The Chaplet of Divine Mercy is also prayed every morning after the 8:30 am Mass, Monday through Thursday during the school year and additionally after the 8:30 am Mass on Friday mornings during the summer months. If you cannot be present to pray with us at the parish at these times, simply join in prayer with us spiritually by briefly thinking of our Lord s Passion & Death every day at 3:00pm and especially on Friday s at 3:00pm by simply praying the words, Jesus I Trust in You. 4 St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Today is Palm Sunday and the Church joins together stepping into Holy Week. As Jesus enters into Jerusalem He is met by the great crowds. They have seen the miracles and heard His teachings on eating His Flesh and drinking His blood. But more especially they have heard of the raising of Lazarus at Bethany. This took place six days before Jesus entered Jerusalem. Bethany lies about a mile and a half from Jerusalem. It marks the beginning that will not be complete until the final judgment. If you want a special intention for the week, please pray for all those in danger of going to Hell for the public/personal/and political offenses against the Lord and others. Prayer works. Especially from the young and infirmed. If you want a good preparation for Holy Week please pull out your Bible and read the Gospel of John on the passion. You can find it in the final chapters of the four Gospels. An added feature can be found in the writing of the German mystic, Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich, ( And if you want to join the kids in the Hollywood runs, The Passion of the Christ, The Greatest Story Ever Told, Jesus of Nazareth, ( A little long so you can skip to the end. And, The Greatest Story Ever Told. ( For your convenience the schedule for Holy Week can be found in this bulletin. In anticipation I want to thank all who have done so much work in preparation for the coming week. The choir has been working overtime for the great days coming. Young John Williams and Mother Christi have been the ecclesial acrobats climbing the high walls covering the crucifix and other statues. The lines for the Box have been growing. And the Altar Servers will join for daily rehearsals. We begin together. I want to thank the many members of the Parish Adoration Society for the patience and due diligence these past weeks. It seems there have been a number of disruptions in the schedule with Forty Hours, The visitation of the Fatima Statue, the Friday night Stations of the Cross, and now Holy Week. I heartily encourage more people to take assigned hours before the Blessed Sacrament on Wednesdays and Thursday morning to Saturday mornings, nonstop. Many blessings come to the families of the parish via the practice of Adoration. We must remember our kids serving in the military. We must remember of First Responders who are so good to our families. We must remember the many doctors and nurses in their offices, hospital, and retirement communities. God bless the adorers and many touched by the Life of Love of the Lord and His Blessed Mother. Soon we will have a visiting priest from Africa join us for two months. His name is Fr. David Marungi. He and I were stationed together at St. Agnes and Sr. Raymond's while he was seeking is doctorate from the John Paul II Institute. He is coming back for visit from his duties with Catholic Charities in Africa. Please feel free to invite him home. He is a good man and is one of the hardest working priests I know. Did I mention he is also one of the holiest priests I know. Just a heads up that we recently had a conversation with the folks at the County Jail about initiating a program for the prisoners. Please stay tuned. If approved we may need some select Eucharistic Ministers for this most special apostolate. More to be said in the coming weeks. In closing I want to thank those who have been giving to the Bishop s Lenten Appeal this year. God bless you and may your kindness be remembered in this world, but more especially, in the next. Let us all step forward together. Let us pray for one another. In closing CCD will be closed on Palm Sunday and Easter Weekends. Also, the Parish Office will be closed on Good Friday, and Easter Monday. We are back at on Divine Mercy Sunday the two weeks following. The high school CCD Cook out is slated for Sunday May 7 th, after the 5:30 Mass. It will take place in the Deacon Bernie Regan Pavilion, behind the school. Come hungry. Collegiate Answer: In honor of Opening Day for Baseball let us remember the 1951 version of Angels in the Outfield where the voice of James Whitmore served as the voice of the Angel assisting the Pittsburgh Pirates. Collegiate Question: Following the Nuremburg Trials of Post World War II Germany, who was the Nazi mad man, known as the Animal to the Jews, known for killing as many as three million Jews, who called for a priest and appealed to the Mercy of God in Confession and Communion before being hanged. I extend my appreciation to Mrs. Sickler and all those who helped make Friday