1 November 2016 The Briarwood Vision Rev. Charles N. Bowdler, Senior Pastor Volume 19 Issue 11 Dear Briarwood Family of Faith: It s hard to believe, but the holiday season is just around the corner. This Sunday we will conclude our stewardship emphasis by dedicating our pledge cards and celebrating with a wonderful meal together following the service. The next Sunday is the last Sunday in Ordinary Time (Christ the King Sunday). Then we have our Community Thanksgiving Service at Briarwood United Methodist Church on Tuesday, November 22 at 6:30 p.m. Thanksgiving follows, of course, on Thursday. I pray that you will enjoy a particularly blessed Thanksgiving with family and friends. I will be traveling to see my mother in Virginia, and my son Jonathan and his girlfriend will be flying in from Seattle to join us. The first Sunday of Advent is Sunday, November 27, the Hanging of the Greens is Saturday, December 3, and the Chancel Choir is singing accompanied by the Capital Brass on Sunday, December 11. We are planning our normal Christmas Eve reception followed by a service of Lessons and Carols on December 24. Christmas Day falls on a Sunday this year. We will meet at our usual time, but it will be a casual Sunday, so come as you are. We are planning an abbreviated service with lots of scripture, carols, and a special time for the children. The holiday season is a time for special offerings and mission. This year we are participating in Operation Christmas Child. You will have the opportunity to assemble a shoe box for a boy or a girl. Each box should have one special toy (a doll, ball, or stuffed animal), it should also include small toys, hygiene items, and school supplies. If you can, also donate seven dollars to off-set the cost of overseas shipping. Finally, pray for the child who will receive your box. This is a wonderful, hands on mission that touches children all around the world. We are also collecting scarfs, socks, gloves, and coats for Lizzie Cooper s Kids. These are the kinds of mission actions that fit with our new vision. Finally, we will be receiving the Joy Gift offering on Sunday, December 18. As you can see, Thanksgiving and Advent are chocked full of opportunities for worship, celebration, fellowship, and mission. I pray that God will richly bless your observance of the holidays with a sense of His presence, the joy of the Holy Spirit, a generous heart, and love for God and neighbor. Yours with Christ, Charles Newsletter 1
