7 You may have read in the Leader-Post that on June 8 th Jonathan Pedde received his degree from Dartmouth College, NH, and was named valedictorian, one of the top 5 of 1,100 graduating students from this prestigious Ivy League university. Richard, Deborah, Jonathan and Kathryn were members of our church about 10 years ago. More recently they have volunteered with CBM, using their skills in zero-till farming and economics in Rwanda and India. Jonathan is going on to Oxford with a Rhodes scholarship to continue his studies in economics. He joins Paul and Stephen Beke as the third Rhodes scholar from our church. Congratulations, Jonathan and our best wishes for your time at Oxford. We made it we are home at last! Had a great trip driving across Canada and visiting along the way. Arrived back in NB on May 6 th and turned around and left again on the 22 nd for Europe for our river boat cruise to celebrate our 40 th started out in Amsterdam, then boarded the Viking Jarl. We cruised down the Rhine, the Main and then the Danube ending up in Budapest. We visited 5 countries and many cities along our way. While it is good to be home, we already miss our SK friends. 10 From the desk of Dr. McKim usually an event or heroic figure from the Bible. THE CHURCH HAS ITS OWN CALENDAR? Yes different from the civil calendar in a variety of ways. For instance, the civil calendar begins on January 1 st begins on the First Sunday of Advent (usually in early December), a time of preparation before Christmas. In our society using the church calendar is a way to be reminded, often, that our priorities, values and worldview as Christians is very different from the priorities, values and worldview of the secular society. FEAST DAY OF JOHN THE BAPTIST: John the Baptist is such an important figure in the Bible that there are actually TWO days in the church calendar for him. June 24 th is the feast of his birth WHILE August 29 th is an observance of his death. HOW IS JUNE 24 TH OBSERVED? In some parts of Europe, it is customary, on the Feast Day of John the Hypericum perforatum), named for John the Baptist, which is used for various medicinal purposes. In other places it is customary to gather flowers and make wreaths to wear and to hang on the front door. In Poland, some of on mountains and hilltops on the eve of his feast, the fire said to represent Customary foods include strawberries in much of continental Europe. In Sweden pickled herring, boiled potatoes, sour cream, crisp bread, beer and schnapps are enjoyed on this day, while in Spain they eat figs and a savou for this day white bread broken in pieces and boiled with milk, sugar, and spices in a great pot over the fire. In Portugal, the day is celebrated with street parties. In Canada it seems that many early European explorers either were especially fond of John the Baptist or frequently seemed to 9

A few examples: led into the harbour on the Saint John, New Brunswick (Sieur de Monts and Samuel de Champlain, arrived at the mouth of what is now the St. John River on the Feast Day of John the Baptist, 1604.) While the river may be spelled either y is, in accordance with a royal charter, always spelled out in full as Saint (no abbreviation, ever), John. In Quebec, there is the village of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, the neighbourhood of Saint-Jean-Baptiste within Quebec City, and the city of St. Jean-sur-Richelieu, among many, many others. The feast day of John the Baptist is a provincial statutory holiday. JOHN THE BAPTIST IN ART: John the Baptist has been a major subject for artists for centuries. Among the best known are a series of at least eight paintings of John the Baptist by the Italian Baroque artist, Caravaggio ( ), a rather controversial painting of the Baptist by Da Vinci (controversial as it portrays John the Baptist as almost effeminate), and the bronze statue, created by Lorenzo Ghiberti, in Florence, at that point in time the largest bronze statue to be cast from a single piece for several hundred years in Italy. Symbolically, John the Baptist is often represented as a Lamb (John the Baptist, according to Scripture announced Jesus sa ) Carrying a cross, sometimes ed head appropriate, if gruesome given that John the Baptist was beheaded. In San Juan, Puerto Rico a statue of John the apparently in accusation, directly toward the building and the politicians inside it. 10
