An Opportunity to Serve: The elevator in FBC is vital to a number of members to enable them to worship each Sunday morning. There is a great need for people to volunteer to run the elevator Sunday mornings allowing people access to both Learning for Life and regular worship. Prayerfully consider volunteering to run the elevator 1 or more Sundays a month. If you are interested in volunteering or require more information, please contact William Crook ASAP. 8 SPRING CONGREGATIONAL MEETING Our Christian prayers and heartfelt sympathy are with the family and friends of Valorie (Val) Treslan who passed away in Regina on February 1 st at the age of 73. A funeral service was held at Speers Funeral Home on February 6 th at 3:30 p.m. This meeting will be held on Sunday, March 22 nd, immediately following the morning worship service. REPORTS FOR THE ANNUAL REPORT BOOK The reports must be in the church office no later than Thursday, February 26 th in order to be included in the annual report book. Our church secretary has to have this much lead-time in order to collate and format reports and to photocopy the report books, as well as make photocopies of the annual audited statement and get all this material into the hands of the congregation two Sundays before the spring congregational meeting. 10 Canadian Baptists of Western Canada First Nations Healing and Welcome From CBWC Aboriginal people welcomed European settlers, traders and explorers to their traditional lands more than 400 years ago. They guided Europeans across lands that were new to explorers but already well known to First Nations. As settlers sought more land and traders demanded more furs, buffalo hides and otter pelts, First Nations people were pushed into smaller and smaller territories. Legal protections for aboriginal people, like the Royal Proclamation of 1763 and treaty rights, were mostly ignored. For more than a century, the Canadian government enforced a policy of assimilation designed to erase the cultural, social, economic and political distinctions of First Nations people. For example, aboriginal children were taken from their parents and forced to go to residential schools far from home. While there, many were sexually abused; in some schools, half the children died of starvation or preventable diseases. Some have called this cultural genocide. Today, 1.4 million First Nations, Metis and Inuit people (4.3% Canada population) are proudly reclaiming their culture and demonstrating their political and economic strength and empowerment. Yet immense gaps between aboriginal and non-aboriginal people remain. Aboriginal men and women expect to live about 9 years less than the general population; a third of aboriginal people require social assistance, compared to 5% of the general population; one third of the prison population is aboriginal, although they are part of the only 1/20 th of comprising about half of all foster children; 28% of aboriginal youth do not finish high school; more than 1,100 aboriginal women are missing or have been murdered. *The wounds are deep and complex. Much needed healing remains to be done. There are some fine examples of CBWC churches that are bridging the gaps between non-aboriginal and aboriginal Canadians: Bethlehem Aboriginal Fellowship in Winnipeg, New Life Community Baptist in Duncan, BC and First Baptist in Prince Albert, SK, many others. However, many of us know few or no aboriginal Canadians and find it hard to find ways to connect. 9

11 How can the Christian church step into these gaps and walk alongside our aboriginal brothers and sisters? How can churches share the love of Christ in respectful ways that support First Nations to overcome the wounds of centuries of dislocation, discrimination and disadvantage? How can the Church become a place of healing, friendship and welcome? What Can You Do PRAY for friendship, reconciliation and healing between aboriginal and nonaboriginal peoples in Canada. WELCOME First Nations people into your home, schools, playgroups, sports teams, workplaces and churches and find ways to reach out and include them in your activities. BEFRIEND First Nations people and develop long-lasting relationships with them. LISTEN empathetically to the stories of First Nations People. RECOGNIZE and reject racial stereo types. Instead, embrace all people as unique and wonderful individuals, created and loved by God. understand the vital role they have played in shaping Canada politics and culture, and how they continue to contribute significantly to contemporary Canada. INVITE First Nations elders to speak at workshops, seminars or worship services in your church. FAMILIARIZE yourself with, enjoy and value the creativity of the many First Nations writers, artists and musicians working in Canada. For example, Governor Tanya Tagaq, 2014 winner of the Polaris Prize. INFORM yourself about the facts and the devastating impact of the challenges faced by aboriginal people because of residential schools, missing and murdered aboriginal women, political and economic marginalization, substandard housing, disproportional incarceration and social problems caused by centuries of assimilation and cultural genocide. ACKNOWLEDGE and respect First nati WALK alongside First Nations people as they seek justice that will right past wrongs and their fair share of prosperity resulting from the use of their traditional lands. 10
