FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH A Place To Belong EPHESIANS Sunday, August 9 th, :00 a.m. In the Heart of Saskatchewan s Capital City
FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH Welcome in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Bibles (blue cover) and hymnbooks (brown cover) are provided for your use. A nursery is available in the lower hall for infants and toddlers. Washrooms are also located in the lower hall. If you wish to have a cushion or hard of hearing headset, please speak to one of the ushers who will be happy to obtain these items for you. We invite you to complete one of the blue Visitor Cards in the pew rack and place it in the offering plate toward the end of the worship service. This will help us get to know you better! Please silence cell phones and other electronics. Speak softly, move slowly and allow each one present to listen for God s voice. Many people have allergies to fragrances and perfumes, so we try to keep our church a scent-free zone in consideration of the health and wellbeing of others! Thank you! Perhaps this prayer may help you begin your preparation today: O God, you sent us Jesus, our Teacher and Messiah, to make new life possible. He in turn sent the Holy Spirit so that we would not be left alone. By the power of the Spirit, open our ears, hearts and minds to your word to us this morning and grant us grace that more and more we may live the new life instead of the old. We ask this through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen. Ushers: Greeters: William Crook (Head Usher) Sanctuary: THIS COULD BE YOU! Bill & Alice Pompu Balcony: THIS COULD BE YOU! 4 Assurance of Pardon Gift of Music Scripture Reader: THE WORD OF GOD READ Karen Martin Old Testament Lesson: Exodus 16:2-4, 9-15 (O.T. pg. 62) Responsorial Lesson: Psalm 51:1-12 (O.T. pg. 520) Leader: Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Congregation: Leader: Congregation: Leader: Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you alone, have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are justified in your sentence and blameless when you pass judgement. Indeed, I was born guilty, a sinner when my mother conceived me. You desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have crushed rejoice. 3
ALL: Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit. *Gloria Patri #623 Congregation Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen. The Epistle: Ephesians 4 (N.T. pg. 193) Leader: This is the word of the Lord! People: Thanks be to God! THE WORD OF GOD PROCLAIMED *Hymn of Preparation I Believe (Tune:"Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken" #278) I believe in God the Father, the Almighty God above, Maker of the earth and heaven which were formed in God's great love. And in Jesus, loving Jesus, God's own Son, who makes us new. This, the creed of generations, is the faith for our church, too. Jesus, by God's Holy Spirit, was so wondrously conceived, Born unto the Virgin Mary, who your promises believed. Jesus suffering under Pilate, on a cross was crucified. Soldiers mocked him, friends denied him; he hung there until he died. So it was, our Lord was buried, in a borrowed tomb he lay. To the dead he then descended, where was joy on earth that day? 4
There is more to God's great story: In three days he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and he sits at God's right hand. I believe what God has promised: Christ will come as he has said. He will judge the nations' peoples, both the living and the dead. I believe God's Holy Spirit makes the church one family. We're surrounded by God's people, saints who in our Lord believe. I believe that God forgives us for the times we turn away, And that God will raise our bodies on that resurrection day. We rejoice we'll live forever, singing praise to God's great name. This, the creed of generations, is the faith that we proclaim. Sermon Old Life and New RESPONSE TO THE WORD AND RETURN TO THE WORLD *Hymn of Response A Charge to Keep I Have #448 Call to Prayer Prayers of the People The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Our Gifts & Offerings Becky Findlay *Response of Praise Give Thanks Congregation (Give thanks with a grateful heart; give thanks to the Holy One; Give thanks because He s given Jesus Christ, His Son.) x2 (And now let the weak say, I am strong, let the poor say, I am rich, Because of what the Lord has done for us.) x2 Give thanks, Give thanks. 5
Benediction *Choral Benediction The Spirit Sends Us Congregation (Tune: Azmon, #76) We GO to be the hands of Christ, to scatter joy like seed And, all our days, to cherish life, to do the loving deed. 9 John Nelson Joel Russell-MacLean Staff Out of the Office July 20-August 16- Holidays/Cont. Ed August Carey College CHAT Conference June 16-August 22 Holiday/Leave Chapters and Verses in the Bible The original manuscripts of the books of the Bible were not divided into chapters and verses. Division into chapters and verses did not happen until centuries later. The chapters and verses were intended as aids to make it easier to find things. Chapters divisions in English Bibles were created by of Stephen Langton, Cardinal-Archbishop of Canterbury, in Verses within chapters were not inserted until the 1500 s. These divisions have been criticized by some scholars who argue that the chapter and verse divisions are incoherent or are made at inappropriate points, or that they encourage citing passages out of context. For most people however, having chapter and verse numbers have become indispensable tools for Bible study. For those who so wish, there are a number of readily available English translations of the Bible which have removed all the chapter and verse numberings. Biblica published such an edition of the New International Version in 2007 and in 2011, Crossway published an English Standard Version in 2014 with the chapter and verse numbers removed. For those who prefer to use a Kindle