1 FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 751 Franklin Street ~ Carlyle, IL Pastor: Rev. Dean Beals Phone: (618) ~ Fax: (618) ~ carlylefumc@gmail.com ~ Website: carlylefumc.org Volume 8, Issue 8 Auguat 2016 PRAYER FOCUS: BACK TO SCHOOL Proverbs 23:12: Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge. (NIV) Living God, as we begin this new school year, we give thanks that you have given us the ability to learn many things in many different ways. We learn in school, but also in church, in our family, in our community, and in the world. All learning is a gift from you. We ask your blessing on this new school year, that it may be a time when your gift of learning is appreciated and fully used. We ask you to bless our schools and teachers, our students, our principals, counselors, and librarians. We ask you to bless those who prepare lunches, drive students to school, and those who keep our schools clean and safe. We give thanks for books and computers and all the things that help us learn. Thank you, God, for the gift of learning. Amen. -Prayer adapted from A Back to School Litany, Discipleship Ministries, United Methodist Church. + Christian Symbol + Sevenfold Flame Tongues of fire are a common symbol of the Holy Spirit, based on the Pentecost events of Acts 2. However, when seven flames are depicted together, they also represent the seven gifts of the Spirit as named in Isaiah 11:2-3: wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, fear of the Lord and delight in the fear of the Lord (sometimes paraphrased "joy in the Lord's presence"). 3 Volume 8, Issue 8 Page 3 CRAFT DAY AT ASSISTED LIVING In the last few months, several of us ladies have been enjoying a ministry where we visit Assisted Living once a month and share a craft with the residents in Assisted Living and Supportive Living. We now have 12 residents taking part. We would welcome any help from the congregation. If you have a craft to share or want to participate with us it s always a Wednesday at 2 PM. The Wednesday after we have communion we serve communion there, and the Wednesday after that we do a craft. The residents totally enjoy our time there and we feel we have met a need there. Also fellowship with each other and letting the residents feel they are accomplishing a craft they can take with them. It s great to see the pride they take in their accomplishment. Let me know if you are interested Jane Buchele CARD MINISTRY Thank you to all the ladies who were here to begin the Card Ministry! Frannie Koehler, Jane Buchele, Vicky Geest, Sharon King, Sherry White and Dala Lawrence spent a good portion of the day going over lists and preparing cards to be sent to members. THANK YOU! For those interested in joining us, we will be meeting again on August 26th at 10 AM in the Conference Room. CHILDREN S MESSAGE We are looking for volunteers for the Children s Message. If you are interested in the Frog, Puppet or some other format of children s message, please contact Pastor Dean or the church office. There are resources for you. If we have several people we can work out a rotation. CHURCH TABLES FOR SALE We have replaced the Fellowship Hall tables and are selling the old tables. We have two 8 ft. tables for $12.00 each. If you would like to purchase one, see David Huene or Leila in the church office. GRIEFSHARE A new GriefShare group will be starting on September 7, 2016 and will meet from 10 AM - Noon. We will meet in the Conference Room across from the church office. If you are suffering as a result of losing someone dear to you we would love to have you join us. It does not matter if your loss occurred recently or years ago - we want to help you learn how you can deal with the pain in a healthy and healing manner.

4 Page 4 Some of you may remember the opening introduction to the television show Ben Casey, which aired in the early 1960s. I remember watching it as a young child. The opening has wise old Dr. Zorba reciting and writing on a chalkboard the symbols for the following: Man. Woman. Life. Death. Infinity. I was thinking of the show s opening as I pondered over some events that occurred during the same week several years ago. In that week, a much-beloved member of the charge I pastored passed away and our first granddaughter, Gracie, was born. One was, of course, a sorrowful occasion and the other a joyous one. As I remembered the television program s opening scene, I pondered the meaning of the seasons of life (including birth to death and all that is in between) as well as its continuity (from one generation to the next to infinity ). Throughout these times we give pause to ponder the existential questions such as: What is there to this existence, why are we here, and what about God s purposes? Words from the Heart I am reminded of the verse in Ecclesiastes 3, which begins: For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted. This passage tells us that throughout life there is a time or a season in which to do something and another time or season in which to do the opposite. But yet, there s more. Eugene Peterson authored a paraphrase of the Bible called The Message. He gives these comments on this chapter of Ecclesiastes, and they can help us when we come to grips with the questions of life and death in our existence. This vibrant poetic passage looks at what seem to be opposites birth and death, planting and reaping, crying and laughing and rather than contrasting them, it incorporates them. It says that these are the realities of life that God puts together in his time, not ours. God invades our experience, whether that experience is joyful or sorrowful, and fills it with his presence, infuses it with his grace, and gives it meaning. We prefer the joyful experiences to the sorrowful ones, but the gospel brings them together and says, essentially, that to God it doesn t make any difference. The time

5 Volume 8, Issue 8 you are in, whether it is birth or death, laughing or weeping, is God s time. He can bring his presence into each and every experience of life. And with his presence, his peace. (from Conversations: The Message Bible with Its Translation) The first fifteen verses of Chapter 3 give us insights on our existence in light of God s eternity. God has put a sense of past and future into [our] minds... (verse 11). Some translations say that God has set eternity into our minds. Because we are created in the image of God, we seek the spiritual; furthermore, we are important in God s sight, and only the God of eternity (or infinity ) can satisfy us. He has given us a restless yearning for eternal things (Jesus called it the Kingdom of God ), and at times we have glimpses of the eternal. Ordinary answers will not satisfy our yearning of the eternal. Peterson says that there is more than just seeking these answers; in the end, we can only be satisfied with God himself: The mind is in touch with eternity and restless to know the mysteries of God s being. Created that way, the mind can never be satisfied with mere answers. It can only be satisfied with God himself, who is so much more Page 5 than answers. Ultimately, it isn t God s answers we want, but his affection; it isn t a divine education we re after, but enjoyment of the divine, which is why the book of Ecclesiastes concludes with a chapter that begins with this admonition: Honor and enjoy your Creator (12:1, emphasis added [by Peterson]). The purpose of life is to fear God. It means, according to a note in the Life Application Bible, to respect, revere, and stand in awe of God because of who he is. Purpose in life starts with whom we know, not what we know or how good we are. That means to honor and enjoy the God who created us. The bottom line is that we are called to trust God while we live our life and do his will on this earth. Whatever happens during our existence ( a time to plant, a time to reap, a time to laugh, a time to cry, for instance) takes place in God s time. Again our call is to honor and enjoy God, being in his presence, seeking first his kingdom in this life. Doing so will lead us to a fulfilling, meaningful, and purposeful life. In Christ, Pastor Dean

6 Page 6 Words from the Heart Women s Bible Study Fall 2016 Join Beth Moore in Living Beyond Yourself: Exploring the Fruit of the Spirit, a study of the fruit of The Holy Spirit as presented in the book of Galatians. Beth walks participants through each trait listed and encourages women to know the freedom of a Spirit-filled life Through this study participants will look at the supernatural aspects of the fruit and understand that one cannot grow, learn, or produce the fruit on her own. Beth challenges women to develop their fruit by maintaining an intimate relationship with the Spirit of God. A Spiritfilled life truly results in living beyond yourself.
