The remainder of our fraternal year will be very busy with golf tournament fundraisers, a St Pat s Party, St Agatha s- Easter donation, basketball free-throw, Felice Cuores, essay contests and many other activities concluding with the election of officers in May and the Installation Mass/Banquet in June. Kudos to Brother Brian Fenili, our January Knight of the Month and special recognition to Brothers Copeland and Marshall for their continued and valuable financial service. For all of our Admissions Degree (1st) brothers, a 2nd and 3rd degree program will be held on Sunday, February 11 at 1 PM at Council # 2951 Florissant. Please contact Brother Bill Klein or myself for further information. Thanks to Brother Ron Meier for arranging the 5th Sunday Mass participation on Dec 31st. Next 5th Sunday will be April 29th Thanks also to these brothers who assisted at the 2nd and 3rd degree programs on Sunday January 14th at Incarnate Word. Please be sure to fill out and return the Survey of Fraternal Activities that was sent to you in December. The summary of these must be forwarded by late January. Dues assessments were sent to you in December. Please pay these promptly and get involved with your council s activities: Church; Culture of Life; Community, Family; Youth or Council. There is plenty of room here for participation by all. Let s not forget our Thursday morning commitment (from in the Little Church) for Adoration of the Holy Eucharist. Please be sure to sign in at the back of the church. Attached for your information is your latest Council Organization Chart Council Chaplain Fr Michael Lampe The Mass and Holy Communion - The Mass is the re-presentation of the Sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the Cross in an un- bloody manner. The Mass is the same Sacrifice made on Calvary. At the Consecration, the bread and wine become the true Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ so that Jesus Christ Himself can be offered to the Father. So, it is the same Jesus Christ that is offered as the victim. The offering is by the ministerial priest who is configured to Jesus Christ through the sacrament of Holy Orders, so much so, that it is Jesus Christ who is acting through the priest to offer the Sacrifice. The words of Consecration are said by the priest such that the sacrifice is mystically re-presented in the separate consecrations of the bread and wine into the true Body and Blood of Christ. So, we also have the death of Christ sacramentally present, since on the Cross His Body and Blood were separated. The Sacrifice is completed when the priest consumes the Body and Blood of Christ at the altar. The offering of the Mass imparts grace to those who participate in its celebration, who join themselves with the priest in offering the Holy Sacrifice and offer themselves along with it. We come to Mass to worship God by offering the Sacrifice, and this is the basis for the obligation to participate at Mass every Sunday rather than to receive our Lord during Holy Communion. Although we are not obliged to receive every Sunday, we are highly encouraged if we are properly prepared. The USCCB provides guidelines for receiving communion which include, A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession. More information about communion can be found on the USCCB website: Culture of Life Ted Naegel January 28: Midwest March for Life in Jefferson City, MO. January 30: Core Team planning meeting in the Parish Hall for the March 21 Ascension Day of Prayer at Planned Parent on Forest Park Blvd.

The Knight Times, January 2018, Page 2 of 6 Knighting Degree: Joe Klug, John Schmidt & Leo Seiler Membership Bill Klein A Formation (2nd) & Knighting (3rd) Degree Exemplification was held at Incarnate Word Council #9981, on Sunday, January 14, There were (40) Candidates who received their Knighting Degree. Ascension Council was honored to have Joe Klug, John Schmidt & Leo Seiler, become our newest Third Degree Knights! The afternoon was a very memorable experience for all! If you haven t witnessed these Degree Ceremonies, please try to attend the next time you will be glad you did! Please congratulate Joe, John & Leo at the next meeting! Third Degree Knights! Please consider advancing to the Fourth and highest Degree of Patriotism. It will be held on March 3, 2018 at the Hilton Airport Inn. We need to know as soon as possible, so we can make arrangements for your attendance. The Missouri State website - has information on the event. You can also contact me for more details. Brother Knights! Please wear your name badges to Church (& to Council activities). We are proud of what we stand for and what we accomplish! After Mass, please turn to a man near you and ask Has anyone asked you about joining the Knights of Columbus? You may be surprised; no one has asked them before!! For membership, degrees, or, event information please contact Bill Klein, , or membership@ascensionkofc.org Community Don Durand Felice Cuores - Saturday night, January 13th, was a cold one, but did not diminish attendance at the Welcome the New Year dance where 194 very active guests came and enjoyed the evening. Volunteers totaled 41, but included only a disappointing 4 from Ascension, the lowest in several years (11 had signed up). Next month's Valentine theme dance will take place on a very unusual fourth Saturday, February 24. This was the only Saturday in February available. As usual, volunteer signups for the February 24 and March 10 dances will take place at our January 23 Council and