A special thanks also to Cheryl Johnston for buying all the prizes and managing the children's games. We since rely hope that everyone who attended had a wonderful time. 10 Many thanks to my church family for all your kindnesses and prayers during some very difficult days. God Bless each and every one of you. ~Marilyn Hunter~ PENTECOST was originally the Jewish harvest festival which Sinai fifty days after the Exodus/escape from slavery in Egypt. For Christians the day came to be associated with the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the followers of Jesus which happened on this day. PENTECOST CUSTOMS vary widely across the church. Eastern Orthodox Christians celebrate with an all-night vigil on the eve of the feast day, which is regarded as second only to Easter in importance. The liturgical celebrations of Pentecost in Western churches, both Protestant and Roman Catholic, are as rich varied as those in the East. The main sign of Pentecost in the West is the colour red. THE COLOUR RED is used in many churches today, as a reminder of t disciples on the Day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit, promised by Jesus, came. In modern times it is not only ministers and choirs who wear red vestments, but often laypeople choose to wear red clothing as well. Red banners are hung and the pulpit and Communion Table are often draped in red cloth and the sanctuary may be decorated with red flowers. Another custom is reading the appointed Scripture lessons in multiple languages recounting the speaking in tongues recorded in Acts 2:4-12. In the middle ages, cathedrals and some other great churches in Western Europe were fitted with a peculiar architectural feature known as a Holy Ghost hole; a small circular opening in the roof that symbolized the entrance of Holy Spirit into the midst of the assembled worshippers. At Pentecost, these Holy Ghost holes would be decorated with flowers, and sometimes a dove figure was lowered through into the church while the story of Pentecost was read from 9

the Bible. In Italy, it is customary to scatter rose petals from the ceilings or balconies of churches to recall the miracle of the fiery tongues, while in France it was customary to blow trumpets during worship services to recall the sound of the mighty wind which accompanied the Descent of the Holy Spirit. In the United Kingdom, reference to the white (whit) robes worn by those who were to be baptized on this day. In many European countries, including Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, The Netherlands, Norway and Portugal, the Monday following Pentecost is a public holiday. A fairly recent practice has been to eat foods on Pentecost which are red in colour and/or hot and spicy! IN CHRISTIAN ART the Holy Spirit has often been symbolized by a dove, because, at the baptism of Jesus, the Holy Spirit descended like a dove and alighted upon him. Among Celtic Christians however, a common artistic symbol to represent the Holy Spirit was not the dove but the wild goose. This was intended as a pointed reminder that, just as no one knew when or where the wild goose might show up, so also no one can be sure where, when or how the power of the Holy Spirit may break forth. You may note that goose, rather than a dove, as a nod to his Celtic/Scottish ancestry. NEWS FROM NEW FRIENDS IN CHRIST (NFIC) CONGREGATION There have been a number of important changes within the NFIC in recent months as this group assumes more responsibility and moves toward greater independence. Here are a few highlights: (1) Leadership One of the concerns has been the need for Karen speaking pastoral leadership. Rev. Leng Nawn Thang and Rev. Zabiak Cung Biaka have provided sterling service to the NFIC congregation, but have long been aware that their inability to speak Karen has been a handicap. (Thang and Zabiak are both from the Chin ethnic group and speak the Chin language, not Karen. Thang also speaks Burmese, which a number of older Karen understand.). The NFIC congregation has decided to increase the responsibilities and roles of two Karen speaking leaders - Eh Tha Wah and Say K' Paw. Thang and 10

