It is that time when all the final loose ends are tied down and all of the Council programs lean toward completion. It is that time to take a quick review of the Council plans: Were the membership and insurance goals attained? Perhaps a bit more needs to be done to reach those goals so recruit a new member today! Many Brothers are unaware of the extent of the various Officer s responsibilities. June: Lecturer: The lecturer is appointed by the grand knight to provide both educational and entertaining programs to the council. It is he who is responsible for the Good of the Order portion of council meetings. In order to provide all the members with programs that are both informative and educational he must be knowledgeable and aware of all council programming. DEGREES GK Bill Cook is shown presenting a check to County coordinator Maggie Riggall of Special Olympics April 23 from their Tootsie Roll collections. Citizens with disabilities drive Does your Council have a story or a story with pictures as to where the donations collected from this year s campaign were assigned? If so, I would like to hear from you. Let me know so we can share with all the Brothers in the Councils within the District the real time stories relating to our First Principle: The gift of CHARITY! 2 The steps of Progression! Step #1: Charity Step #2: Unity Step #3: Fraternity Step #4: Patriotism Encourage progression in our Order! Encourage member progression and present the Degree certificates at the next Council meeting!
Scheduled local Degrees >1 st Deg. June 18 Council PM >2 nd Deg. June 18 Council PM >3 rd Degree Fall time frame Sept/Oct >4 th Degree Tampa June 1 Westshore Marriott Promote attendance at Degrees by members! Every time a Knight attends a Degree, he learns something new about the Order! APRIL THIRD DEGREE SK Gene Dolecki receiving the plaque as the Honoree for the Third Degree from Conferring Officer Bob Marrah A Third Degree Exemplification was conducted on April 27 hosted by St. Patrick s Council # The honoree for that degree was the State Council Public Relations Director for the Diocese of Venice, Gene Dolecki. Gene serves as the Program Director for the Bishop s Annual Veteran s Day Mass at Sarasota National Cemetery. He was recognized: For his tireless work-ethic, commitment and dedication to the Order, we are proud to honor Sir Knight Eugene Dolecki as the Honoree for this Exemplification of the Third Degree! Council Recognition At the May Council Business meetings: Council #13307 K of M >Charles Consolvo F of M >Bob and Maureen Marrah Newly Elected Grand Knights: Council #7826: Bob Haas Council #14845: Dale Scully Kentucky Derby Party St. Patrick s Council held a Kentucky Derby Pot-luck party for its members and wives on Saturday, May 4. All the Attendees watched the race on the big screen and were able to cheer on their favorite horse and rider. Ladies were asked to wear an appropriate chapeaux for the event; men were required to wear argyle socks. After the race, the many offerings of dinner and desserts were displayed for all to partake. Maureen Marrah, Diane Kosey and her daughter Laurel in their finery! After the meal, a Kentucky Derby Trivia quiz was held to determine who knew most about this annual derby. 3
Tonya McDonald, a Kentucky native, the trivia mistress of ceremonies! Rev. Emil J. Kapaun, Capt. USA -- Father Kapaun was recently awarded the Medal of Honor for his deeds 62 years ago while a P.O.W. in Korea. Mark McDonald, the other Kentucky native, in his attire. The pastor, Fr. Robert, seen behind Mark, was cited for failure to wear argyle. I urge all to Google Fr. Kapaun and read about the phenomenal deeds he performed for his fellow prisoners. He and many other prisoners died while in captivity. Farther Kapaun has a local connection. The founding DGK of St. Patrick s Council, Ozro Barclay, who also served as that Council s second GK, was a roommate of Fr. Kapaun while both attended Officer Candidate training at Ft. Bliss, Texas in 1947! Brother Oz had a 30 year military career retiring as a Colonel & has now moved to Arkansas. THE ROSARY Last month, these pages noted that the Rosary was being said by all before the monthly Business Meeting of Blessed Carlos Manuel Council #14391 and encouraged all Councils to follow suit. 4
Members from St. Patrick s Council are seen presenting a check to Oak Park School Asst. Principal Phyllis Frederic from Tootsie Roll Proceeds. On Friday, May 10, seen above L-R, DGK Wayne Brewer, FS Tom Latronica Bob Marrah, Bob Scully, GK Joe Reardon and Treas. Ken Widmaier gave the proceeds from the Council s Citizens with Disabilities Drive to Oak Park School for their outstanding work with children with various disabilities. CONGRATULATIONS! Go to the new Sir Knights who were exemplified on June 1 at the Tampa Westshore Marriott Hotel. They now are the newest members of Our Lady of Charity Assembly #3089! >Sir Knight Scott D. Anthofer >Sir Knight Michael T. Foley >Sir Knight Richard Hallock >Sir Knight Benjamin R. Hunter >Sir Knight Kenneth J. Widmaier Indigent Veteran Funeral Report May Funeral May 29 th, 2013: >Ralph Conner, SP4, USA, Cold War Flag folding at funerals Many of us have seen a flag folded at the funeral of a veteran. It is a precise process and is always followed exactly. The ceremony is highly symbolized and has meaning. This is a process reserved only for the American flag: >The first fold of our flag is a symbol of life. >The second fold is for our belief in the eternal life. >The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veteran departing our ranks who gave a portion of life for the defense of our country. >The fourth fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in times of war for His divine guidance. >The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, "Our country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country, right or wrong." >The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >The seventh fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic. >The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered in to the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor mother, for whom it flies on mother's day. 5
>The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood; for it is through their faith, love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great have been molded. >The tenth fold is a tribute to father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since they were first born. >The eleventh fold, in the eyes of a Hebrew citizen, represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon, and glorifies, in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. >The twelfth fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, God the Father, the Son, and Holy Ghost. When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost, reminding us of our national motto, "In God we Trust." incoming Faithful Navigator for the Assembly for the Fraternal Year He will assume office July 1 st. Mother s day Following a tradition started ten years ago, St. Patrick s Council members hand out long stemmed carnations to all Mothers who attend Sat/Sun Masses at St. Patrick s on Mother s Day weekend. The flowers are well received and many a thank you to the Council Brothers. After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington and the sailors and marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for us the rights, privileges, and freedoms we enjoy today. >1000 distributed! In Memoriam New Faithful Navigator elected for Our Lady of Charity Assembly #3089. FN Ron Kosey is seen symbolically handing the gavel to Gene Dolecki. According to the Assembly s By-Laws, a new election is held every May. On Monday, May 13, Faithful Captain Eugene Dolecki was elected as the 6 Sir Knight Wayne Becker Wayne Becker, a founding member of St. Patrick s Council #13307 and a long ago occupant of Boys Town, Nebraska was called home to the Lord May 10 th.
