1 The Knight Times A monthly newsletter published for the members of Ascension Council #11139 March 2019 Chaplain Rev. Michael Lampe Grand Knight Alan Politte D.G Knight & Program Dir Ken Colombini Financial Secretary Dave Copeland Chancellor Bob Bulthaus Recorder Paul Muzik Treasurer Gerard Marshall Advocate Bill Lukas Warden Cliff Weeks Inside Guard Tim Ferguson Outside Guard Paul Blase Year Trustee Mike Berg Year Trustee Ron Meier Year Trustee Mel Trotier Lecturer Tom Gates Membership Director Tim Lewis District Deputy Jerry Lamoureux Grand Knight s Message Alan Politte The Patriotic Degree Congratulations to our newest 4th Degree brothers; Rich Kastel, Phillip Wright and Tim Price, who were Knighted on Saturday March 2nd. Congratulations to Tim Lewis who shepherded those men down the path to 4th Degree. The Faithful Navigator/Ascension Council member, Joe Burleski, explained the 4th Degree and the purpose of Assemblies at the February Council meeting. He also provided handouts with more details. The 4th Degree was established on February 22, 1900 at the New York Convention. The purpose of the Patriotic Degree is to: To promote and strengthen the patriotic spirit of the civic community. To educate its members, and others, both in the teachings of Holy Mother Church, and the history of our nation. To promote by example the highest type of citizenship so necessary for the perseveration of our democratic government. To oppose dissemination and spread of doctrine dangerous to our form of government, and to the Divine law of faith and morality. To support by word and deed, the duly constituted authorities of local, state and national government, and to recognize excellence in public life. The four pillars of the Knights of Columbus are Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. Mount your steed; raise your lance be a Knight/Patriot for God and Country Church Director - Steve Brown Eucharistic Adoration: The Blessed Sacrament is exposed for adoration from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every Thursday in the Little Church. Please check your schedule to see if you can give Jesus one special hour each week. Thanks to all who have committed an hour to our Lord; we re sure you found it very peaceful and satisfying. Please sign in at the back of church with your name and (K of C) when you visit! Men s Groups: The Thursday Morning Men's Group meets year-round at 7 am in the Parish Hall. The Men's Awakening Group meets most Saturdays at 6:30 am and concludes by 8 am so that they can attend the morning Mass offered for the day. Bereavement Program: Please contact Rich Kastel if you experience the death of an immediate family member, at Richard.Kastel@ascensionkofc.org or (314) Pray for Vocations: Founded by a parish priest, the Knights of Columbus have always worked hard to encourage young men and women to consider God s call to service in the priesthood or religious life. At Ascension, one way to do this is by having parish families, couples or individuals volunteer to take home the vocation chalice for a week of special prayer for vocations. If you d like to participate, please contact Michelle Ackerman ( ) or Emma Ackerman (eackerman99@gmail.com) Day of Recollection: The Seminarian Knights of Columbus Council invites all local Knights to visit Kenrick-Glennon Seminary for a day of reflection and prayer. The day will include Mass, adoration, talks, prayer, lunch, and fraternity! There is no cost, but free will offerings will be accepted! Any questions? Contact Bobby Tull at roberttull@kenrick.edu. Please consider attending the Ascension Parish Mission April 8-11, 7 p.m. in the Main Church at Ascension led by Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers. Invite your friends and loved ones. As always, make sure to read the Sunday Bulletin for more opportunities to grow in your faith.