evening a success. The third quarter will end on Friday, April 7th. Where has the time gone? It is baffling to think that the school year is 75% complete! Our faculty and staff look forward to recognizing our 5-8th grade students who received Second Honors, First Honors, and High Honors for the third quarter. We will hold our quarterly Honor Roll Assembly on Thursday, April 13th at 9:45am in Trinity Hall. We continue to plan for next year and look forward to welcoming our incoming kindergarten students for their Kindergarten Screening on Wednesday, April 12th and Thursday, April 13th. This group appears to be split very evenly between boys and girls and we are thrilled to welcome another large group to our school community of faith, service, and academics. All are welcome to join us for our final Stations of the Cross on Tuesday, April 11th at 2:15pm or our school mass on Wednesday, April 12th at 8:30am. May we continue to grow in God's grace and wisdom. All 25 Service Hours need to be completed by mid May All volunteer service hours are to be done with the understanding that one is to serve the Church, each other, and the parish community with seriousness, respect, love, and charity. Cell phones are to be used only for emergencies and to call parents for rides when the service is completed. May God help us all to grow in love for one another. Reminder for the Candidates: Don't forget to update the RED binder in the vestibule of the church when you complete your Spiritual exercises. Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord MEN'S HOLY HOUR Wednesday 19 April Calling all men of the parish to gather together on the 3 rd Wednesday of each month from 7-9 pm for prayer and fraternity. This month, our day falls within the Octave and Fr. Gould wants us to celebrate Easter Wednesday just like it was Easter Sunday! Our Safeway butcher was kind enough to cut around oz. NY Strip steaks - but you'll need to RSVP so we're sure to have enough. Let us frfimian@google.com. An American Heritage Tenderheart Girl has put together a fundraiser to help fund the expenses for the St. John's Youth Workcamp 2017 and any extra funds will go to a crisis pregnancy center. Please consider bringing in your new or gently used sneakers, flip flops, sandals, boots of any kind, high heels, flats, work boots, baby shoes, mens dress shoe or water shoes! She needs to collect a minimum of 300 pairs of shoes to make this service project an actual fundraiser. This fundraiser will begin on April 8 and 9 and there will be bins to place your shoes into before and after masses or anytime in between. Thank you for helping out our youth! After all masses this weekend, Easter eggs will be given to each family exiting the church. Please place a donation for Workcamp inside the egg and return to church April 8, April 9 and Easter weekend. There will be teens collecting the donations after each mass. Used Book Sale to Benefit the School Library Starting February 6 th through May 18 th. Please box up any of your favorite books and deliver them to St. John s School after 3:30 pm Monday through Friday. Please place your boxes on the stage in Trinity Hall. We recently assisted a family with a utility bill. The beauty of our ministry is that we have the opportunity to talk to those who need help in their home, allowing us to uncover true needs and the problems getting in the way of fulfilling those needs. On this particular visit, it was discovered that husband and wife had great jobs until a circumstance beyond their control found the husband without employment. Although they had not been living above their means, they were now in serious trouble. This particular family was open to suggestions on how to cope with their unwelcome state of affairs and our volunteers wasted no time in offering concrete ideas and encouragement that led to the husband s creative self-employment. Vincentians also used their business connections to help arrange interviews with local employers. The new business sustained this family until God blessed them with a good full-time job. Knowing how easy it is to fall from good times into bad ones, the husband is keeping his personal business going to supplement their income. We are happy when we can help others through tough times. 9 St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin 9 April 2017 Celebrate the end of the Lenten Season with your fellow parishioners as our children enjoy St. John s FIFTH annual parish-wide Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 15, 2017 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm on the parish grounds. The shotgun start to collect the eggs will begin at approximately 2:20 pm and end at approximately 3:20PM. Light refreshments will follow in Mercy Hall with a special appearance by the Easter Bunny. To participate, simply bring a sufficient number of Easter baskets to collect the hidden eggs. Parents will FIRST congregate in Mercy Hall with their children for instructions, followed by a blessing by one of our Parish Priests PRIOR to the start of the hunt.
