Perhaps this prayer may help you begin your preparation today: God of our forebears, of Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Miriam and Isaiah, as we gather today, help us to hear Your voice in the very depths of our being. Draw us into Your presence and service. Warn us that we must not ignore the cries of pain and suffering, oppression and injustice in the world. Motivate us to act. But will You also give us words of hope? Hope and comfort based on the assurance that You are sovereign and Your good will in the end be accomplished. We ask all this in the name of Jesus. Amen. 7 ANNUAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING This is a friendly reminder that the Annual Congregational Meeting will be held on Sunday, March 30 th following the service. A lunch prior to the meeting will be provided for all congregants. There will be a gluten free beef stew available for those who require a gluten free diet. A line of credit is a loan whereby a bank agrees to give a borrower access to a set amount of money that can be tapped as and if needed. 10 connection. It was written by E. Margaret Clarkson, a remarkable Christian woman, who was born in Melville in Sadly, she ret was plagued by pain, notably migraines and then arthritis. Her first words as a toddler Margaret was four. In Toronto, the family began attending St. comfort and strength in hymns. At age ten Margaret had her first published work a poem on the New Year. It was also about this time that she professed faith in Christ, began to teach herself to play piano, and started contributing frequently to parish thirteen, she ended up attending a different, non-denominational, church used many more gospel songs in its both narrow and legalistic. Ongoing illnesses, family situation and the Great Depression all made it virtually impossible for Margaret to undertake university studies. Instead she enrolled in the Toronto Normal School (Teachers College) but upon finishing, she could not find any employment in the Toronto area. Eventually she took a job teaching elementary students at a lumber camp. It was here that the lumber camp school, Margaret moved to the mining community of Kirkland Lake. It was a terribly lonely time. Eventually she bought and began to restore a rundown summer cottage on the Severn River. Accessible only by boat, Margaret would do most of her writing here. Eventually she secured a teaching position in Toronto, and found a church which supported both good singing and strong preaching Knox Presbyterian. 9

11 After many years living in boarding houses, she purchased a home in the city. She continued to write hymns and books. She began to use hamsters in her classroom to teach elements of sex and health education an innovation in Her book, relating this experience, became a best seller and allowed her to take a leave of absence for a year to study language and literature books written: Shining After Rain, Chats with Young Adults on Growing Up, The Wondrous Cross, Rivers Among the Rocks and This was an astonishing production given her frequent migraine pain. Long standing spinal problems finally required surgery, but a few years later her arthritis remerged and became increasingly painful and debilitating. It was then that she began to write Grace Grows Best in Winter, which was published in A year later, in severe pain, Margaret retired from teaching. Margaret had learned early in life that during gentle ministry of the rement, Margaret was able to take occasional courses in theology. She was also able to devote energies to continued writing, eventually publishing seventeen books. In 1979 and again in 1981 Margaret taught Hymnody at Regent College, Vancouver. Eventually moving to a care home, Margaret Clarkson died in Toronto in Throughout her life she had experienced enormous suffering a broken home, financial strains, loneliness and isolation, disappointment in never marrying and constant physical pain. Nevertheless she continued 10
