3 Dear Folks, Just a quick note before I leave for vacation in the morning. One of the Confirmation students was in this afternoon for his required interview. As is the case with most, if not all the students, I ask why they picked a certain saint for their confirmation name. One mentioned he picked a patron for athletes because the kid was a wrestler. A wrestler, I judged the kid to be less than the 98 pound minimum. He liked his saint because he was humble. I thought to myself, Now did you hear that self a humble athlete? Could that ever be the case? I thought on it for a moment and said to myself, Most definitely. I told the kid the story of meeting Muhammad Ali at Reagan National Airport one night, back in the late 80 s. He was a mountain of a man, impeccably dressed, and quite alone. Without a doubt one of the most handsome men I had ever met. Not a scar on him. No tattoos or earrings. Dressed in one of New York s finest tailor made suits and brown mohair coats. A family of five could have fit in that coat. There were no body guards, no females on the arm, no screaming fans with flashing phones. Just himself and this foolish priest with simple suit and mohair coat from Pakistan, of course. But I digress. We turned to each other and he spoke first. Good evening Father. Now the question of the day. How do you address one of the greatest athletes of all time? Good evening Mr. Ali. The conversation probably carried four or five minutes with all the same niceties that I exchange with our parishioners Where do you live? Where are you from? I told him I was from a large family with nine kids, the youngest adopted from Korea. It was a simple exchange maybe even a little boring to some folks but not without a great deal of humility. He was interesting but also interested in talking. There were questions I wanted to ask but was dumbfounded. I would have asked about his family. How many wives and how many kids? I would have asked what church he belonged to as a child that guided him to have multiple wives and kids. (Four Wives. Nine Kids) Now that would have been interesting. I would have asked him why he was flying United and not his own jet. I would have shaken his hand just to see how big it really was. In the end as we parted he said, Good night Father. And I said, God bless you Mr. Ali. Without a word, he smiled, nodded his head and went off. He would never remember me but would most likely remember the priest at the airport. I hope the Confirmation kid makes a great wrestler. By the look and build of his father I think that is a given. But more than that I hope the kid remembers the meaning of humility in his confirmation name. Humility and Faith are good features to display and defend in the future generation. Let us pray for one another. (Note Well The Feast of the Assumption falls on Monday this year and is not a holy day of obligation since it falls so close to Sunday. Nonetheless, we will host an extra Mass at 12:30 PM. All are welcome. But, if you miss we don t need to see you in the Box the following Saturday. I know she will be very grateful for the gift that was sent to her on behalf of our parish community. Please pray for her as she embarks on this new and challenging endeavor! Preparation sessions are held on Wed. evenings in the St. John School s Art Room from 7 to 8pm, from September through the weeks after Easter. Pre-printed St. John s RE Family registrations forms are available at the parish office. Religious Ed volunteers are still needed for the upcoming year in all sessions. The Arlington Diocese will be offering its MASTER CATECHIST TRAINING PROGAM beginning the fall of The Master Catechist Training Program consists of 2 years of formal study and is open to experienced catechists who are ready to deepen their involvement in the catechetical ministry of the Church. In the program, candidates grow in their faith through instruction, days of prayer, peer mentoring, and spiritual direction. After completion of a two-year program, candidates will be certified as Master Catechists, qualified to provide catechetical training in parishes. Parishioners, family and friends, and even new friends can sign up to watch the videos online and get together for discussions at any time and place they wish. The bible studies to be made available are listed below. Whenyou visit the parish website and click on the Adult Bible Study picture it will take you to a page with available studies. Then click on the title of a bible study and you will find the link to sign up for the Bible studies that St. John's is making available. Once you log in and purchase the study materials, you will be able to watch the videos at your convenience. Please look for future studies in upcoming bulletins and on the parish website. These Studies were designed to form a solid foundation for an ongoing parish Bible Study program. We hope to add other studies in the future. If you have any questions, please call the Religious Ed office at x209. The first Study, started in October, was The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation. The 24 lessons in The Bible Timeline guide the student of Scripture through the reading of the biblical narrative. In 2013, Matthew: The King and his Kingdom, another 24-part study, was the follow-up to the Scripture narrative in The Bible Timeline. The gospel of Matthew explores the life and mission of Jesus. Following Matthew was Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom **in This study shows how the Church continued the work of Christ after the coming of the Holy Spirit. ** Available here soon In the early summer of 2015 we offered Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother in one day. This study is an extraordinary pilgrimage that reveals Mary's unique role in God's Kingdom and in our lives. In the fall of 2015 Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come an 11 part study showed us how the kingdom established by Christ in his Church is intimately connected with the kingdom of heaven. In this study you will discover what the mysterious figures and images of Revelation mean. You will see how Revelation is more than an apocalyptic vision of the "end times." It is a revelation of God as our Divine Bridegroom and the Church as his spotless Bride, forever united in a heavenly, holy, and mystical marriage that we enter into every time we celebrate the Mass. In 2016 the Bible Study group covered James: Pearls for Wise Living described as a book of wisdom. James is a compilation of teachings intended to help the fledgling church in the face of persecution. Brenda Warren, our devoted President, passed away in May, leaving a real void in our ministry. Brenda set an example for all of us with her compassionate attitude and her unfailing drive to serve as Jesus served. We ask that when you remember the less fortunate in your prayers, you remember Brenda and all who serve the poor. From January 1 through June 30 of this year, your generosity allowed us to serve many families who visited our pantry, as well as 69 individuals/families who needed assistance with rent, utilities or special situations. We made payments in the amount of $20,661.00, working with your generous donations that amounted to $17,366 during the first half of the year. God bless you!