Reader, Amazon has an e-book version of the English Standard Version without chapters or v. Versions of the Bible What does a version of the Bible mean? In popular usage version often means an updated, changed, altered design of something: Do you have the latest version of Windows on your computer? When the word version is used with respect to the Bible however, it doesn t mean updated changes or alterations from the original. A version of the Bible simply means a specific translation, from Hebrew and Greek, into English. For example, some popular versions - translations of the Bible today are the King James Version (KJV), sometimes called the Authorized Version (AV), the New International Version (NIV), and New Revised Standard Version (NRSV). Translating from one language into another is always challenging work. The different versions of the Bible all attempt to do this work of translating. Some versions emphasize literal word for word translation from Hebrew or Greek into English. This is called formal equivalence. The idea is to keep as close as possible to the form of the Hebrew or Greek, both the words and grammar, as can be put into 8
understandable English. Other versions emphasize what it called functional equivalence, that is the attempt to keep the meaning of the Hebrew or Greek but to put their words and expressions into what would be the normal way of saying the same thing in modern English. A few versions, called paraphrases attempt to translate ideas from one language to another. While paraphrase versions of the Bible (such as The Way, or The Message ) may sometimes have memorable ways of putting things, one should not rely on them for study purposes, as they tend to reflect the subjective biases of the translator. It is recommended that for study purposes a version of the Bible which leans toward an emphasis on literal, word-for-word translation, without ignoring entirely the importance of functional equivalence, is best. Versions in this range include the New Revised Standard Version, the English Standard Version, and the New International Version. CIVILITY DURING THE ELECTION Rev. Sam Chaise is the General-Secretary of Canadian Baptist Ministries (CBM), our national organization. He preached in our church in May. The following is a call for Christians to be agents of civility in the midst of the current federal election campaign. Could the churches of the land be known in the upcoming election campaign for leading the charge for civility? I was at a recent Steve Bell concert, and as part of an introduction to his next song, Steve asked this simple and startling question. Simple, because we know that the answer should be yes. (If you re not convinced, have a look at the fruit of the Spirit that is meant to mark the demeanour of followers of Jesus, and if you don t like the word civility, find one that works for you but which express the fruit of the Spirit.) But it s also a startling question, because sometimes even within the Church our discourses are not marked by civility. Politics in general, and election campaigns in specific, are meant to be about debating and discerning differences. Citizens of a nation-state have differing perspectives on how life should be organized in their society, including what roles should be played by different actors, such as government, business, civic organizations, religious groups, etc. These differences need to be discussed and debated, in the hope that consensus forms around good solutions. Yeah, I know what you re thinking. Hopelessly idealistic. Today it is more accurate to say that pre-formed solutions are marketed to voters for their consumption and allegiance. And even more accurately, that the opponents proposed solutions are torn 9
down and pilloried. Worse, often it is not a debate about ideas, but an attack on character and personhood. Ideas have become personified and caricatured, distilled into soundbites about the leaders of each political party. This does not sound like the output of the Holy Spirit. And we would not expect Holy- Spirit-fruit from those who are not filled with the Spirit. But, it would make sense that followers of Jesus, who are filled with the Holy Spirit, would engage in debate and discourse in a different way. And many of them do I have seen plenty of examples of irenic interaction among Christ-followers who have differences. But the cultural pull towards shifting into attack-mode and demonization of the opposition is powerful. Social media exacerbates this pull. To resist, we need to be reminded that every person we meet and every person we hear about is made in the image of God. That image is now corrupted, of course: that is the nature of sin. But the image is not erased. Canada is in the early days of what will be a long election campaign, where millions of dollars will be spent in a media fist fight with the goal of attaining power. Each party is convinced that they have what Canada needs for the future. Each party knows that to win power you have to play the game. That s a given. So then, this is a prime opportunity for followers of Jesus to model a different way. We will still worship alongside fellow believers who see things in a different light than we do. That s fine. That s normal. This isn t about erasing disagreement, this is about how we disagree: civilly. It s about expressing the fruit of the Spirit as we disagree. Maybe, as a start, before we read the news (and react to it) or review our Facebook feed (and respond to it), we should pray... to remind ourselves of who we are and Whose we are and of our call as Christ-followers to bring blessing to our world, and to do so in a manner that is Spirit-filled. Could the churches of the land be known in the upcoming election campaign for leading the charge for civility? If we were, imagine what a powerful witness that would be to a different way of living and of relating to others. Love your neighbour, Jesus said. I think that includes during election campaigns. 10
