2 P A G E 2 Church News Preschool Bowl-A-Thon Donations! WE DID IT!!! We collected $3,057 The congregation alone donated $ Thank you for your support!! Pastor started his beard 11/9/18! He has to keep it until Christmas! WELCA Christmas Potluck WELCA will be meeting December 13th at Noon for their Christmas Potluck. Bring a dish to pass and join us for food, fellowship, singing some carols and celebrating the birth of Christ. We will be delivering fruit baskets to the shutins after the meeting. 5 P A G E 5 Special Church Council Meeting November 5, 2018 Call to Order: Meeting called to order at 6:00 PM by President Tyler Halverson. Approval of Agenda: A motion was made by Suzi McInnis, seconded by Rod Johnson, to approve the agenda. Motion carried. Act on Financial Secretary and Office Manager Positions: A motion was made by Kathy Tozer, seconded by Suzi McInnis, to hire Victoria Prince-Silvas for positions of Office Manager and Financial Secretary. Motion carried. Act on Compensation for New Hires: A motion was made by Suzi McInnis, seconded by Ellyn Hudacek, to set a wage of $12.75/hour for both positions for a probationary period of three (3) months. Wage will be revisited upon favorable review after this time. Motion carried. Additional Items and Announcements: Regular meeting is November 13, 2018 at 6:30 PM. Tyler will be unable to attend. Please send items for agenda to Tyler by Wednesday, November 7, Adjournment: A motion to adjourn was made at 6:21 PM by Janice Naset, seconded by Suzi McInnis. Motion carried. 6 P A G E 6 Church Council Meeting November 13, 2018 Call to Order: Meeting called to order at 6:30 PM by Vice President Phil Skaar. Opening Devotion: by Rod Johnson Called by God to Serve Chapter 18. Amend and Approval of the Agenda: A motion was made by Janice Naset, seconded by Suzi McInnis, to amend the agenda to add under Old Business: Item C. Boiler Fund and under New Business Item B. Compensation for Training. Motion carried to approve the amended agenda. Approval of October meeting minutes and Special Meeting Minutes from November 5, 2018: A motion was made by Ellyn Hudacek, seconded by Rod Johnson to approve the minutes. Motion carried. Congregation Comments: Why isn t St John s included on the Community Calendar on Bloomer TV public access channel 19? {Pastor will check into having St John s added.} Could Faith Formation youth on Sunday be dismissed during service to begin learning? {Teachers would miss worship. Also, there are very few youths attending on Sunday.} Request to slow down speed of announcements on Power Point. {Pastor will check with office staff to see if image time on screen can be increased.} Does St John s follow up on visitor cards? {Yes. Contact information is passed on to the Pastor, who follows up.} Financial Report: Needed to borrow $7000 from Line of Credit at the bank to pay bills. A motion was made by Janice Naset, seconded by Suzi McInnis, to approve the financial report. Motion carried. Committee Reports: Fellowship Ministry: About 50 people attended October Bingo. Bingo will be held on the 3 rd Sunday of each month. Next one is November 18 th. Property Committee: Fall Clean-Up was held on Saturday, November 3 rd. Worship/Music Ministry: Holden Evening Prayer will be used during Advent. Children s Christmas Pageant is Wednesday, December 19 th. January 6 is Epiphany. Would like youth to participate in worship with special music. Rite of Confirmation is January 13 th. Discussed decreasing attendance trend.
