Thanks to State Deputy Joe Rosenthal for his attendance and very worthwhile comments. Joe has promised to attend our 2018 Officer Installation Banquet as well. Special congratulations are in order to Brother Al Tornabeni for being named Knight of the Year, very well deserved. July was a bit more subdued as we geared up for our annual men s smoker/bbq/recruitment effort. Recruiting results from the BBQ are again over the top with three candidates ready for their Admissions Degree to be held here on August 21st (Joe Helmuth, Matt Kallal & Chris Becklandburg). Additionally, Father Walter Muna, of Uganda, will also be taking his Admissions Degree prior to his returning to his home country and establishing a Council there. Kudos to Brothers Bill Klein and Al Tornabeni for again managing a great fraternal and social gathering with close to 100 participants. Congratulations to our Worthy District Deputy Sir Knight Jerry Lamoureux for being named in July the State District Deputy of the Year. Well done Jerry. Thanks to brother Pete Bruggeman for again chairing the Blood Drive held on August 20th. We were saddened to see the departure of Father Michael Grosch as our Chaplain as he was reassigned to St Michael the Archangel s parish as their new pastor. We wish him well in this new assignment. His replacement, as our new Chaplain, is Sir Knight Father Michael Lampe, recently ordained and ready for God s business. We all look forward to a close relationship with Father Lampe as he is currently transferring to and the Spirit Assembly. Father Molini and the Ascension Parish School were very appreciative of the June $5,000 donation to the Ascending Angels program. As you will recall, the amount of this donation will be voted on by the full council in May of each year and; providing funds are available, up to $5,000 will be made available for this tuition-assist program. A new Papal Flag was purchased for the main church and is displayed in the back by the statue of Mary next to the American Flag donated by the Knights several years ago. Kudos to Brother Mike Pfeifer for standing up as the new chair of the DD Drive. Mike will be working closely with Mike Nugent, the outgoing DD Drive chair, this year. Thanks Mike. (Mike continues to be a popular name) Our current Admissions Degree Team has been in place for ~ 5 years and has provided the conduit for entry into our fraternal organization for many of our brother knights at this council as well as other councils in the area. We are losing many of those currently involved with the Degree Team and are hoping that we will have 7-8 knights step up for this important function. The Degree Team meets 2-3 times each fraternal year for 1-1/2 to 2 hours so it is not a heavy time requirement. Please contact Bill Klein, Alan Politte or me if you would care to assist. We also have a new Church Director-Ken Columbini. Thank you Ken for stepping up to this important directorship. As a reminder, Father Rich outlined a program and spoke at our May Council meeting that will be initiated in September involving Living our Strengths. This is all about finding our personal (and fraternal) inner strengths; the development of which has led to some amazing results. I believe the cost for this will be $20 to cover the cost of materials. Watch the bulletin for further information. Don t forget that our 3rd Sunday breakfast comes up on September 17th and Bingo is coming up on September 23rd. In Brotherhood, Vivat Jesus Mike Berg, Grand Knight

2 Membership Director Bill Klein The Knight Times, August 2017, Page 2 of 5 Thanks to Al Tornabeni & all our Brothers who worked so hard to make the 5th Annual Smoker BBQ, on Tuesday July 25th, a huge success! As a result of the evening, we now have (3) new Candidates wishing to join our Ascension Council! They received their Admission Degree, (1st) on Monday, August 21 at 7:00 PM, in the Parish Hall. It is a rewarding experience for both the Candidates and the Brothers who come as witnesses. Please remember we all have the responsibility to help grow our membership. Without our Council s continued growth, we will not be able to support all our worthwhile charitable endeavors. Please let us know what we can do to assist your recruiting efforts. Please let us know what we can do to assist your recruiting efforts. For membership, degrees, or, event information please contact Bill Klein, , or membership@ascensionkofc.org Community Director Don Durand Felice Cuores: Summer break is over. Our 15th season will begin on Saturday, September 9 as we welcome back our developmentally and physically disabled adults age 18 and over to our dance parties. These parties are hosted by volunteers from the seven KofC West County Councils and Auxiliaries which are held in the St Clare of Assisi Parish School Cafeteria from 7 to 10 PM. Volunteer duties include set-up, registration, refreshment distribution, door and restroom monitoring, clean-up. The work load is light and the experience is very rewarding. Ascension volunteers for the September 9 and October 14 parties will be sought at the August 22 Council and Auxiliary meetings. See the full season schedule attachment elsewhere in the newsletter. Contact Bill or Jan Lukas at or william.lukas@ascensionkofc.org for more information or to volunteer. Council Chaplain Fr Michael Lampe Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Fr. Michael Lampe and I am the fourth of nine children. My home parish is Epiphany of Our Lord and I went to Bishop DuBourg High School. I went to college and for a B. S. and a M. S. in Nuclear