Auxiliary meetings. Church -Ken Colombini\Charlie Wunderlich Monthly Rosary: Our monthly Rosary for unborn resumes prior to the council meeting in January. We meet at 7 p.m. in the Little Church. Please let us know if you would like to lead the Rosary in Eucharistic Adoration: The Knights have committed to providing two people at adoration from 9 to 10 a.m. each Thursday. Please check your schedule to see if you can give Jesus One Special Hour a Week. The Knights have committed to have at least 2 people for devotion to the Blessed Sacrament every Thursday during this hour, in the Little Church. Thanks to all who have committed an hour to our Lord, I m sure you found it very peaceful and satisfying. Please sign in at the back of church as K of C when you visit during our hour! Catechism Class: On select Tuesdays over the next two years, Fr. Lampe and Fr. Molini will walk through the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Their intention is to take their time reviewing the teachings of the Church and hopefully help develop a deeper understanding among our parishioners. You are invited to attend all or any of the sessions as your schedule allows. There will have an afternoon session as well as an evening session on each section of the Catechism, at 1 pm in the Parish Hall and at 7 pm in the MPR Annex. If you have a catechism, bring it along; copies for purchase will be available. Check the bulletin for session dates. Catholic Men for Christ Conference: The Archdiocese s Catholic Men for Christ Conference takes place Saturday, February 3, and promises a day of great speakers and powerful inspiration. Details: Men s Groups: The Thursday Morning Men's Group meets year-round at 7 am in the Parish Hall. The Men's Awakening Group meets most Saturdays at 6:30 am and conclude by 8 am so that they can attend the morning Mass offered for the day. Bereavement Program: Please contact Rich Kastel if you experience the death of an immediate family member at richkastel@gmail.com or (314) As always, please make sure to read the Sunday bulletin for more opportunities to grow in your faith.

Council Brian Fenili The Knight Times, January 2018, Page 3 of 6 The Holidays are over and hopefully your New Year s hangover has passed. You ve already broken several of your New Year s resolutions so there s not much left to do! That is of course unless you re a Knight of Columbus! The real fun is just beginning! We have several big events coming in the next few months. Sunday Breakfast, The St. Patrick s Day dinner, BINGO and of course, our Golf Tournament. Our next Sunday breakfast is Sunday February 18th and our partner sponsor is St. Vincent DePaul. A breakfast of pancakes and sausage will be served after the 8:00, 9:15 & 10:45 masses. Coffee, juice & milk will also be available. We will have a St. Valentine s Day theme so bring your Sweetheart and have a great time. There will be games and possible other surprises. Contact Al Tornabeni or Ramiro Benitez if you wish to volunteer. Not too far off is the Breakfast Easter Egg hunt. Saturday March 17th, we will be holding our annual St. Patrick s Day dinner. Last year was a wonderful event with a packed house. We had an awesome live Irish / Keltic band, who will be returning. Enjoy a wonderful corned beef and cabbage dinner and we guarantee the bar will be well stocked. Please contact Ron Meier or Roy Avery to either reserve your place or volunteer to help. We are always looking for a few good bartenders. I am sure St. Patrick himself will be there (in some form). Of course, mark your calendars for the 17th Annual Knight s Golf Tournament to be held, at the Landings Golf Club, on Monday, May 21th. The committee is in place and we are always looking for volunteers to help the day of the tournament. Keep an eye out for volunteer opportunities in the coming weeks / months. If you are interested in participating in any capacity, please contact Brian Bfenili@ameritech.net or at (314) BINGO is on the horizon. The exact date is to be determined. It will either be late April or mid-may. Let s also not forget those men and women who are overseas protecting our freedom. If you know of any member of our parish serving our country make sure to let Brother Steve Lewis know about them so we can include them in our Adopt-a-Platoon program! Family Ron Meier Family of the Month: As you know, I am always looking for Family of the Month Candidates and if anyone in the Council knows or would like to nominate a worthy couple, please contact me. Special Raffle: At our Council Meeting on Tuesday November 28th, we once again had our Special drawing with #4 being drawn belonging to Hans Angermann. With Hans not present, the pot will continue to grow reaching over $ going into the New Year So as the pot continues to grow, keep in mind you must be present to WIN and have purchased a ticket. Good Luck to Everyone. 5th Sunday Mass: On Sunday December 31st, we once again celebrated another 5th Sunday. With the Holiday spirit still in full swing and the temperature being 3 Degrees above Zero, we had a small hand full of people that attended the 8:00am Mass as a Council. Instead of going out to breakfast many of the Knights & Ladies help distribute the book, The Family Fully Alive to all parishioners as they left mass and wished our fellow parishioners a Happy New Year. Easter Bunny Coming - March 18 th : Please mark your calendar for Sunday March 18th when the Easter Bunny comes to the MPR and visits the children of the Parish. Please watch for more updates to follow.

