The Chaplet of Divine Mercy is also prayed every morning after the 8:30 am Mass, Monday through Thursday during the school year and additionally after the 8:30 am Mass on Friday mornings during the summer months. 4 Dear Folks, The excitement of the Summer is upon us. Vacationers fill the roads and with them the greater possibilities of accidents with lost commuters. The weather vacillates with the possibilities of heat and storms. In this year of the elections, we can be consumed with the topics of controversy that will be largely forgotten in nine months. But the most consuming feature of our culture involves the violence that fills the streets of our homes. God bless the many in law enforcement who step in harm s way each day for the benefit of our security. Each day I pray for six of my cousins who serve as policemen in the City of Chicago and suburbs. What does that really mean? More people in Chicago die of violence each week than our military serving in the war zones. The presence of violence is nothing new to the Windy City. Two of my relatives were killed in the line of duty while serving as policemen. The topic is a very dear one to my family. Addressing the issue of errant officers of the law is like addressing the issue of errant clerics of the Church. They often become barometers for the people they serve. There is no easy solution for problems that will take generations of time to be forgiven or forgotten. In this year of Mercy, designated by the Holy Father, we must be mindful of the social, economic, and spiritual maladies that fill our modern society and by virtue of our Faith we are called to bind such wounds that curse our memories. Often we forget that we are the beneficiaries of an incredible social strength found in our culture and we don t even notice it. This is the strength that revolves around Faith, Families, and Friends. We often miss that because of the massive culture of death where life is often neglected or oppressed by a word called, choice. It is the contraceptive mentality where we choose, with no small amount of pride shaded with entitlement, to design things in our own image and then be frustrated when we kill it. Such an application can easily be adopted to racist and bigoted tenets offered so eloquently in the mass media by prophets of doom. In the spirit of inclusion from recent decades of political thought we destroy the beauty of individual citizens. In the coming Summer let us pray for a rebirth in the hearts of all Americans. Let there be prayers that fill the homes, broken or abandoned by missing parents. Let the identity of Fatherhood come back to our inner cities. Let the identity of Motherhood reclaim our homes. Let there be sobriety and release from addictions that imprison the hearts and souls of the young. Sounds like an impossible dream? Yet, when it all starts with Faith, mentioned above, it all finishes with Friends. Let us pray for one another. In light of the current threats set upon our law enforcement members that serve all of us in our local region, the parish will sponsor a monthly Mass for their virtue, safety, and security and in supporting their duties may we all as brothers and sisters in Christ enjoy the same qualities of virtue, safety, and security. 5 Greetings, Another week has passed and we continue to make improvements to our school. The boys and girls bathrooms are currently being renovated and this project should be complete by the end of the week. The summer crew is busy making the school aesthetically pleasing both internally and externally. I think you will appreciate the changes when we host our Meet the Teacher on Friday, August 26th from 1-3:00pm! There will also be academic changes for the school year in terms of Diocesan testing procedures. The Diocese of Arlington has moved all standardized testing online (Scantron Performance Series) and moving forward, our third through seventh grade students will be assessed three times a year in Math, Reading, and Language Arts. The baseline will take place in September, the progression in January, and the final cumulative round of testing will occur in May. This is a completely different testing tool and curriculum so it will be interesting to see how we measure up against other public and private schools. Dr. Leslie Lipovski (Curriculum Specialist for the Office of Catholic Schools) will provide some professional development to our faculty and staff on Monday, August 22 nd. Let the challenge begin!! St. John Preschool has a few spaces available in the 4Day and 5Day Pre-K (4 /5 year old) Program. Through a process of discernment, prayer, education, and sharing with others on the journey, these adults prepare to become Catholics and the entire SJE parish community rejoices with them. Preparation sessions are held on Wed. evenings in the St. John School s Art Room from 7 to 8pm, from September through the weeks after Easter. The Arlington Diocese will be offering its MASTER CATECHIST TRAINING PROGAM beginning the fall of The Master Catechist Training Program consists of 2 years of formal study and is open to experienced catechists who are ready to deepen their involvement in the catechetical ministry of the Church. In the program, candidates grow in their faith through instruction, days of prayer, peer mentoring, and spiritual direction. After completion of a two-year program, candidates will be certified as Master Catechists, qualified to provide catechetical training in parishes. Parishioners, family and friends, and even new friends can sign up to watch the videos online and get together for discussions at any time and place they wish. The bible studies to be made available are listed below. Whenyou visit the parish website and click on the Adult Bible Study picture it will take you to a page with available studies. Then click on the title of a bible study and you will find the link to sign up for the Bible studies that St. John's is making available. Once you log in and purchase the study materials, you will be able to watch the videos at your convenience. Please look for future studies in upcoming bulletins and on the parish website. These Studies were designed to form a solid foundation for an ongoing parish Bible Study program. We hope to add other studies in the future. If you have any questions, please call the Religious Ed office at x209. The first Study, started in October, was The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation. The 24 lessons in The Bible Timeline guide the student of Scripture through the reading of the biblical narrative. In 2013, Matthew: The King and his Kingdom, another 24-part study, was the follow-up to the Scripture narrative in The Bible Timeline. The gospel of Matthew explores the life and mission of Jesus. Following Matthew was Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom **in This study shows how the Church continued the work of Christ after the coming of the Holy Spirit. ** Available here soon In the early summer of 2015 we offered Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother in one day. This study is an extraordinary pilgrimage that reveals Mary's unique role in God's Kingdom and in our lives. In the fall of 2015 Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come an 11 part study showed us how the kingdom established by Christ in his Church is intimately connected with the kingdom of heaven. In this study you will discover what the mysterious figures and images of Revelation mean. You will see how Revelation is more than an apocalyptic vision of the "end times." It is a revelation of God as our Divine Bridegroom and the Church as his spotless Bride, forever united in a heavenly, holy, and mystical marriage that we enter into every time we celebrate the Mass. In 2016 the Bible Study group covered James: Pearls for Wise Living described as a book of wisdom. James is a compilation of teachings intended to help the fledgling church in the face of persecution. Next meeting will be August 5 th, Police Woman Allie Eggers, will be speaking about Senior Protection against scams and frauds. All over 55 are welcome. Society of St. Vincent De Paul This has been a particularly difficult year for this Conference. Brenda Warren, our devoted President, passed away in May, leaving a real void in our ministry. Brenda set an example for all of us with her compassionate attitude and her unfailing drive to serve as Jesus served. We ask that when you remember the less fortunate in your prayers, you remember Brenda and all who serve the poor. From January 1 through June 30 of this year, your generosity allowed us to serve many families who visited our pantry, as well as 69 individuals/families who needed assistance with rent, utilities or special situations. We made payments in the amount of $20,661.00, working with your generous donations that amounted to $17,366 during the first half of the year. God bless you! You walk with us as we work to be the hands and feet of Christ. We thank you, as do those we serve, for your continued support.
