FROM THE FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR AND LADIES AUXILIARY PRESIDENT: Brother Knights & Ladies, We wanted to start by congratulating Bishop Hermann on the 54rd anniversary of his Ordination to the Priesthood on March 30, Thank you for all you do. Next, we wanted to congratulate our 25 Brother Sir Knights who recently completed their 4 th Degree. Welcome to the Holy Spirit Assembly. Their names are listed later in the newsletter. Special thanks goes to our Exemplification Chairman Jeff Grotegeers and ALL of the Knights and ladies who worked so hard preparing for and ensuring a successful hospitality suite and exemplification. The Holy Spirit Assembly received a number of compliments. Additional congratulations go to the ladies for their hard work and success on the raffles of the Pope John Paul II print as well as the raffle basket. I have been traveling a lot in recent months. I usually enjoy people watching when I do. Unfortunately these days I see much more hubris than humility. People jumping to conclusions about other without all the fact, sitting in judgement of others, and relentlessly pointing fingers at others instead of taking responsibility for their actions, or lack thereof. That s arrogant, prideful thinking, devoid of kindness or any acknowledgement of their own shortcomings. This is completely different than what I was taught be humble, pray and seek God, and admit when you are wrong and repent your sins. I hope there are more of us that continue to lead by example and begin to turn the tide of humility vs hubris. 2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Switching gears.it is hard to believe lent is in full swing and Holy Week is fast approaching. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, the real aim of Lent is, above all else, to prepare men for the celebration of the death and Resurrection of Christ the better the preparation the more effective the 2 celebration will be. One can effectively relive the mystery only with purified mind and heart. The purpose of Lent is to provide that purification by weaning men from sin and selfishness through self-denial and prayer, by creating in them the desire to do God s will and to make His kingdom come by making it come first of all in their hearts. Hopefully everyone had a spiritual renewal and I pray everyone has a Happy Easter. Let s continue to give of ourselves for the benefit of others and the benefit of our souls. Let s be part of the T.E.A.M. because (Together Everyone Achieves More) Respectfully, David & Michelle Goetz Faithful Navigator & Ladies Auxiliary President FEBRUARY MEETING NOTES: The February meeting notes are published on the Assembly website and were mailed with hard copies of the February Newsletter. 7 DID YOU KNOW We will continue our introductions of an officer or select member of the Assembly or a Parish in the Assembly in March. I THOUGHT YOU SHOULD KNOW JESUS OFFERS THE UNQUENCHABLE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Bishop Robert J. Hermann Submitted on March 09, 2017 The readings for the Third Sunday of Lent are simultaneously simple and overwhelmingly profound. Our eyes see and our hearts hear of physical water, but our spirits hunger and thirst for the Holy Spirit. In the first reading, the Israelites thirst for water to nurture their bodies, but their spirits are even thirstier for meaning. They are profoundly frustrated with being in the desert without water, whereas in Egypt they had plenty of water. At that moment, they would gladly have traded their physical freedom for their former slavery, if only they could have water for their thirsty bodies. Their complaints get to Moses. They're frustrated with Moses, who is frustrated with God. "What shall I do with this people? A little more and they will stone me!" "The Lord answered Moses, 'Go over there in front of the people, along with some of the elders of Israel, holding in your hand, as you go, the staff with which you struck the river. I will be standing there in front of you on the rock in Horeb. Strike the rock, and the water will flow from it for the people to drink.'" God gave them the water they desired, flowing from the rock. This water was another sign intended to lift their eyes above physical nourishment, and open their eyes to the gift of faith. Throughout their desert journey, God worked signs and wonders to nurture their faith. They didn't understand that through the trials and difficulties, He was forming them into a believing community of faith. Ever so gradually, God opened their eyes to see that He really was a part of the equation in their desert life. Does that ring a bell for us? Isn't it true that we're like the Israelites? We too have short memories of His goodness and too often we ask: "What has God done for us lately?" What He has done for us, and what He continues to do, is truly marvelous, but we miss most of it entirely because we lack faith 7

