11for the Ministry Fair. If you would like some additional information about SJES, please know that we would be happy to discuss all that St. John the Evangelist has to offer! Secondly, we will host our annual Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 14th at 7:00pmin Trinity Hall. The PTO will discuss their current financial status and elaborate on some upcoming events and fundraisers aimed at generating additional income for future school initiatives. After my brief presentation, parents will have the opportunity to visit their child/ren classroom and learn about the curriculum and other educational opportunities that are available at SJES. Our first round of online standardized testing will begin on Monday, September 11th. Please aid our instructional efforts by ensuring that our students are present, focused, and well-rested. This will act as a baseline so we can monitor student growth over the first semester, these results will serve as a resource to recognize strengths and identify potential areas for growth. May we continue to grow in God's grace and wisdom. St. John the Evangelist Preschool/Pre-Kindergarten: We hope all of our Preschool families are enjoying this last bit of summer!! The Preschool Office hours starting Monday, August 22 nd are Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 12pm. St. John Preschool has spaces available in the 4 Day and 5 Day Pre-Kindergarten (4yr/5yr old program). For questions or inquiries, please contact the Preschool Office at Just a reminder that "Meet the Teacher Morning" is scheduled for Thursday, September 1 st from 9:00am-10:00am for the 3Day Preschool and all Pre-Kindergarten students and 10:00am-11:00am for the 2Day Preschool students. We look forward to the start of an exciting new school year. St. John s School Extended Day Program is looking for staff members for their morning and afternoon programs. The morning shift runs Monday- Friday 6:15am until 8:00am and the afternoon shift runs Monday-Friday 2:45pm-6:00pm. Starting wage is $9/hr. Applicants must be at least 18yrs of age & complete VIRTUS training. Staff will be trained in CPR and First Aid. St. John s Cross Country Announcement The St. John s Cross Country team will begin practices on Tuesday, September 6from3:30-4:30 pm. The team will meet for practice at St. John s School on September 6and all subsequent Tuesdays and Fridays (on early dismissal days, practice will run from12-1:00 pm) up until the CYO Championship Meet in late fall. We welcome girls and boys from the school and parish community from grades 3-8 of any ability level. The St. John s Cross Country team affords the unique experience of achieving personal running goals as well as contributing to our team success at the CYO Championship Meet. Last year, with our group effort, St. John s brought home several CYO trophies and we look forward to similar results this year! St. Johns is in need of additional volunteers to serve as lectors for the Saturday evening and Sunday Masses. The Saturday Mass is at 5:00pm and the Sunday Masses are at 7:30am, 9:00am, 10:45am and 12:30pm. 6 Religious Ed Parents are expected to read the bulletin each week and to check the parish website to stay informed of upcoming events. All students in grades 1-12 who are not attending a Catholic school should be enrolled in RE classes. We offer Kindergarten classes during all 4 sessions. Please check the website for updates on class availability. These classes are now full: Sunday, Session A Grades 1, 2, 4, 5, 7 & 8 Monday, Session D Grades 6, 7 & 8 Registrations are still being accepted for all grades in Sessions B (11am on Sundays) and Session C (3:45pm on Sundays)! We are Catholic lay people from various walks of life, mothers, fathers, single, nurses, lawyers, writers, etc. What do we do? We meet in fraternity once a month to pray & study the rule given to lay people by St. Francis himself and to support each other in Gospel living. Interested? Come and See! Through a process of discernment, prayer, education, and sharing with others on the journey, these adults prepare to become Catholics and the entire SJE parish community rejoices with them. Preparation sessions are held on Wednesday evenings in the St. John School s Art Room from 7 to 8pm. Classes have started but you are welcome to join us now through the weeks after Easter. Legion of Mary A Catholic Lay apostolate that performs both spiritual and corporal Works of Mercy. Meetings are Monday morning at 9:45 AM in Mercy Hall, Monday evening at 7 PM in the Parish Center and 4:45 on Friday afternoon for children in the Parish Center. 7 Are You Interested in Learning more about the Bible? New this Year! Study the Bible at your own pace and at home. Parishioners, family and friends, and even new friends can sign up to watch the videos online and get together for discussions at any time and place they wish. The bible studies to be made available are listed below. Whenyou visit the parish website and click on the Adult Bible Study picture it will take you to a page with available studies. Then click on the title of a bible study and you will find the link to sign up for the Bible studies that St. John's is making available. Once you log in and purchase the study materials, you will be able to watch the videos at your convenience. Please look for future studies in upcoming bulletins and on the parish website. These Studies were designed to form a solid foundation for an ongoing parish Bible Study program. We hope to add other studies in the future. If you have any questions, please call the Religious Ed office at x209. The first Study, started in October, was The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation. The 24 lessons in The Bible Timeline guide the student of Scripture through the reading of the biblical narrative. In 2013, Matthew: The King and his Kingdom, another 24-part study, was the follow-up to the Scripture narrative in The Bible Timeline. The gospel of Matthew explores the life and mission of Jesus. Following Matthew was Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom **in This study shows how the Church continued the work of Christ after the coming of the Holy Spirit. ** Available here soon In the early summer of 2015 we offered Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother in one day. This study is an extraordinary pilgrimage that reveals Mary's unique role in God's Kingdom and in our lives. In the fall of 2015 Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come an 11 part study showed us how the kingdom established by Christ in his Church is intimately connected with the kingdom of heaven. In this study you will discover what the mysterious figures and images of Revelation mean. You will see how Revelation is more than an apocalyptic vision of the "end times." It is a revelation of God as our Divine Bridegroom and the Church as his spotless Bride, forever united in a heavenly, holy, and mystical marriage that we enter into every time we celebrate the Mass. In 2016 the Bible Study group covered James: Pearls for Wise Living described as a book of wisdom. James is a compilation of teachings intended to help the fledgling church in the face of persecution. All over 55 are welcome. We meet the first Friday of each month at Mercy Hall at 9:15am. Going from rescue to recovery efforts comes with a whole new set of challenges to try and regain, rebuild and move on. The residue of mud laden homes and business has now become factories spewing out lethal germs, bacteria and viruses. As muddy waters dry some will spawn mold spores to further challenge recovery efforts and directly affect families and individuals. What you can consider now is supporting the ongoing Council s online effort to send concentrated germicide packs to the Catholic Charities in Baton Rouge and a planned second collection of goods by donating what you can. Ted Bertagni of Cross Catholic Outreach commissioned by Pope Francis in Rome as a Missionary of Mercy, will be visiting our parish this weekend. He will speak at all the Masses on behalf of the poor in developing countries. What a blessed occasion to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. THE WOMEN OF ST JOHN greatly appreciate the support that the parish has always given to all of our previous collection drives. The schedule of collections is the following: September and October sundries (sample size soap, shampoo, cream rinse, and hand lotion) October and November hats, mittens, gloves, and socks, for school age children December and January calendars These items are distributed to elementary schools, shelters, nursing homes and other organizations serving those in need. Last week, we discussed getting to know ourselves from society s standpoint vs. our own standpoint (and, of course, from God s standpoint), and how we can best use our gifts to serve Him. A discussion and teaching that will focus on the culture s secular social mores in light of Catholic moral teaching.
