4 Dear Folks, First things first, Mrs. Phyllis Teague, parishioner extraordinaire, was just in reminding me of the devastation that has befallen our brothers and sisters in West Virginia. Today s second collection will be offered to the suffering families who have lost so much in the recent floods. Our contact folks have informed us that the West Virginians appreciate the thought of clothes and furniture but they would rather have money to rebuild their homes. I beg, for those unseen and unknown to us that you be most generous to this important collection. Let us pray for one another. Following the 12:30 Mass we will have a parish welcoming for our new parochial vicar, Fr. Kevin Fimian. It will take place in Mercy Hall. All are welcome. Let s all be on our best behavior as the priest s good mother is coming to join us. She is coming up from Virginia Beach for the big event. God bless one and all as we step into the throes of Summer. Ah, hot and humid. Kind of reminds you where you don t want to go. But I digress. God bless all the young ones just returning from the Diocesan Work Camp. Many thanks goes out to the many adults of the parish who invested so much of their time and efforts. You are terrific for example, when I went down to the Work Camp to hear confessions on Tuesday night I was met by a mass of exhausted adults and teens. And who would be surprised seeing them sleeping on the hard floor each night and working in the hot sun each day. God bless the ones who were replacing roofs and changing out window frames in the heat of the day. Yes, I say again, God bless them one and all. Well done. All that said. 5 Greetings: I hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend, it is always a nice time to reflect on the many sacrifices made so that we may enjoy our freedom. I am thrilled to be back at St. John the Evangelist School! God has been very good to my family and I and we are blessed to once again join the school community of St. John the Evangelist. We are continuing to accept admissions for the school and are currently close or at capacity in the following grades: K, 1, 2, and 6th grade. We thank you for your sacrifices so that our students can receive a Catholic education. I look forward to strengthening relationships with each of our school and parish families. RCIA: Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults: Please contact the Religious Ed Office at x209 if you are interested in becoming Catholic or if you are an adult who needs to be confirmed. Through a process of discernment, prayer, education, and sharing with others on the journey, these adults prepare to become Catholics and the entire SJE parish community rejoices with them. Preparation sessions are held on Wed. evenings in the St. John School s Art Room from 7 to 8pm, from September through the weeks after Easter. 5

Legion of Mary A Catholic Lay apostolate that performs both spiritual and corporal Works of Mercy. Meetings are Monday morning at 9:45 AM in Mercy Hall, Monday evening at 7 PM in the Parish Center and 4:45 on Friday afternoon for children in the Parish Center. The Arlington Diocese will be offering its MASTER CATECHIST TRAINING PROGAM beginning the fall of The Master Catechist Training Program consists of 2 years of formal study and is open to experienced catechists who are ready to deepen their involvement in the catechetical ministry of the Church. In the program, candidates grow in their faith through instruction, days of prayer, peer mentoring, and spiritual direction. After completion of a two-year program, candidates will be certified as Master Catechists, qualified to provide catechetical training in parishes. 7 Are You Interested in Learning more about the Bible? New this Year! Study the Bible at your own pace and at home. Parishioners, family and friends, and even new friends can sign up to watch the videos online and get together for discussions at any time and place they wish. The bible studies to be made available are listed below. Whenyou visit the parish website and click on the Adult Bible Study picture it will take you to a page with available studies. Then click on the title of a bible study and you will find the link to sign up for the Bible studies that St. John's is making available. Once you log in and purchase the study materials, you will be able to watch the videos at your convenience. Please look for future studies in upcoming bulletins and on the parish website. These Studies were designed to form a solid foundation for an ongoing parish Bible Study program. We hope to add other studies in the future. If you have any questions, please call the Religious Ed office at x209. The first Study, started in October, was The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation. The 24 lessons in The Bible Timeline guide the student of Scripture through the reading of the biblical narrative. In 2013, Matthew: The King and his Kingdom, another 24-part study, was the follow-up to the Scripture narrative in The Bible Timeline. The gospel of Matthew explores the life and mission of Jesus. Following Matthew was Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom **in This study shows how the Church continued the work of Christ after the coming of the Holy Spirit. ** Available here soon In the early summer of 2015 we offered Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother in one day. This study is an extraordinary pilgrimage that reveals Mary's unique role in God's Kingdom and in our lives. In the fall of 2015 Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come an 11 part study showed us how the kingdom established by Christ in his Church is intimately connected with the kingdom of heaven. In this study you will discover what the mysterious figures and images of Revelation mean. You will see how Revelation is more than an apocalyptic vision of the "end times." It is a revelation of God as our Divine Bridegroom and the Church as his spotless Bride, forever united in a heavenly, holy, and mystical marriage that we enter into every time we celebrate the Mass. In 2016 the Bible Study group covered James: Pearls for Wise Living described as a book of wisdom. James is a compilation of teachings intended to help the fledgling church in the face of persecution. There will be no July meeting. All over 55 are welcome.