The Gospel story of the woman at the well is among the most remarkable stories in the Gospels. It's packed with so much meaning. Alone at the well, Jesus is tired and wants a moment's rest while the disciples go off to get provisions. When a Samaritan woman comes to draw water, He opens a conversation with her. This is most unusual because Jews didn't typically talk to Samaritans. "How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?" she asked. Just as Satan opened a conversation with Eve in the Garden of Eden to lead her out of her earthly paradise, so Jesus opens a conversation with the Samaritan woman to lead her into a heavenly paradise. He is simply thirsty and asks for a drink of water. When she objected, Jesus said: "If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water.... Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again; but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water willing up to eternal life." After she replies and asks for this water, Jesus asks her to call her husband. The woman suddenly realizes that she has been found out; she knows He knows her sins. But she then realizes that her past sinfulness need no longer be a barrier because He offers living water, the unquenchable Spirit of God. Jesus started with a request for water, but He really thirsted for her faith. He led her to a realization of her sinfulness and then to her thirst for the living God. She was so transformed by His desire for her inclusion in the faith, that she became an evangelist to the Samaritans, who begged Jesus to stay for two days. We have the same hunger for the infinite love of the Holy Spirit, but like the Israelites and the woman at the well, we misinterpret our hungers. We think we're hungering for more wealth, power, prestige or pleasure, yet none of these ever satisfy our spiritual thirst. Jesus would say to us, "If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water." Daily Jesus offers us the unquenchable gift of the Holy Spirit. Lent is a time for prayer, fasting and the giving of alms. These spiritual exercises lift our hearts above the senses. These exercises engender an intimacy with the God we can't see, but our hearts perceive. Prayer, fasting and almsgiving bring our spirits alive. They're spiritual food for our hungry and thirsting souls. They speak to our need for the infinite. They speak to our hunger for the things of the next life. They bring a sense of peace and satisfaction to our souls. Aside from the frequent reception of Confession and the Holy Eucharist, the Stations of the Cross is one of the most effective devotions available to use. The more we enter into the Stations of the Cross and the love beneath His sufferings, the more we're drawn to suffer with Him. Love for His passion draws us forward with joy. 8

CIVIC COMMITTEE REPORT Our partners in the battle to educate children and save mothers and their babies, Thrive St. Louis and Best Choice have been under attack by pro-abortion activists and the complicit media including the Post-Dispatch. They need our help and our prayers to weather yet another unwarranted storm and emerge victorious to continue helping students, mothers/fathers, and children. ****************************************************************************** Today, we see throughout parts of the Middle East, Africa and Asia the brutal persecution, torture and killing of Christians. This month, the Knights of Columbus is urging its members and other people of faith to pray a Novena of Grace and Solidarity for Christians suffering persecution. The novena is based on a prayer in honor of St. Francis Xavier by Italian Father Marcello Mastrilli, a missionary to Japan who was martyred for the faith. Please join in praying this Novena of Grace and Solidarity, beginning on Sunday, March 12, and concluding on Monday, March 20. The novena may also be prayed any time throughout the year. The novena prayer can be found here. For more information on the persecution of Christians and details on how you can help relieve some of their suffering, click here. 9

WHY THE AMERICAN FLAG IS FOLDED 13 TIMES Have you ever noticed on TV or at military funerals that the honor guard pays meticulous attention to correctly folding the American flag 13 times? This article presents information that each fold of the U.S. flag has an important meaning. 1. The first fold of our flag is a symbol of life. 2. The second fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life. 3. The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing our ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world. 4. The fourth fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in time of war for His divine guidance. 5. The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, "Our Country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong." 6. The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all. 7. The seventh fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag against all her enemies, whether they are found within or without the boundaries of our republic. 8. The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor mothers, for whom it flies on Mother's Day. 9. The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood; for it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded. 10. The tenth fold is a tribute to the father, for he, too, has given His sons and daughters for the defense of our country since they were first born. 11. The eleventh fold, in the eyes of a Hebrew citizen represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon, and glorifies in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 12. The twelfth fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit. 13. When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding us of our nation's motto, "In God We Trust". After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the sailors and marines who served under Captain John Paul 12

Jones. Those who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for us the rights, privileges, and freedoms we enjoy today. 13