2 Membership Director Tim Lewis The Knight Times, March 2019, Page 2 of 6 As a Council, we need to continually focus on adding new members. This is the lifeblood to our continuing vitality and success... allowing us to do what we do in supporting our Parish and community. The world needs Catholic men to step up and live out their faith. The Knights do that and much more! Encourage a fellow parishioner, friend, or neighbor to consider joining the Knights. You will have many opportunities to engage the at upcoming events including Easter breakfast April 7th, Pasta dinner April 12th, Bingo April l27th, or our golf outing May 6th. We will have an Admissions degree at Ascension in our Parish hall May 16th at 6:30 pm. Let us all make sure we have new members for our admission at that time. Our Four Primary Principles * Charity- 1st degree Admission degree May 16 th Ascension Council * Unity- 2nd degree Formation degree- May 18 th St. Clair Parish Council 4667 * Fraternity 3rd degree Knighthood degree * Patriotism 4th degree Patriotism degree April 13th Kansas City Mo. Congratulations to our recent three 4th Degree Knights. Sir Timothy Price, Sir Phillip Wight, and Sir Rich Kastel. Welcome in joining our highest ranks and your Patriotic degree! Be the best Knight you can be and help us bring in a new member...or make yourself a better Knight by making your 2nd/3rd degree at an upcoming ceremony. Remember: You were born a man...you become a Knight. For the Good of the Order Tom Gates If you are concerned about home security and crime, don't miss the March 26 Council meeting. Our guest speaker will be Officer Colten Brown of the Chesterfield Police Department. Officer Brown has been a police officer for 8 years. His experience includes serving in the patrol division, detective bureau (specializing in violent crimes), being a supervisor with the Major Case Squad, and serving in the community affairs division. He is married with 2 children, a 4-year-old and a 2-year-old. Council Chaplain Fr Michael Lampe Preparation of the Gifts (On Sundays) At the beginning of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the altar is being set with the sacred linens and vessels by the priest or deacon, assisted by the servers. As the altar is prepared in the sanctuary for the gifts of bread and wine, we are to prepare the altar of our hearts for our spiritual offering. Also, during this time there is a collection taken up, where we give a portion of our possessions representing the gift of our whole selves to God. Offering a portion of one s own possessions to God is seen throughout Sacred Scripture such as by Abel the Just, Abraham our father in faith, and the high priest Melchizedek. Father Michael J. McGivney A monetary donation during the collection fulfills the symbolic gesture in preparation for making the spiritual gift of oneself and Christ within us to God the Father during the Eucharistic Prayer. Monetary donations also indicate and strengthen having God as our God and not having money as our god. Lastly, they are used to cover the expenses of the parish enabling us to come together and worship God. Bread, wine, and the collection are brought in procession by members of the congregation to the priest. They represent all the faithful, and the gifts they bring represent all that we are offering to God at this Mass. Giving the gifts to the priest represent the request of the people for the priest to offer all these things to God on behalf of all of us. The priest and deacon (if present) pray certain prayers quietly as the offertory hymn is sung. Then, the priest washes his hands asking God to cleanse him of his sins. The priest asks the people to pray that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. The people respond, with prayer asking that God accept the sacrifice and listing the reasons for the sacrifice: for His glory, for us, and for the Church. The Preparation of the Gifts conclude with the Prayer Over the Offerings, which like the Collect, is specific for the celebration of the day.

3 Community Director Don Durand The Knight Times, March 2019, Page 3 of 6 February Blood Drive Sixty-three people came to the blood drive; that was the second highest number of people since Pete Bruggeman has been doing the blood drive. 59 acceptable units of blood were donated at the event. All went well and there were very favorable comments from everyone about the Red Cross workers who helped make the blood drive a success. Many thanks to Pete for his great work, to the knights who worked at the event, and to all those at Ascension who donated blood. St. Agatha Easter - We as a council are beginning the first of our Adopt-a-Family program at St. Agatha's for Easter. Please bring requested food items and/or monetary donations to the March 26th council meeting. The requested food items were listed in a knight's sent on Monday, March 4th. We will shop at Aldi's on April 4th and deliver the food/monetary donations that same day. Thanks to all the knights and ladies for your help with this program Culture of Life Ted Naegel Felice Cuores: Lots of green was evident at the March 9 dance party celebrating St Patrick and the Irish. We had 199 guests chaperoned by 37 volunteers, including ten from Ascension. It was great to see Ascension rebound after three months of low participation. Thank you. Our next event will be the ever-popular Cardinals with a visit from Fredbird on April 13. Volunteers will again be solicited at our March 26 Council and Auxiliary meetings. Upcoming Events: Novena for Life, March 18-26: Daily with prayers to be sent out Deacon Diaper Drive: March 23, Days for Life, Ascension Day of Prayer at