1 FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 751 Franklin Street ~ Carlyle, IL Pastor: Rev. Keith A. Michaels Phone: (618) ~ Fax: (618) ~ carlylefumc@gmail.com ~ Website: carlylefumc.org Volume 7, Issue 7 July 2015 PRAYER FOCUS: FREEDOM Loving God; we celebrate the 4th of July and freedom this month. We continue to pray for freedom. AMEN Awash in Sunlight In summer 2003, I received news that my 95-year-old grandmother, a faithful follower of Jesus, had died. Right afterward, my husband and I took our two young girls outside to catch our breath only to find a special symbol of new life waiting for us. On the porch railing sat a strange-looking, wriggling lump. Upon closer investigation, we saw a tiger swallowtail emerging from its cocoon body still plump and wings still wet. Before the huge butterfly tried out its wings and flew away, we had a few moments to take photos of it with our daughters. We still marvel at the timing. We had named our baby after Grandma, but they hadn t yet met. A stunning creature, sent just when we needed it, reminded us that baby Carrie would meet Grandma Carrie someday in heaven, where we ll all be made new. 2 Page 2 s from the Heart Everest: Conquering Challenges with God s Mighty Power! We had a successful week at Everest VBS! We learned how God overcomes all challenges in life. Kids and volunteers had a wonderful time singing songs, visiting Bible Village, experiencing stories, playing games, and eating snacks. We had 58 kids join us for VBS this year, and almost 30 volunteers helped throughout the week to make our program successful. Thank you to all who were here to help spread the love of God to the children of our church and community. Each day we introduced a Bible Point that the kids learned and responded to. Every time they heard the Bible Point, they shouted, Hold On! We could hear shouts of Hold On echo through the church all week as the kids learned the five Bible Points: 1. God has the power to provide. 2. God has the power to comfort. 3. God has the power to heal. 4. God has the power to forgive. 5. God has the power to love us forever. Our mission money this week went to the United Methodist Children s Home in Mt. Vernon; they provide Christ-centered human resources to 794 kids, families, and churches in the area. We raised a total of $ from our VBS offerings, surpassing our goal of $150. Thank you to all who have donated to this worthy cause! We also owe a huge thank you to all who volunteered time to paint, decorate, and work at Everest, and we thank all who donated snacks and other items to Everest! Your generosity overwhelmed us! We appreciate the support that you have offered for VBS; we had a great time at Everest VBS! The Everest Crew

4 Page 4 A Message from Pastor Keith Lord, You are the Potter, we are the clay. s from the Heart Have you ever felt like you were on the outside? When I began the journey of the ordained United Methodist minister in August of 1983, my counseling elder (ordained person to guide one through the process) informed me that as a pastor you would always be on the outside. Wow what a way to start ministry! I was shocked. Not exactly sure what he meant, but I just chalked it up and actually forgot about it. Well, for a while. When I got into my first real concern with the church folk, I found out what my counseling member warned me about. The church folk circled the wagons and I found myself, even with some friends I had made, on the outside of the church. Needless to say, I was devastated. Even my friends took side with the congregation. I thought I learned my lesson, but wait there is more. Every congregation I have pastured, has at one point put me, the pastor, on the outside of the congregation. Being on the outside has different views, but still on the outside. What I finally realized is that I as pastor, will be at any one place for a limited time. Therefore, I could not be completely included in the church family. Not only through disputes but also not included in special event parties like, graduation, confirmation, birthdays, Christmas gatherings, promised boat rides, etc. Being a pastor can and is a lonely place at times. Oh yes, I have been invited out for lunches and dinners, even told that I and Joanne would be invited to their house for a get together. Unfortunately the invite to the home never came to fruition. Actually we pastors are just not thought about at certain times because we are on the outside. Pastors are not alone on this issue. All of us at one time or another have been on the outside of the event. Not invited, or just plain forgotten. This happens everyday in our lives. People don t mean to be mean-spirited, we just get side-tracked and we forget. However, there are times when we are intentionally left outside. This happens for a lot of different reasons, but it still is hurtful. My source of comfort and help that I want to share with every one reading this article is Jesus Christ. I know that I am never left outside the grace of Jesus the Christ. I know that when I fell alone, left out, put aside; Jesus wraps me in his arms and comforts my wounded heart. Even with Jesus as my Lord and Savior, it still hurts when I or any one for that matter, is put on the outside. Not being acknowledged is extremely difficult to overcome. All of us want to be included. All of us want to be recognized. All of us need to be included to some degree. Our saving Grace, then, is the assurance of inclusion on the last days. When we will be invited to join our God, our Christ and all the angels in the kingdom of heaven. What a glorious day that will be. Pastor Keith Ps my surgery is July 14th. I will be down for a few weeks. Please pray for me that this surgery will go well and I will be healed. And pray for Joanne as she will be my caretaker. Thank you.

A quatrefoil in art or architecture is the outline of four partially overlapping circles of the same diameter. In Christian tradition, it represents the writers of the four gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke and John which overlap one another partially but not entirely, and are equally important to our understanding of Jesus.