Zabiak will continue within this four person pastoral team, but with somewhat reduced preaching responsibilities. All of these positions are part time and the small stipends are paid by NFIC. (2) Ordination In May the annual meeting of the Karen Baptist Fellowship of Canada (KBFC) was held in Winnipeg. This is a nationwide association of Karen Baptists. Dr. McKim attended this meeting, along with Wayne and Marlene Wyatt, to represent FBC. At this meeting Eh Tha Wah was ordained by the KBFC. During the coming months Dr. McKim will be working with Eh Tha Wah in the lengthy process to have his credentials recognized by our denomination, Canadian Baptist Churches of Western Canada (formerly called Baptist Union of Western Canada). (3) Constitution and New Name The NFIC is in the process of drafting a constitution and bylaws. The hope is that these may be completed by 2012, with an accompanying name change to FIRST KAREN BAPTIST CHURCH. (4) First Karen Baptist Church Diaconate As part of this change, it is anticipated that the NFIC Committee will terminate and be replaced by a group of deacons elected from among the First Karen Baptist Church membership. The NFIC committee - which is technically a committee of our Missions Commission - has done excellent work in the early days and years, and its membership has increasingly come from the Karen congregation itself. With this change, it is anticipated that the Missions Commission itself will be able to focus on other projects. (5) Relationship of First Baptist Church and First Karen Baptist Church The precise nature of the relationship between the two congregations will continue to evolve, change and be redefined as time goes on. This could eventually mean changes and adjustments in both the FBC constitution/bylaws and those of First Karen Baptist Church. To this point we at FBC have tended to think of NFIC perhaps in terms of a daughter congregation. Perhaps now we need to begin to think in terms of an adult daughter or sister congregation?! Please continue to pray for our Karen brothers and sisters, for wisdom and discernment and the guidance of the Holy Spirit in the coming months. 11

Regina Youth for Christ Youth for Christ (YFC) and First Baptist Church (FBC) have been partnered for several years, with YFC using our Youth Centre for the City Headquarters. Among the projects YFC operates are two residences for at risk youth who are not able to live with their families: U Turn and Jedidiah House. At present U Turn operates from a rented home, but YFC is in the process of building two homes near Orr Centre (Western Christian College). Here is an update: Uturn: Conner, a current Uturn resident, just got back from a Mexico mission trip with Healing Hearts Ministries. It was a life changing experience for him. Dan and Aimee, our current house parents are finished at Uturn on July 1, Dan will continue on staff as a missionary with Youth for Christ. Jimmy and Sarah Schimmel will be our new house parents. Worth Unlimited: Through our Jedidiah house, YFC has started a summer work project mowing lawns at 10 homes in Regina. We are looking for a utility trailer and a lawn mower. Please contact James@yfcsask.com if you can help. Uturn Home Building Project: Here are some pictures to look at. You can follow the progress week to week. YFC Satellite: YFC has had requests to establish residential homes in the Battlefords and in Moose Jaw. Moose Jaw YFC: Wes Dynna is taking the lead on the Uturn in Moose Jaw. Wes is working on a community meeting in a couple of weeks. We have put an offer on a home and will know more by June 8. Lord Willing, we will get possession on August 2. We have 2-3 weeks to get some renovations done and moved in. Dan Cronan will be our youth worker in Moose Jaw. James Clifford Executive Director 12

Katepwa Lake Camp Walk-A-Thon Katepwa Lake Camp is excited to put on its 1 st annual Walk-A-Thon fundraiser. This event will be held on Sunday, June 12 th at Candy Cane Park beside Wascana Lake in Regina. Our Goal, this summer, is to raise the money to cover the cost of having 25 kids come to camp who otherwise would not be able to afford to go. If we can raise even more than our goal amount, we can use those funds to help support the camp programme to give all our campers the best experience we can. If you would like to donate specifically towards sponsoring a child please contact the office at and specify that you are donating to the Walk-A-Thon. We would also like to invite everyone to join us at 5 p.m., as the staff are finishing their walk, for a BBQ to share in our passion for kids and camp. KATEPWA LAKE CAMP AND URBAN ADVENTURE: OFFICE CHANGES Sometime in the next week or two, KLC and Urban Adventure will be moving from space at the Youth Centre to the two vacant offices on the main floor of the church building. Rev. John Nelson, Dr. Mark McKim and our financial administrator, Krista Johnstone will continue to have their offices on the top floor. The main floor will, besides KLC and Urban Adventure, continue to have the offices of Pastor Joel Russell-MacLean and our Office Administrator, Erin Angus. Meet Your Musician CDs and DVDs ($12.00) now available in the office for those who ordered them. Please pick them up as soon as possible. If you wish to order one of these items kindly speak to Hilary Ryan. 13
