Davila Reflecting on the Word The devil made me do it! Invariably this is uttered in an attempt at self-exoneration from bad behavior. The first reading might lead us to think that the human race might attempt such a self-exoneration. After all, if the devil had not tempted Eve and Adam, they would never have disobeyed God and we would not be in the mess that we are in today. While not denying the importance of the devil s temptation, however, the Christian tradition has always laid the blame for sin squarely on the shoulders of Adam and Eve, our ancestors in disobedience. While evil forces might provide the occasion for our turning away from God, no demonic power can force us to do anything against our will, no matter how severely they may tempt us. Temptation is something we give in to. At the same time, sin has made our wills to feeble that we cannot resist temptation without God s grace. As Lent begins, it is important to bear in mind both that our sins are our own responsibility - the devil did not make us do it - and that we need the grace of Christ in order to turn back to God. Lent is an appeal to our freedom and a reminder that we need God s grace in order to use that freedom well. - from Living the Word

4 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners, Season of Lent: This special season started with a bang on Ash Wednesday, when most Catholics come out into the church in big numbers. We had our foreheads marked with the words, Remember, you are dust and to dust you will return. It s pretty strong language; a wake -up call. The meaning of the ashes accompanied with this reminder is that our lives in this world are not permanent. In fact, we do not own anything, even though we have an illusion of it. If we really, really owned anything, we should be able to take it into the next world. Since obviously we cannot take anything beyond this world, we are only entrusted with certain things and blessings in this world, which we need to be responsible stewards of. In other words, we are to gain perspective on what to do in this life, how to live and love, how to relate to people and things, what is important and what is not, what is eternal and what is not, what matters and what doesn t, what is true happiness and what isn t. When we are able to see these things better, it is then we truly begin to live from the soul. Lent is a special time to figure these things out. Sometimes, we can go through decades of life or a whole lifetime, without discovering what God wants us to do and how he wants us to live. While we are engaged in all sorts of spiritual activities this season, let all these efforts converge on a deepening and maturing of our relationship with God and others where love and humility flourish. Happy hunting this season of Lent---for things money cannot buy! March Grade-Level Mass: Last Sunday we celebrated Mass with the 8 th graders from our school and Confirmation Year One students from our Faith Formation program. It was a well-attended Mass with these children s families in attendance as well. One of the great responsibilities of the grown-ups is to encourage and inspire the young---and pass on the faith to the next generation. I think that at St. Veronica we make genuine efforts at this mission of sharing faith, nurturing hope, encouraging love, and inspiring service. I invite the parents to join the Mass on weekends not just for the gradelevel Masses, but every weekend, especially in this holy season of Lent. Mass is like family dinner. The family is St. Veronica community, gathering week after week, to be fed at the liturgy of the Word and the liturgy of the Eucharist. This eating together as family enlightens, nourishes, graces, and empowers us. Come one, come all, to the banquet Christ himself hosts, at which he feeds us with the bread of life. Here we drink from the springs of salvation. Youth Ministry: At some Masses, young people from our Youth Ministry spoke about what they do and what they stand for, inviting other young people to join them. Our youth are wonderful young women and men who have been meeting on a weekly basis, sharing friendships and faith. They do a great job of leading the Confirmation retreat for those preparing for the sacrament. They attend a retreat once a year and volunteer at some of the parish events. I appreciate their spirit of service and friendship, their good will and cheerfulness. I have also been encouraging them to be more visible at the weekend Masses and hospitality, to pray together with St. Veronica parishioners and get to know the people. Who knows, one of these days some of them would be lectors and Eucharistic Ministers, taking an even more active part in our faith celebrations. They have been having conversations recently of how to combine the social and spiritual at St. Veronica. My special thanks are due to Dave Silva, Cherilyn Cabral, and Karen Guglielmoni for leading these young people in their ministry of faith and service. The Youth Group meets Sundays at 7 p.m. in the Pastoral Center. I invite all teens of our parish to consider becoming involved and encourage all of their parents to aide them in their decision! Word of God: Temptation & Sin: In the first reading this First Sunday of Lent, we are told how the first parents were tempted and succumbed to sin. In the gospel, Jesus is tempted, but he stands his ground and overcomes temptations. In the second reading, Paul contrasts the first Adam with the second Adam, Jesus, on the basis of sin and grace. Jesus is faithful to his Father and to all of us. This season of reappraisal and renewal, the Word of God challenges us to look at the many situations, where we are being led astray by all sorts of enticements and attractions. While none of us is perfect, we are invited to keep making the effort at holiness and wholeness. This is what Lent is all about. Food for Thought: Spread love everywhere you go: first of all in your own house. Give love to your children, to your wife or husband, to a next door neighbor... Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God's kindness; kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile, kindness in your warm greeting. - Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta Catholic Joke: The End is Near!: Father Boudreaux and Pastor Thibodeaux were fishing on the side of the road. They thoughtfully made a sign saying De End is Near! Turn yourself around now before it's too late! and showed it to each passing car. Well this one car that passed didn't appreciate the sign and was shouting at them: Leave us alone you religious nuts! All of a sudden they heard a big splash, looked at each other, and Father Boudreaux said... You think we should just put up a sign that says Bridge Out instead? Your Friend & Pastor, Father Charles Puthota