The Knight Times, January 2018, Page 4 of 6 St. Louis Assembly 4th Degree Jerry Lamoureux Happy New Year! It s time to encourage all 3Rd Degree Brothers to attend the Patriotic 4th Degree. The next Fourth Degree Exemplification in St. Louis will be on Saturday March 3, 2018 at the St. Louis Airport Hilton. There will be a Ladies Luncheon during the Knight s Exemplification. See the information on the hotel and the banquet registration form included with this Edition of TKT on the March 3rd Exemplification. Our Membership, Bill Klein will be assisting candidates with completing their Form 4 application and registration form. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Bill Klein at or bklein@theauthoritygroup.com This is the best year for a man to take the Fourth Degree, because: This is the last year, probably, that the Exemplification will be held at a hotel, at the Airport Hilton on March 3. The Kansas City s exemplification moved to a parish or school several years ago, due to the cost of a hotel, and we ve already explored options for next year. Meanwhile, this is the first year that candidates will not need to wear or rent a tuxedo for the Exemplification. Candidates only need wear a dark suit, white shirt and a tie. Members are still welcomed to wear their tuxedos and baldrics. Finally, while the sunset of the regalia has been extended to June 30, 2019, this is at least one of the last opportunities for candidates to take the degree surrounded by Brother Sir Knights in the regalia. Our assigned Assembly, Holy Spirit # 3588 will be the host Assembly and has begun recruiting for the March 3rd Exemplification. Current Sir Knights, let s support our Brother Knights and attend the Exemplification, Mass and Banquet. Our wives are encouraged to attend the Ladies Luncheon, Mass and Banquet. The St. Louis Assembly s annual Christmas party on December 9, 2017 at St. Joseph in Clayton was a huge success. 46 attended, and the Mass and dinner organized by past Executive Officer Jonathan Klimpel were wonderful. Our new Commander Mark Westhoff received the purple from outgoing Commander and still-assembly Scribe and DD SK Joe Miller. We are still looking for an Executive Officer to help our Commander Mark Westhoff. At our January 10th, meeting, we were able to exemplify the Renewal of Obligations, a Supreme-printed ceremonial, which is nonetheless unfamiliar to our area. Many of us were able to renew our commitments as Sir Knights. It was awesome. Our February meeting is Wednesday, February 14th, at 7:30 p.m., at Seven Holy Founders in Affton. All Sir Knights are invited to attend our meetings. If you have any questions on the St. Louis Assembly #565 Fourth Degree or the Honor Guard, don t hesitate to call or Gerard.lamoureux@ascensionkofc.org Holy Spirit Assembly 4th Degree Joe Burleski Greetings and Happy New Year from your Holy Spirit 4th Degree Assembly! Our next monthly Assembly meeting will be on Wednesday, January 24, at Incarnate Word (cafeteria) located at Olive Blvd in Chesterfield. The meeting will begin promptly at 7:00pm. Join us for fellowship & refreshments beginning at 6:15pm. These same times are also for our next 3 monthly Assembly meetings: February 28 at Incarnate Word, March 28 and April 25 at our own Ascension Parish (Multi-Purpose Room). We are now just a little more than a month away from the annual Greater St Louis Area 4th Degree Exemplification. This year s event will be held on Saturday, March 3, at the St Louis Lambert Airport Hilton. For the first time ever our Holy Spirit Assembly is honored to serve as the host Assembly for this very special all-day event. We respectfully ask all current 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Degree KofC members to strongly consider attaining their 4th degree thus sealing their membership in the Knights of Columbus. We ask all current 4th Degree members to actively help recruit new 4th Degree members. Have questions? Our Missouri State KofC website, has all the information for this event. Bill Klein, Ascension Council Membership, is our contact for further information and completing the necessary paperwork. Bill can be reached via cell phone or Bklein@theauthoritygroup.com In recognition of the upcoming th Degree Exemplification on March 3, I wanted to share the thoughts of our Assembly leader, Faithful Navigator Dave Goetz. His letter follows directly below. On behalf of our Holy Spirit 4th Degree Assembly we wish you and yours health, happiness, and success this new year!

