Please come up the center aisle to the altar rail and return by the side aisle. Please let an usher know if you need communion brought to your seat. Hold out your hand to receive the bread and then eat. Guide the chalice to your mouth and drink. (Please do not dip the bread in the wine.) If you need a gluten-free host, simply raise an index finger for the priest to see and one will be provided. To receive a blessing instead of communion, simply cross your arms over your chest. 5 Announcements From Fr. John: Our Adult Formation series for August will conclude next Sunday, August 27 th. We ll meet at 9:00 a.m. in the St. John Room for a final class on Mary, the mother of Jesus. In the first class, we talked about Mary in her historical context. This morning, we talked a bit about Mary in scripture and in Christian theology. Next week, we will conclude with some thoughts about Mary s role in the present and future of the church. If you missed the earlier classes, please come anyway and pick up the hand-outs for those classes that should help get you caught up! We are exploring aspects of Mary because she plays such an influential role in the history and life of the church. Christians have given her a variety of titles: God-bearer, Blessed Mother, Madonna, Theotokos, Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Heaven, Queen of Angels, Star of the Sea, Sancta Maria, Mother of Mercy, Mater Dolorosa, Reina de las Américas, Panagia, and a lengthy list of Our Lady ofs Some Anglicans tend to avoid honoring Mary in any way and, of course, it is not required of any Episcopalian. But many other practitioners do respect and love her because of the special religious significance that she has as the mother of Jesus Christ. We do not worship her, but venerate her, with the help of the liturgical renewals of the 20 th century that returned her to a reinvigorated prominence. The 1979 Book of Common Prayer names her again in our liturgical prayers, and we celebrate her on August 15 th as the feast-day of Saint Mary the Virgin with specific scripture readings, a collect and preface. The church has renewed other ancient feasts associated with Mary, and offer liturgical resources for those festivals. Many parishes, including this one, also pray Marian devotions such as the Angelus and Regina Coeli, and individual practitioners are discovering or re-engaging Anglican rosary prayers as a part of their spiritual practices. Consequently, we keep a few Anglican rosaries and guide-book at the side altar under the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help by the children s area. 5

8 He who preaches peace and unity didn t want us to always pray privately by ourselves or only for ourselves. We don t say My Father who art in heaven or Give me this day my daily bread. It is not for ourselves alone that each of us asks to be forgiven, not to be led into temptation, or to be delivered from evil.