Planned Parenthood, March 26 Felice Coures, April 13 at St. Clare of Assisi, Ellisville Family Director Ron Meier Family of the Month - Please help me in congratulating Gene & Carolyn Czajkowski for becoming Family of the Month for January We thank Gene & Carolyn for all their help and support they provide to the Council, Ladies Auxiliary, Parish and Community. As stated before, if you know of a Family worthy of being nominated as Family of the Month, please let me know. Special Well as you guessed it, another one of our Brother Knights was NOT in attendance at the Council Meeting February 26, 2019 when his name and number was drawn. So, the Jack Pot continues to grow to well over $ dollars. Hope you can make the next meeting scheduled for Tuesday March 26th at 7:30pm in the Parish Hall. Good luck to all, remember to purchase a ticket or two. 5th Sunday - March 31st. - Our first 5th Sunday Mass and Celebration for 2019 will be held on Sunday March 31st. Let s try and pack the Ascension Church for 8:00am Mass that morning all sitting as a Council in the front left of the main isle in church. I am in the process of planning a Breakfast at Mimi s immediately following mass in their private dining room in the front of the restaurant. So why not join us for mass that day then a great social gathering at Mimi s following. There will be more information to follow. Easter Bunny & Donut Sunday in the MPR April 14th - On Sunday April 14, 2019 from 8am till 11:00am the Easter Bunny will be visiting the children of Ascension in the MPR. This is in conjunction with the Parish Donut Sunday as well. A wide variety of donuts will be available as always, along with coffee, juice and milk. The Easter Bunny will be handing out candy filled Easter Eggs along with the Coloring Book to the children visiting him that morning. So hop on over to the MPR for another fun filled event. Good Friday April 19th - It's not too late to update your calendar with attending Good Friday Services at Ascension Church with your Family and Friends on Friday April 19, We as Knights need to encourage our fellow parishioners to get involved in these liturgies. I will be the first to say that i had not attended Good Friday services for a while, but a few years ago I attended and never missed since. I found the service to be a very emotional experience realizing what our Lord sacrificed for each one of us. Watch the bulletins for more detail

4 The Knight Times, March 2019, Page 4 of 6 Holy Spirit Assembly 4th Degree Joe Burleski Greetings fellow Ascension Council Knights from your Holy Spirit 4th Degree Assembly! Thank you to all who attended and supported the St Louis 4th Degree Exemplification on Saturday, March 2, at the St Louis Airport Hilton. Of the 8 Assemblies participating, Holy Spirit had the largest number of 4th Degree candidates: 23 of the 88 graduates. Congratulations to fellow Ascension members Richard Kastel, Timothy Price, and Phillip Wight who became 4th Degree Sir Knights. We welcome anyone considering the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree, the Patriotic Degree! Any Ascension Knights interested in joining the 4th Degree please see me, Ron Meier, or Bill Lukas. We have upcoming Exemplifications on Saturday, April 13, in Kansas City as well as on Saturday, June 29 (Kirksville is the tentative location). I am providing free transportation for both events. We were honored to have our own Holy Spirit Assembly Choir -- with many Ascension members, both men and ladies -- perform at the March 2 4th Degree Exemplification. We are very fortunate to have the choir perform at the upcoming Missouri KofC State Convention in Jefferson City (April 26-28). The Mass will be 4:30pm Saturday afternoon at the Capitol Plaza Hotel (Missouri & Jefferson rooms). Please note that in 2 months our annual elections for the fraternal year will take place during our May 22 Assembly meeting. We are always looking for passionate people to lead and serve. Please consider running for an officer position or serving as a director. Contact me or any Assembly officer for further information. Our next monthly Assembly meeting will be held Wednesday, March 27, at Holy Infant. We will meet in the Monsignor Buchheit Center, same location as last month, at 627 Dennison Dr, in Ballwin, MO. The meeting will begin at 7pm with refreshments being served both before and after the meeting. Join us as we welcome our newest 4th Degree members. There will be no guest speaker. Happy Spring to all! Founders Day - March 29, 2019 The Knights of Columbus will be celebrating its 137th Year Anniversary on March 29, 2019 by celebrating Founders Day. The Knights of Columbus was founded by Father Michael J. McGivney, curate at St. Mary s parish in New Haven, Conn., and a small group of Catholic laymen. The organization received it s charter from the state of Connecticut on March 29, In forming the organization Father McGivney hoped to help Catholic men remain steadfast in their faith through mutual encouragement while establishing an elementary system of insurance that the widows and children of members in the group who might die would not find themselves in dire financial straits. Founded in New Haven, Conn. by Father Michael J. McGivney in 1882, the Knights of Columbus is the largest Catholic lay organization in the world with more than 1.7 million members. The Knights have donated more than $140 million and over 64 million in service hours. On Friday March 29th, we are encouraging all Knights from our Council to attend 8:00am in the main church and help us remember our Founder - Father Michael J. McGivney and pray for his canonization. Hope you can make it.