The Knight Times, January 2018, Page 5 of 6 Holy Spirit Faithful Navigator - Dave Goetz Brother Knights and Ladies, This time of year, has always been a time for looking back on the past year, and more importantly, forward to the coming year. It's a time to reflect on the changes we want (or need) to make and to resolve to follow through on those changes. In my reflections on the year just ended, the news was consumed by a world struggling with ongoing terrorism, religious persecution, and political chaos. On the opposite side of the spectrum, I saw through the Knights and our Parish communities a tremendous outpouring of support, both physically and financially, to serve those less fortunate, to protect those who cannot protect themselves, and to evangelize to those who are in need of God s grace. Looking forward, it is the ideal time to reflect on where we are with our relationship with God, our families, with our careers, and with the time we give to help those in need. I am reminded of what I call the 20-5 talk I heard again recently. It goes like this: Suppose you woke up tomorrow and received two phone calls. The first phone call tells you that you have inherited $20 million, no strings attached. The second tells you that you have an incurable and terminal disease, and you have no more than 5 years to live. What would you do differently, and, in particular, what would you stop/start doing? The focus is on how we allocate the most precious of all resources: Time. As we look to the New Year, let us strive to give of the time we have so that we can be counted as one of God s good and faithful servants. We are busy planning to do just that as an Assembly and we need your help. We have plans to support the VA, USO, continue our Assembly choir, etc. If you are not already part of the 4th degree, would you consider giving a small amount of your time to become a Brother Sir Knight and join our patriotic activities. If you are already a Brother Sir Knight, would you please give some of your time, talent, and treasure to those who have and are currently serving our country? I look forward to the coming year. It promises to be busy and extremely rewarding to those who get involved. I wish all of you the best in the New Year and I look forward to seeing each of you as we support the core principles of the Knights charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you," says the LORD. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. Fraternally yours, David Goetz Faithful Navigator Blessed Father Solanus Casey An excerpt from Columbia Online Edition - CAPUCHIN FRANCISCAN FATHER SOLANUS CASEY WAS A HUMBLE FRIAR WHOSE WITNESS OF FAITH DREW THOUSANDS TO CHRIST Like a leper coming to Jesus for healing, a woman with an incurable skin disease knelt in prayer before the tomb at Detroit s St. Bonaventure Monastery in She never knew anything about Father Solanus until she was here in Detroit, said Msgr. Ronald Browne, archdiocesan delegate for the canonization cause of Franciscan Father Solanus Casey ( ), a Capuchin friar who spent a large part of his ministry as the doorkeeper of St. Bonaventure. A Capuchin friend was showing her the tomb and explaining that he was a very holy man, Msgr. Browne explained. She was at the tomb praying for her family, and when she finished, she heard a voice say to her: Well, what about yourself? What do you need? The next thing she knew, she was feeling warmth on her leg where her skin disease was very prominent. She rolled up her slacks and looked down, and the skin disease was crumbling off.

The Knight Times, January 2018, Page 6 of 6 The woman s instant, visible healing later confirmed by medical doctors in her home country, in Detroit and in Rome as without scientific explanation became the miracle needed for Pope Francis to officially declare the friar blessed. Ascension Council # Santa Maria Drive Chesterfield, MO To Detroiters, such a healing is just another entry in the long-running list of extraordinary favors attributed to the holy Capuchin s intercession during and after his lifetime. Devotion to Father Solanus is particularly strong among Knights of Columbus councils and assemblies that bear his name, as well as many other Knights who will join the tens of thousands who are expected to pack Ford Field for the beatification Mass in Detroit Nov. 18.