7 P A G E 7 Church Council Minutes Youth/Family Ministry: Halloween Event offered use of St John s facilities to the community to warm up, enjoy hot chocolate and receive a voucher for a bible, to be redeemed at worship people from the community attended. Considering doing a Trunk or Treat event next year, on the Saturday prior to Halloween. Congregation would be invited to decorate their vehicle s trunk and distribute treats from St John s parking lot. Stay tuned! Fifteen bibles were given to preschool age youth and four Spark bibles were given youth newly attending St John s. Butter Braid Pastry Sale runs from November 14-27, with delivering on December 11. Nine middle school youth and four senior high youth, along with four chaperones will attend Youth Quake in Wisconsin Dells January A male chaperone is still needed. St John s will cover the cost of the room for chaperones. Children s Christmas Pageant is Wednesday, December 19 th with practice on Wednesday, December 12. We are looking for a portable clothing/coat rack for hanging Pageant costumes, to be used from December 5-19 th. If you have one to loan, contact Marla or the office. Happy Birthday Jesus is Sunday, December 16 th. Families are invited to celebrate Jesus birthday and decorate cookies together in the dining hall. Youth in Action would like to decorate the dining hall for the holidays. Looking for strings of lights to use. Youth in Action is looking for suggestions on a community service project and/or a project they could do for St. John s, similar to the nursery project they completed. Next meeting will be Monday, January 7 th at 5:00. Preschool: Enrollment will be nearly full in January. Preschool is looking into getting a Tax ID Number. Nominating Committee: Committee has come up with two candidates for Church Council positions. At least five candidates are needed. Council President s Report: Reminder that if there is a large item under your committee report, please advise ahead of time so it can be placed on the agenda and so that the council knows that it will be discussed. Please submit items to be included on the next agenda by noon Tuesday of the week prior to council meeting. Next meeting will be December 11, 2018 at 6:30.
8 P A G E 8 Church Council Minutes Pastor s Report: Celebrating: Preschool reaching its goal of $3000 for the Bowl-a-thon; Foundation updating its bylaws; Halloween outreach to the community. Resourced: Kathy Larson, Tyler Halverson and Carrie Anderson stepping in for Art Klingenberg at confirmation; Youth in Action wanting to decorate the dining hall for Christmas. Working on: Training our newest staff member, Victoria Prince-Silvas; Completing the pictorial directory; Catching up on shut-in visits and recent hospitalizations. Help and Prayers: Annual reports and stirring up energy for discipleship; Decreasing attendance trends. {Pastor will meet with Discipleship committee RE: survey ideas.} Membership Updates: Transfer to Church Triumphant: Ray Ross. Baptism: Melanie and Michael Erickson. New members: Jason, Heidi, Borck, Jerzei and Emslee Graski and Korclen Kobylarczyk.. A motion was made by Janice Naset, seconded by Rod Johnson, to approve membership update. Motion carried. Old Business: Wedding Policy Update: Tabled. Annual Meeting Planning A motion was made by Suzi McInnis, seconded by Ellyn Hudacek, to set the Annual Meeting date of January 20, 2019 with a snow date of January 27, Motion carried. Council will create a list of common misconceptions surrounding Annual Meeting. Ideas can be contributed until November 25 th. Pastor will share these weekly during Announcements leading up to Annual Meeting. Pastor will create a stream lined order of worship for Annual Meeting Sunday. We are proposing to run the meeting from about 9:15-9:45. Boiler Update: Discussed how to best serve St John s with the generous donations exceeding the Boiler Campaign. A motion was made by Rod Johnson, seconded by Suzi McInnis, to use $8650 from the Boiler Fund for Benevolence: $1000 to Lutheran Social Services; $1000 to Luther Park; $6650 to the Synod. These amounts are half of what we pledged to Benevolence for $6800 will be left in Boiler Fund to be used as needed. Motion carried. Pastor will put in the bulletin, Power Point and announcements, that thanks to the generous donations, we are able to contribute half of what has been pledged to Benevolence. New Business Budget: Discussed budget items. Compensation for Training: A motion was made by Ellyn Hudacek, seconded by Suzi McInnis, to pay Pat Prill $12/hour from Council Funds while she helps train new office staff. Motion carried. A motion to adjourn was made at 10:33 PM by Janice Naset, with a second by Ellyn Hudacek. Motion carried. The meeting closed with the Lord s Prayer led by Pastor Martin.
