2 Sabbatical: A message from Dayna On January 1, I am beginning a three-month sabbatical that will include yoga instructor training and travel in Hawaii, a week with girlfriends in Florida, and two weeks in Iowa with my mom. I m going to read Harry Potter and finally watch all the Star Wars movies in order of release. First Christian Church of Orange is a recipient of an amazing grant from the Lilly Foundation that is paying for my adventures AND FCCO s adventures while I am away. Starting with January 6, Epiphany Sunday, and ending March 3, a different individual or group of individuals will be planning worship. They have a budget and permission to be creative. I am calling these people worship designers. Dean Shepherd and Codyanne Cornwell will make sure all the pieces come together for a cohesive worship service. It s going to be awesome. The worship designers are listed below. March 10 begins the season of Lent, and FCCO is going to blessed with the preaching and ministry of Rev. Jose Morales. Jose is a PhD student at Claremont School of Theology where he also teaches and works for the Disciples Seminary Foundation. Jose preached at the last General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and he knocked it out of the park! The title of the Lenten series is, Breaking Dirt. I will return April 1 and be in worship April 7 to hear Jose preach the last sermon of the series. After worship on the 7 th we are going to have a catered lunch (thank you Lilly) and take a few moments to debrief on the worship design series and Lent. It is possible that the creativity of our worship designers will inspire us to change something in our worship service. I am grateful for Pastor Michelle and the pastoral care she will provide in my absence with the assistance of the elders. I am grateful for our amazing staff and the many amazing volunteers that keep things going at FCCO. I am grateful for the privilege of a sabbatical. This will be the first sabbatical of my 29 years as a congregational pastor. The plan is to come back renewed and excited for what we can do together as people who strive to follow Jesus. In case you are not familiar with sabbaticals, I will be unavailable for the duration. It is a challenging boundary that I intend to honor. Please know, you, the beloved of FCCO, will never be far from my heart. (Sometime I will tell you about the time I went to camp and my husband let our bird die.) Don t forget the dry cleaning. Don t forget the garbage man comes on Fridays. I also write post-its to myself as I remember things to put on my to do list or have ideas I don t want to forget. As I head out the door for my sabbatical, I feel the need for post-its. If you are new to Progressive Christianity or want to experience a study that challenges you, this study is for you! Kirk is an experienced teacher and knows the material well.

Stewardship results -Offerings Expenses Income The Budget for 2018 approved by the Congregation in December, again represents challenges consisting of an Income Deficit and increase in Operating Expenses.The Offering results below thru November indicate we have exceeded our Budgeted Offerings, and an improvement in income Jan-Nov Actual offerings $368,413 Budgeted offerings $356,478. Actual Expense $509,552 Budgeted Expense $496,246. Net Income $12,562. Budgeted Net Income -$14,705. Scrip is a great way to shop while helping our Church with its outreach. Adult Study For Adult Study Class this Sunday, Dec. 30th, we will be studying The World into which Jesus was born. National Benevolent Association: XPLOR NBA XPLOR a prophetic movement of and for young adults who are considering lives of care and service. The Residency provides 10-month professional development and vocational discernment opportunities for 21- to 30-year-olds to live simply in community and engage in direct service and justice work. Through NBA XPLOR, we partner young adults with Disciples congregations, regional and general ministries, and wider communities positively engaging neighborhoods, the congregations, and the young adults.
