9 On Friday, October 17 th at 1:30 p.m. a memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church for the late Betty Simpkins. Rev. John Nelson will be officiating and a reception will follow the service. All are welcome. Mission Commission Fundraiser The Ebola virus has taken the lives of over 3,000 people in the three countries where the disease has yet to be contained according to the WHO. The limited health care infrastructures of Guinea, Sierra Leone, and especially Liberia have been completely overwhelmed since the outbreak began in December On top of the debilitating and deadly illness itself, the fear, curfews and quarantines have radically disrupter daily life and the economy. Many of us want to know how we can help. The Mission Commission wishes to encourage everyone to persist in prayer for the people of these countries and for those who have travelled there to help contain and end this outbreak. During the month of October, we are also asking people to support the relief work by donating above and beyond your regular church giving. Which the Mission Commission will match up to $2,000 from its budget. everyone. We had a major problem of, first of all, not accepting that Ebola exists. N - CBM is partnering with Zion Grove Baptist Church in Brewerville, Liberia (near Monrovia) as they fight to save lives within local communities. They have organized a task force to distribute sanitizers and sprays to several communities within the Brewerville area, with an overall goal of reaching over 5,000 people. 8
10 The Order of Scripture Readings: The custom of reading several Scripture lessons each Sunday goes back many centuries. The usual order is: Old Testament Lesson, Psalm, Epistle, Gospel, or Old Testament Lesson, Psalm, New Testament Lesson (either a reading from a gospel or from an epistle.) The reason behind this order is: The Old Testament is chronologically the first and oldest part of the Bible. Thus we read from here first. The Old Testament points forward The Psalms are part of the Old Testament but for the purposes of public Scripture reading they are treated separately. Why? Because for both Jews and Christians the Psalms are hymns which often help us express feelings and emotions. For Jews and for the very first Christians, they were the only hymns that existed. The psalm can be understood as a sort of response to the Old Testament reading., and a transition to the New Testament readings. much of the New Testament consists of letters written by those who were either apostles or close associates of the apostles. They are in a sense a commentary on the life and teaching of Jesus. The Gospel is always read last, because this is considered the place of honour. (Think in terms of a grand procession involving the Queen. Who always enters last? Whose car or carriage is always last?) Since each of of Himself, they are given this place of honour. In many churches the congregation always stands for the gospel reading. In this church we usually do that on special occasions such as Easter Sunday. In some churches, the custom is for there to be a small procession intended to emphasize the importance of the gospel reading. The Bible is held aloft and carried into the centre aisle of the sanctuary, preceded by a person carrying a tall cross, with one person on either side of the Scripture carrier, each holding a lighted candle. The gospel lesson is then read aloud from the centre aisle, in the midst of the standing people. 9
