4 St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin Dear Folks, PENTECOST SUNDAY May all have a beautiful Pentecost Sunday. May the Holy Spirit grant us courage and insight in our response to the challenges of the world. I leave you a clip from the Wikipedia segment on the background of Pentecost. Hope you enjoy it. The biblical narrative of Pentecost is given in the second chapter of the Book of Acts. Present were about one hundred and twenty followers of Christ (Acts 1:15), including the Twelve Apostles (i.e. the Eleven faithful disciples and Matthias who was Judas' replacement) (Acts 1:13, 26), his mother Mary, various other women disciples and his brothers (Acts 1:14). Their reception of the Holy Spirit in the Upper Room is recounted in Acts 2:1 6: And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other languages, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. While those on whom the Spirit had descended were speaking in many languages, the Apostle Peter stood up with the eleven and proclaimed to the crowd that this event was the fulfillment of the prophecy ("I will pour out my spirit"). [8] In Acts 2:17, it reads: "'And in the last days,' God says, 'I will pour out my spirit upon every sort of flesh, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy and your young men will see visions and your old men will dream dreams." He also mentions (2:15) that it was the third hour of the day (about 9:00 am). Acts 2:41 then reports: "Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls." Peter stated that this event was the beginning of a continual outpouring that would be available to all believers from that point on, Jews and Gentiles alike. Everybody stop. Today (Sunday, June 4 th ) the parish offers the annual blessings of motorcycles. All bikers should meet out in front of the church at 2:00 PM. The blessing is open to all bikers in the parish and beyond. My they all enjoy many happy, healthy, and holy hours on the great roads that fill the Commonwealth. May the angels watch over them and help them to stay on the high side. Congratulations to our upcoming graduates from the parish school s 8th grade. The graduation will take place at the 7:30 PM Mass on Friday June 9 th. Everyone in the parish is welcome to attend, especially if you want to see the faculty, administration, and parents who help to make the kids a hopeful bunch for the future. God bless the kids who were youngsters under Mrs. Julie Copeland and her Pre- School program. When they leave the hallowed halls of our parish school they will feed into as many as eight different high schools. They shall be missed. Please look around the church next weekend to see if you can identify the two religious from the Dominican Order of Sisters in Ann Arbor Michigan. They have come to lead the annual Parish Faith Camp, (June th ) God bless the good sisters. They will also be giving a talk to the young ladies of the parish on Tuesday, June 13 th, at 6:30pm with a reception in the School s Library. Come meet the Sisters and hear about their order. I wish they would one day send my lovely niece, Sr. Mary Margaret Ann or our lovely parishioner, Sr. Mary Bernard, aka, Caitlin Palmer. My young niece is soon to leave for an assignment in California, three time zones away. God bless them in all the places He plants them. May the sisters and kids have a great week together. And in closing, as I am writing this letter on Monday May 29, 2017, Memorial Day, I promised all the folks at Mass today we will set up another prayer board for our parishioners currently serving in the military. God bless them one and all and may the angels watch over and protect them. That said, will all with folks please send me pictures to post on the military wall. Let us pray for one another. The summer draws near. Many of the adoration members will be going away for vacation setting up a shortfall of prayers receiving the Lord. Rather than shut the program down sporadically I ask all to consider joining the adoration society. Please trust me that many unexplained benefits in both safety and security come to this parish by way of the adorers. Please take the time to sign up for a particular time. Collegiate Answer: On October 8, 1871 the famous Chicago Fire took Place. When all was done 300 folks had died, three square miles, a little smaller than Warrenton, and 100,000 folks were left homeless before the coming winter. On the same day in Wisconsin, in the adjacent state of Wisconsin, a fire broke out that had over a million acres burned with the greats winds off the plains. It was known as the Pashtiga Fire. It was the name of the fire that killed over people died? And the Marian Apparition Chapel was spared when a rain storm the covered the church? The old wooden chapel was called, "Notre Dame de bon Secours, priez pour nous" Collegiate Question. What was the Jewish high holy day celebrated on the day Pentecost took place, and what time of day did the Pentecost take place? Father Gould 4
