It is much easier to think of Jesus as the forgiving, compassionate, tender shepherd who is out there looking for us than as the one who comes in glory to judge and separate out the goats and the lambs. After all, who wants to be counted among the goats? So, pick your area that will help you to be counted among the sheep. Food distribution, environmental concerns, immigration reform, clothing include here those nets that can save lives threatened by various issues surrounding health care, or prison reform. Perhaps you thought this was one of those quaint stories Jesus tells that seems so long ago and far away. The last we hear from the Gospel of Matthew for this year invites your participation now. The reason? When you do something for them, you do it for him! Can you bring together images of Jesus as both shepherd and judge? Can you hear in today s Gospel an invitation to a fuller life? 4 From the Pastor's Desk Dear Parishioners, Feast of Christ the King: The last Sunday of the liturgical year is Christ the King Sunday. We still celebrate this eternal King, when kings and queens are no longer the rulers of nations anymore. If there are still kings and queens in the world, they are mere figureheads, engaged in ceremonial functions rather than in determining the direction and policy of nations. They are a thing of the past intruding clumsily into the present. In fact, the vitality of democracies is measured by the absence of kings and queens and the presence of robust participation of people in the destiny of nations. This was expressed eloquently by Abraham Lincoln in his famous Gettysburg speech when he celebrated that government of the people, by the people, and for the people. And yet, we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. Jesus rules over our hearts, the world, and the whole universe. He rules not with pomp and power, control and coercion, but through love, service, and humility. He is the King who sacrifices his life for us. He is the supreme King worthy of our love and loyalty, our adoration and respect, our dedication and surrender. We cannot find a more humble king, more generous king, more selfless king, more forgiving king, more honorable king. The whole universe belongs to him, and yet he seems content to wash the feet of his followers, urging them to do the same. As St. Paul says, this king emptied himself, became obedient unto death and because of that God raised him above everything so that every knee might bend before him and every tongue proclaim that he is Lord. The gospel today from Matthew 25 is probably the most consequential passage in the whole of the Bible. Jesus the king and judge will finally evaluate our lives not on the glory we have achieved, not on the wealth accumulated, not on the degrees acquired, not on the power wielded, but on the simple acts of kindnesses shown toward others. We do not have to do anything earthshaking. It s enough if we can do small things of compassion and love to others. Whenever we do come to the help of those deprived of basic needs and necessities of life, we actually come to the help of Jesus himself. This King identifies himself with the suffering humanity. Ah, what a King we have to love and follow! Happy Thanksgiving: We can carry the spirit of Christ the King into Thanksgiving because Jesus the King did celebrate table fellowship and made a simple meal full of significance by establishing the Eucharist. American transcendentalist philosopher-poet Ralph Waldo Emerson gives thanks thus: For flowers that bloom about our feet; For tender grass, so fresh, so sweet; For song of bird, and hum of bee; For all things fair we hear or see, Father in heaven, we thank Thee! William Shakespeare says: O Lord that lends me life, lend me a heart replete with thankfulness. Izaak Walton is certain: God has two dwellings; one in heaven, and the other in a meek and thankful heart. A Native American tradition urges us: Give thanks for unknown blessings already on their way. This year at Thanksgiving, what are we thankful for? Material blessings? Spiritual blessings? Family blessings? Personal blessings? Universal blessings? We can never thank God enough for the abundance, diversity, and multiplicity of blessings. May the Lord continue to bless us, and may the good Lord bless others through us, so that the blessings of God can go round and round all over the world. And With Your Spirit!: Next weekend, the First Sunday of Advent, the Church is introducing some changes in the Mass prayers and responses. It is all done in good faith and with deep theological connotations. We have been preparing for months for these changes through our various bulletin announcements and information. In the first few weeks, we (including the priests!) may be stumbling through the revised prayers, but it would be exciting to adapt to the changes and continue to raise our voices and hearts in prayer to God. One helpful step would be for everyone to follow the text of the prayers provided in the cards and the missalettes. The Lord be with you! And with your spirit! Your Friend and Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

5 After years of discussion and months of preparation, it s finally here! Next weekend churches all over the United States will begin using the Third Edition of the Roman Missal. At selected masses this weekend, our new liturgical books will be blessed so they are ready for use on the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, Join in the renewed spirit of the Mass by taking up your missal and hymnal as we all learn together the new prayers and responses of our Mass. 2do. 6 A Prayer for Thanksgiving This week s Scripture Puzzle. Good luck! Father all-powerful, Your gifts of love are countless and Your goodness infinite. On Thanksgiving Day we come before You with gratitude for Your kindness: open our hearts to concern for our fellow men and women, so that we may share Your gifts in loving service. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen 2007 Catholic Doors Ministry Have an extra coat in your closet? Girl Scout Troop One Warm Coat Drive Answer to last week s Scripture Crossword Puzzle. How did you do? Last year with your help we collected the most coats in the area for one Troop and one organization! We thank you! We are 7 th graders who go to St. Veronica School and have been together in our troop since 1 st grade. We are MacKenzie Carman, Melissa Chircop, Irene Gonzalez, Savannah Grubbs, Morgan McCarthy and Leanne Yuen. This year we are helping two organizations instead of just one the Shelter Networks and CALL Primrose. These organizations help anyone in need in our community. You can help us by donating new or used coats, any sizes. We can also take cash and then go and purchase coats with the money. We enjoy being a part of our community and giving back to others in this way. You can also help us to bring a smile to others faces. We will be present to greet you during Masses on the weekends of Dec 3 and Dec 10 th. Come on by and say hello! Collection Boxes will be located in the church vestibule and in the school library on behalf of CALL Primrose and Shelter Network L I G H T A N D R U M O O S E E A L
