In response, Jesus predicted his death and Resurrection. Throughout John's Gospel, the language of signs is distinctive. Jesus' miracles are called signs, and the people look to these signs for proof of his authority. Here we learn that the sign par excellence will be Jesus' passion, death, and Resurrection. During Lent we reflect upon the meaning of this sign for us and for our world. We might take this opportunity to consider the quality of our prayer and worship. In our prayers we seek to deepen our relationship with the person of Christ. In our worship with the community, we gather to experience anew the passion, death, and Resurrection of Jesus and its significance in our lives. Loyola Press

4 From the Pastor's Desk Dear St. Veronica School Families, Parish Retreat: On Saturday March 03, 115 people attended our parish Lenten Retreat as part of our holy practices for the season. This is a first of its kind at our parish. The retreat started with the Mass at 8:30 a.m. celebrated by Father Bernie Bush, S.J., from El Retiro, the Jesuit Retreat House in Los Altos. Coffee and donuts in the parish center were followed by the first session on Love that Forgives and Gives. The second session was on Encountering God in our Daily Life. With humor and insight, Father spoke inspiringly about spiritual and practical things that we can do as we journey toward the Paschal mysteries of Jesus death and resurrection. The retreat ended with an enjoyable lunch prepared and served by Joe and Carmella Da San Martino and their dedicated team. I m delighted at and encouraged by the spirit that prevailed throughout this retreat. Such spiritual activities have another benefit: they bring people together and help build up the community. Archbishop s Annual Appeal: We are coming to the end of a month-long campaign for the Archbishop s Annual Appeal. I want to thank everyone who participated in this annual effort of assisting the Archbishop in his mission. I appeal to those who are still making up their mind to hurry and help us complete this campaign. We are making steady progress in attaining the goal of $46,900. If we exceed this goal, the extra funds will be returned to our parish for our projects. My thanks are also due to the speakers over the four weeks: Tom & Pat Lama, Jim Dresser, and Suzanne Nazario. The open secret of success is that everyone needs to participate in such efforts. Only then can we be the strong community that we are called to be. Do You Know about the Loan Repayment for our Parish Center? We enjoy the Parish Center for various needs. The sports activities and the school events use the facility to their great satisfaction. The weekly parish hospitality is hosted in the Center. However, are you aware that we have a debt on that facility? Every month, our parish makes the loan repayment of $4,300 to the Archdiocese. That amounts to $51,600 each year. At this point, given the interest rate, we still have $350,488 to pay off this loan, which would take the next several years The Questions & the Book Club: This month, we are reading a book called Sleeping with Bread: Holding What Gives You Life. It is about the spiritual process of finding God s will in the choices we make on a daily basis. It invites us to ask these questions: For what moment today am I mostly grateful? For what moment today am I least grateful? When did I give and receive the most love today? When did I give and receive the least love today? When did I feel most alive today? When did I most feel life draining out of me? When today did I have the greatest sense of belonging to myself, others, God and the universe? When did I have the least sense of belonging? When was I happiest today? When was I saddest? What was today s high point? What was today s low point? These questions could lead us to a deeper awareness of life. This is in keeping with the Lenten calling for a new spirit and a new heart. Grade-level Mass: Last Sunday at the 9:30 a.m. Mass, the 4 th graders from St. Veronica School and Faith Formation were in full attendance with their families. It s a delightful sight to see the church full and overflowing on such occasions. Sunday (weekend) Mass is one of the fundamental things we do as Catholics. I encourage all children and parents and grandparents to inspire each other to come to Mass. It is Jesus himself who hosts the meal of the Eucharist. In him we can find ourselves and our fulfillment. After the 9:30 a.m. Mass, the teeming hospitality in the parish center was a sure sign that the table fellowship continued into the social arena. Talking about hospitality, did you see the article in the Catholic San Francisco last week (March 02) on what we do for hospitality on Sundays? Irish Blessings: This Saturday, we host the Luck of the Irish Dinner. The actual feast of St. Patrick is on March 17. In view of these happy occasions, let me share with you these beautiful blessings arriving all the way from the Emerald Isle: I-rish you a very nice place to live, I-rish God's greatest gifts he'll give. I-rish you health, and wealth, and more, I-rish your smilin' face were at my door. May St. Patrick guard you wherever you go, and guide you in whatever you do and may his loving protection be a blessing to you always. May the raindrops fall lightly on your brow. May the soft winds freshen your spirit. May the sunshine brighten your heart, May the burdens of the day rest lightly upon you. And may God enfold you in the mantle of His love. He was captured and sold into slavery in Ireland as a teenager. He escaped, but he dreamed Ireland's children were calling to him, and returned to Ireland as a missionary. Patrick's most famous prayer shows us how close he was to God. It's called St. Patrick's Breastplate. A breastplate is the piece of armor that protects a soldier's heart from harm. Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) This Sunday brings us closer to the font of renewing our baptismal commitment. It is also the first of three Scrutinies for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. We are deeply aware that there is a struggle going on in us. We turn to God, that we might not become discouraged. We rely on God's compassion and love for us. We acknowledge who we are sinners who experience the consequences of our selfishness but we know we are loved and we desire to be filled with hope. We go into this week renewed in our desire to continue our prayer, fasting and generosity toward others. PRAYER OF THE WEEK March 11, 2012, Third Sunday of Lent O God, author of every mercy and of all goodness, who in fasting, prayer and almsgiving have shown us a remedy for sin, look graciously on this confession of our lowliness, that we, who are bowed down by our conscience, may always be lifted up by your mercy.
