Please join members of the parish in a Holy Hour from 3:00-4:00pm every Friday, for the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and the Mercy Stations of the Cross during Eucharistic Adoration. The Chaplet of Divine Mercy is also prayed every morning after the 8:30 am Mass, Monday through Thursday during the school year and additionally after the 8:30 am Mass on Friday mornings during the summer months. If you cannot be present to pray with us at the parish at these times, simply join in prayer with us spiritually by briefly thinking of our Lord s Passion & Death every day at 3:00pm and especially on Friday s at 3:00pm by simply praying the words, Jesus I Trust in You. 4 St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin Dear Folks, Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time The adventure of my annual vacation home began this past Sunday. My first stop was to visit Sr. Marian Loughlin, of the Sisters of Notre Dame in Chardon, Ohio. Next year will be her 70 th anniversary. While at the breakfast table yesterday one of the sisters asked my name and I said Edmond Dantes. Two of the sisters burst into laughter while the others stared in confusion. I acknowledged that they must have been high school teachers in their active days. They were and they proceeded to explain to the others that Dantes was a French prisoner who later came to be known as the Count of Monte Cristo. A few of the sisters stopped by after Mass and mentioned they had once been assigned to St. John the Evangelist Parish in Warrenton. Their names were: Sr. Mary Louise; her sister Sr. Patricia was assigned to Sacred Heart in Winchester; Sr. Mary Dolores; and Sr. Roseanne. I asked if they remembered various families in the parish and they mentioned Dr. Maybach and how good he was to the sisters. I am currently visiting relatives in Chicago and will soon leave to see my good mother in West Des Moines, Iowa. About thirty cousins showed up in my aunt s basement last night when I offered Mass in anticipation of the Holy Day for the Assumption of Mary into heaven. My relatives are one of the great blessings in my priesthood. So devout in the Faith and models in their example of marriage and family life. How I love them so. Today, Tuesday, I will head home to West Des Moines to see my good mother. Before I get home I have more cousins to see for lunch in Chicago and will stop in Davenport to visit my sixth grade teacher in the nursing home for the Humility Sisters. It is has been over fifty two years since I have seen her days when I used to look up to her. It was a long, long time ago. The adventure continues. Please read the enclosed statement from Bishop Burbidge, on the recent violence in Charlottesville. It seems that we are praying more and more for domestic violence. We prayed for the five police officers killed in Dallas and others in New York and Chicago. We prayed for an end to the violence in Ferguson, Missouri as well as Baltimore, Maryland. Please set your calendars for the upcoming pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, in Washington. It is slated for Saturday October 14 th. Let us pray for one another. Collegiate Answer: Archbishop Oscar Romero was assassinated at the altar of the chapel for the Divine Providence Hospital, for terminally ill. He was killed prior to the consecration of the Blessed Sacrament, the highest act in the life of a priest. The scenario is unlike the mafia hits which would deny their targets in receiving Communion. Faculty and staff will return on Monday, August 21 st and the first day of school for students will be Monday, August 28th. We will attend Mass holding true to tradition, and we look forward to welcoming our student body with open arms. In addition, I am pleased to announce that Bishop Burbidge will hold a conference call for Principals on the first day to share his excitement for another exciting year in Catholic education. He also asked for a copy of our school yearbook in the spring and we were happy to oblige. His involvement, plans to visit our schools on a three year rotation, and commitment to Catholic education is admirable, we are truly blessed. There is still space available in various classes so if you would like an individual tour, please contact the school office at or by at tmacdonald@sjesva.org. In the interim, we look forward to seeing our school families at Meet the Teacher on Friday, August 25 th from 1:00-3:00pm. It is still early but welcome back!! Principal Macdonald St. John the Evangelist Preschool/Pre-Kindergarten: The Preschool office continues to remain open during the summer on a part-time basis and messages left are checked daily. St. John Preschool has a few spaces available in the 3 Day, 4Day and 5Day Pre-K (4/5 year old) Program. For questions, inquiries, or to schedule a tour, please contact the Preschool office at or at the Elementary School at St. John's School Extended Day Program is looking for a staff member for their morning care program. The morning care shifts run Monday- Friday 6:15am until 8:00am. Starting wage is $9/hr. Applicants must be at least 18yrs of age & complete VIRTUS training. Staff will be trained in CPR and First Aid. This is a great way to get to know the wonderful students at our school and amazing staff of St. John's. FYI Classes begin August 20 th & 21 st On the first day of each session we will have a brief Parent Meeting in the school Trinity Hall. Please try to attend. No registrations will be accepted on the first day of classes! Religious Ed registration forms are available at the parish office.