Engineering. Then, I worked for a few years in the nuclear industry for a small consulting company in Illinois. It was there that it became clear that God wanted me to become a priest. Although it was challenging to end the career I had started, I quit my job and returned to St. Louis to enter the seminary. I was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of St. Louis on May 27, Ascension is my first assignment as a priest, and I started on June 27, I feel welcomed and appreciated here and I look forward to serving our parish well. The Knights of Columbus have played a role in helping me along the way toward priesthood. I joined the Knights of Columbus in 2005 while I was in college at Rolla and it led to a devotion to the Rosary, which I am sure helped me in my discernment to the priesthood. While I was working as an engineer in Illinois, I was an active member of a local council and it helped me become a better man. I served that council as the Lecturer and a First-Degree Team Member. I also assisted with the parish picnic, the Toostie Roll Drive, Fish Fries and many other activities in that council. As a seminarian, the Knights of Columbus from multiple councils provided me with additional funds to help cover expenses. For these reasons and more I am grateful for the Knights of Columbus. I was a member of 4 different councils prior to coming to Ascension. Some of them were better than others. I think the diversity of experiences I had with these other councils can help me better serve the Knight of Columbus here at Ascension as your Chaplain Culture of Life Ted Naegel Silver Rose Prayer Service on Tuesday, September 12, at 7:00 pm in the Little Church, followed by a root beer float social with family pictures with the Silver Rose in the Parish Hall. For the Good of the Order Thomas Gates Our guest speaker for the September council meeting needs no introduction. It will be our former assistant pastor and brother Knight, Father Mathew Cheruparambil. Father is currently serving as assistant pastor of St. Joseph's Church in Ballwin. He recently wrote a book which he will discuss at our meeting. We look forward to seeing and hearing from Father again!

As we all know the Church has an urgent need for priests and consecrated religious women and men and we must give special priority in our daily prayers and actions to promoting these vocations. As the largest Catholic lay organization in the world, the Knights must continue to assist the Church with financial and moral assistance to promote vocations! GOD INVITES VOCATIONS, BUT EACH OF US MUST HELP CLOSE THE DEAL!! Family Director Ron Meier Family of the Month - If anyone in our Council knows of a Family worthy of being nominated as Family of the Month, please let me know. I would surely like to hear from you. Just send me an or let me know verbally. Special As of last year, we have accumulated $ in our Special Drawing Jackpot, and it s just sitting there itching to be won. So hopefully you will make it to next Council Meeting on August 22nd and increase your chances to win. Remember, you MUST buy a ticket at the door to be eligible for the Special drawing. Thanks and Good Luck to All Family Week Update: As you know, the KofC Family week was August 7th thru August 13th. We as a Council celebrated Fr. McGivney s Birthday on Saturday August 12th with inviting the Council to attend 8:00am Mass that day and extending the invitation to all to go out to breakfast at the Hilton Garden Inn in Chesterfield Valley immediately following mass. It was projected that approx 25 individuals (Knights & Spouses) attended the mass even though the church was fairly full with the normal 8:00am mass goers there as well. Then 15 individuals attended a buffet breakfast at the Hilton Garden Inn. A lot of good camaraderie was share by all. For good measures, there was even a Fr. McGivney quiz for those who wanted to play with the winner receiving 2 Tickets to Wehrenberg Theaters. The winners were Bill & Barbara Klein. Congrats to them both. Upcoming Calendar of Events: Saturday September 30th. 4 Council Director Brian Fenili The Knight Times, August 2017, Page 4 of 5 Summer is starting to wind down which means our K of C season will start warming up. On July 27 we held our annual Men s BBQ / Smoker. It was great to see such a large crowd. We had between Knights, and guests, which included our 2 Reverend Fathers. Hopefully everyone had a chance to say hello to Reverend Father Michael Lampe. I would like to thank Al Tornabeni for organizing the event and we would like to thank the many volunteers who cooked and served our guests. The event was a great success. The golf tournament was delayed, due to Mother Nature, but even she could not match the good Lord, who gifted us with a great day on June 1. The weather held out and the event was a huge success. We exceeded our 2016 revenue number and plan to visit our two charities, by the months end, with their donation gift. It is always fun to present the checks to the worthy charities. We did a few things different at this year s tournament. We had a booth set up with the 2 charities present. The charity volunteers gave us great feedback from the visits. We also changed dinner to a sit down dinner and the feedback was very positive. We look to make more enhancements for 2018, which will be held at the Landings Golf Course, on Monday, May 21. MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW! Thank you to ALL of the volunteers (both men and women) who made this tournament possible. Please consider offering time in 2018 to lend a hand. On September 17th we resume our Sunday Parish breakfasts in the Multi-Purpose room. We hope to see you there, before or after mass. Come spend some time with your brother Knights or just give Ramiro a hard time. Donuts and Bagels will be served before and after 8:00, 9:15 & 10:45 masses. BINGO!!! Yes it s BINGO time again. Bingo will be September 23rd in the MPR. Please contact Gerard Marshall or Paul Muzik. MPR seating opens immediately after 5:00 mass. Finally, let s not forget those men and women who are overseas protecting our freedom. If you know of any member of our parish serving our country please let Brother Steve Lewis know so they may be included in our Adopt a Platoon program! St. Louis Assembly 4th Degree Jerry Lamoureux Since we did not have a July TKT, I am including a summary of the items we were involved with since the June report. A State Council Regional Pilgrimage was held at St. Monica s on June 11th with a large Honor Guard turn out and an Honor Guard Prayer service was held that evening for SK Paul Koenig at Schrader s Funeral Home. Ascension had a Corpus Christi Procession on Sunday June 18, 2017 following the 5:30 p.m. Mass. Our outgoing Chaplain, Fr. Grosch participated as one of his last duties before his transfer and our Pastor Fr. Molini was the Mass Celebrant. Honor Guard was part of the Mass and Procession. The Honor Guard participated in a memorial Mass for SK Charles Prather at Ascension on Friday June 23rd. The Honor Guard was part of a Chalice Presentation at Ascension s 10:45 a.m. Mass on Sunday July 16th for SK Don Bartling. Many of us attended the Supreme Convention, in St. Louis at the Convention Center downtown, July 29th - August 3rd. Our Master, Past State Deputy John Appelbaum, is the lead organizer, and there were many, many other Sir Knights from the Assembly involved. Honor Guard was well represented the entire week. The opening Mass on August 1 was amazing. It was an honor for me to attend this huge event. On August 1st, as part of his annual report, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson announced the transition from our traditional regalia, the tuxedo, cape, chapeau and sword, to completely new regalia consisting of a sports coat, grey slacks, tie, and beret. The new regalia does not have a sword. The change to the new regalia was made with the approval of the Supreme Board of Directors. The Vice Supreme Masters modeled the new regalia; Masters were being fitted for it at the meeting, and will be wearing it very soon. The Supreme Knight indicated vaguely that there would be some allowance for limited use of the deprecated regalia, but no parameters were given. The Master has been invited to our next meeting to share what he knows. Our August meeting is Wednesday, August 9th, at 7:30 pm, at Seven Holy Founders and the September meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 13, If you have any questions on the St. Louis Assembly Fourth Degree or the Honor Guard, don t hesitate to call or Gerard.lamoureux@ascensionkofc.org

9 One Life, One Rose Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose One Life, One Rose The Knights of Columbus Ascension Council will participate in a North American effort paying special tribute to Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas through the Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose One, Life, One Rose Program. It involves carrying six Silver Roses from Ontario through the U.S. to Monterrey, Mexico. The Our Lady of Guadalupe Silver Rose Program began in 1960 as a project of the Columbian Squires of North America to honor the Blessed Virgin under her title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas. The program has continued since then as a project of Squires circles, councils and Fourth Degree assemblies in several jurisdictions. In 2001, Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson expanded the program by beginning the Running of the Rose from the 119 th Annual Meeting of the Supreme Council in Ontario. Today six Silver Roses travel from Canada to the United States to Monterrey, Mexico, arriving at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe there on December 12, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In earlier years the one rose was run from London, Ontario, through 10 states in the United States, and then crossing at the International Bridge and ending in Monterrey, Mexico. Now six roses travel simultaneously. Starting April 2014, six roses will travel simultaneously through 53 states and provinces before entering Mexico for the final leg of the pilgrimage to Monterrey. The Running of the Rose is a perfect program for the Knights of Columbus, said Supreme Knight Anderson. Through it we honor not only Our Lady of Guadalupe and express the unity of the Order, but we also reaffirm the Order s dedication to the sanctity of human life. It is to the Blessed Mother that we turn in prayer as we work to end the Culture of Death that grips our society. As we think in terms of One Life, One Rose, it is most appropriate that we turn to Our Lady of Guadalupe who made known her will through Juan Diego and the Miracle of the Roses. One of the Roses will journey through Missouri and arrive at Ascension on September 12, 2017 for a Silver Rose Prayer Service. Join us in praying to Our Lady to strengthen efforts to restore the culture of life in our society. Mark your calendars for our prayer service: Where: Ascension Little Church Day: Tuesday September12, 2017 Time: 7:00 p.m. Project Contact: Ted Naegel:
