We can be proud of what we have accomplished as an Assembly to date and we should let others know. Ascension Council Charlie Williams Cardinal Ritter Allen Holtmeyer St Genevieve dubois Tom Dougherty CPOP Greg Mathiesen Holy Infant Tom Wardenburg Incarnate Word Stan Mengwasser St Joseph / Marian Art Bowles St Clement of Rome - St. Alban Roe Ron Krentz St Clare of Assisi Bill Cannon 1 FROM THE FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR: Brother Knights & Ladies, I have become continually more frustrated with the political process, the rancor between political parties, between races and social classes, and the general state of discourse and participation of America s citizens to focus on policies for the good of the Country above personal interests. In the readings from mass on Sunday, the reading from 2Timothy 3 included proclaim the word; be persistent, whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching". An excerpt from the gospel from Luke 18 " will not God then secure the rights of His chosen ones, who call

out to Him day and night? Will He be slow to answer them? I tell you, He will see that justice is done for them speedily." This reminder of God's great faithfulness is like so many others that I usually miss because I am grumbling about the negativity instead of focusing on the positive. At this time in our Nation s history, I believe we are at another low point and we are faced with a choice when deciding how we are going to react and what we are going to do. We are asked and challenged to be steadfast in our prayers and constant in our faith. "Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us." -Eph 3:20 I pray that we will return to a nation with an instinct for building community; to be a people of hope and faith. Let us focus on serving others and suffering if necessary for our convictions. Respectfully, David Goetz Faithful Navigator SEPTEMBER MEETING NOTES: The September meeting notes are published on the Assembly website and are mailed with hard copies of the October Newsletter. LADIES AUXILIARY MEMBERS: Sir Knights and Ladies, Our son has completed his training in Pensacola and will be receiving his wings of gold next week. As a result, I went searching for verses about wings. So what is the first verse that popped up? Psalm 17 A Prayer to David. It was as if it was meant to be! David is in crisis and pleas for God s protection: I have called upon You, for You will hear me, O God; Incline Your ear to me, and hear my speech. Show Your marvelous lovingkindness by your right hand, O You who save those who trust in You From those who rise up against them. Keep me as the apple of Your eye; Hide me under the shadow of Your wings, From the wicked who oppress me, From my deadly enemies who surround me. Psalm 17:6-9 David puts his complete trust in God, faithfully believing in heavenly hope, confidently calling to God, knowing He will hear and respond. Keep me as the apple of Your eye is a request for God to keep David safe always. Hide me 2 under the shadow of Your wings describes David s desire to be sheltered from dangers. Together these phrases portray a powerful picture of God s love and care for us. Let us open our hearts and believe as David believed in God s devotion to His people. To those of you who have served or are serving as aviators or flight officers, may God keep you in the apple of His eye and shelter you under the shadow of His wings. Sincerely, Michelle Goetz President LADIES AUXILIARY BIRTHDAYS: October None Happy Birthday to You! May you have many more to come. We are asking a few of you with a desire to get involved and possibly some past experience with one of these similar events, to become part of a committee to organize one or multiple events. 7 DID YOU KNOW Each month we plan to introduce an officer or select member of the Assembly or a Parish in the Assembly. We will have biography next month. This month we include the history of St. Clare of Assisi Parish. St. Clare of Assisi Parish was established on May 19, 1963 under the loving, spiritual leadership of Fr. John Dollard. It was originally called St. Clara and later changed to St. Clare of Assisi. As a small country parish, three hundred and twenty-nine families from Ballwin, Chesterfield and Ellisville worshiped as a community for the first time in the Passionist Convent Chapel on September 1, The church was built on the present site and dedicated by Joseph Cardinal Ritter, Archbishop of St. Louis, on August 11, Msgr. John Dollard remained as pastor until his death in January Rev. Richard Buchheit assumed the responsibilities in June 1993 and then passed the ministry to Fr. Richard Hanneke in November Our present pastor, Msgr. Kevin Callahan, took the position in January 2005 and our associate pastor is Fr. Brian Hecktor and we have four deacons James Broom, George Smith, Dennis Stovall and Alan Whitson. Our first educational building was completed with eight classrooms in 1965 and was used for Parish School of Religion. St. Clare of Assisi School opened in September 1979 for 73 students in grades kindergarten through third. After that, the parish added a grade to the school each year. The second building was erected in The first graduating class was in The western wing was added in 1997 and the cafeteria/dining hall was completed for the school year Today 306 children in grades kindergarten through eighth grade are educated in our parish school and 265 in our Parish School of Religion. Our Pre-School started in the school year, , and has 32 three and four-year olds enrolled. 7

I wanted to give special thanks and recognition to our Faithful Friar Bishop Hermann for all he does for the Archdiocese of St. Louis and the Knights of Columbus. I THOUGHT YOU SHOULD KNOW WE, THE LOWLY, CRY OUT TO GOD FROM OUR POVERTY Bishop Robert J. Hermann Submitted on October 13, 2016 The responsorial psalm ties together the good news of all three readings for the 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time, which tell that the Lord is deeply moved by the prayers of the lowly. In the first reading, Sirach says God shows no favorites "but He hears the cry of the oppressed...the prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds; it does not rest till it reaches its goal, nor will it withdraw till the Most High responds." The poor aren't so much distracted by lack of life's essentials, as they are empowered by that lack to turn to God in poverty. Their poverty creates within them both room and hunger for God. They are single-minded in their search for God. He alone provides for them what they need to remain alive. For the destitute and starving, God isn't an optional extra, but the only source of goodness that keeps them alive and reveals God's purpose for their lives. The psalmist prays, "I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall be ever in my mouth. Let my soul glory in the Lord; the lowly will hear me and be glad." Wasn't this also the cry of the lowly virgin of Nazareth who exclaimed, "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord...for He has looked upon His handmaid's lowliness"? She who was conceived without sin had such a clear vision of her poverty before God. Her poverty welcomed the Most Holy Trinity long before she was asked to give birth to the Messiah. Paul also recognizes his poverty in his trial, when, like Jesus, even his friends deserted him. "But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength...i was rescued from the lion's mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil threat and will bring me safe to His heavenly kingdom." Who are today's lowly crying out to God from their poverty? Aren't they those who struggle daily to beg for food to get them through the day? Aren't they those who are struggling valiantly against the addictions of pornography and alcoholism? Aren't they the single parents who have been abandoned by their spouses in providing for the ongoing needs of their children? 8

God is in the midst of their struggle. If not for God inspiring them in their struggle, they would give up hope and simply despair. Their life's struggle has taught them the value of humility and dependence upon God. In the Gospel, Jesus addresses those who rely upon their own self-righteousness. The selfproclaimed "holy" Pharisee praises himself for his own goodness before God. He proudly thanks God that he is "not like the rest of humanity greedy, dishonest, adulterous or even like this tax-collector. I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income." On the other hand, the tax collector, who knows his own past history of sinfulness, simply "beat his breast and prayed, 'O God, be merciful to me a sinner.'" Jesus tells us that this tax collector went home justified, forgiven of his sins. Why do we find it so difficult to admit our sinfulness to a God who delights in hearing the cry of the poor? Might it be related to our years as a young child with our parents? If we did something wrong, we could expect at least a mild reprimand. Perhaps in addition to a reprimand, we also experienced the withholding of affections from our parents. Hence, to avoid the pain of rejection, we would cover up and deny wrongdoing. The mistake we make is to transfer to God the same behavior we experienced from our parents. In such a case, denial is mistakenly perceived as an apparent freedom from guilt. However, the big lie we subconsciously bought into was to equate our parents' attitudes toward our mistakes with God's attitude toward us when we sin. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Once we understand that God expresses His love for us through the forgiveness of sin, then we will more readily admit our sins. Try thinking about this: You should receive as much joy coming out of the confessional as you do in receiving His Body and Blood in Holy Communion. Jesus told us there is more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than there is over 99 righteous people. So if we want to bring joy to heaven, let us beg of Jesus the grace to see our sinfulness for what it really is. We need to develop a healthy distrust of self and a greater trust in Jesus. St. Philip Neri said, "O Lord, keep your hand this day over Philip, if you do not, Philip will betray you." The Little Flower had a very healthy attitude. She indicated that if God were to reveal to her that she was the greatest sinner in the world, she would run to Him, throw herself into His lap, confident that He would forgive her everything. Asking God for His mercy brings us relief. The more we ask Jesus to show us our sinfulness, the more humility brings us relief. Our friendship with Jesus simply deepens. We then experience a deeper compassion for our fellow travelers, family members and work associates. We will grow in our desire to show others the compassion which Christ shows us. Compassion is so much more fun than resentment and angry judgments. Should you admit that your heart is consumed with bitterness and cry out to God from the depths of your heart like the publican in the temple, you too will go home justified. 9

Civic Committee Report Besides looking at candidates, there are amendments to review, and there are judges to vote out of office (do you know of resource to know how they have done their job?) Please log on and get your ballot to see what additional issues are in your city. Get your specific district sample ballot by confirming polling place On the page that shows polling place there will be a link Sample Ballots: View Sample Ballot CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT NO.1 Proposed by Article IV, Section 47(c) Missouri Constitution (SJR 1, 2005) Shall Missouri continue for 10 years the one-tenth of one percent sales/use tax that is used for soil and water conservation and for state parks and historic sites, and resubmit this tax to the voters for approval in 10 years? The measure continues and does not increase the existing sales and use tax of one-tenth of one percent for 10 years. The measure would continue to generate approximately $90 million annually for soil and water conservation and operation of the state park system. CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT NO. 2 Proposed by Initiative Petition Shall the Missouri Constitution be amended to: - establish limits on campaign contributions by individuals or entities to political parties, political committees, or committees to elect candidates for state or judicial office, - prohibit individuals and entities from intentionally concealing the source of such contributions, - require corporations or labor organizations to meet certain requirements in order to make such contributions, and - provide a complaint process and penalties for any violations of this amendment? It is estimated this proposal will increase state government costs by at least $118,000 annually and have an unknown change in costs for local governmental entities. Any potential impact to revenues for state and local governmental entities is unknown. CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT NO. 3 Proposed by Initiative Petition Shall the Missouri Constitution be amended to: - increase taxes on cigarettes each year through 2020, at which point this additional tax will total 60 cents per pack of 20, - create a fee paid by cigarette wholesalers of 67 cents per pack of 20 on certain cigarettes, which fee shall increase annually, and - deposit funds generated by these taxes and fees into a newly established Early Childhood Health and Education Trust Fund? When cigarette tax increases are fully implemented, estimated additional revenue to state government is $263 million to $374 million annually, with limited estimated implementation costs. The revenue will fund only programs and services allowed by the proposal. The fiscal impact to local governmental entities is unknown. CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT NO. 4 Proposed by Initiative Petition Shall the Missouri Constitution be amended to prohibit a new state or local sales/use or other similar tax on any service or transaction that was not subject to a sales/use or similar 10

tax as of January 1, 2015? Potential costs to state and local governmental entities are unknown, but could be significant. The proposals passage would impact governmental entity s ability to revise their tax structures. State and local governments expect no savings from this proposal. CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT NO. 6 Proposed by the 98th General Assembly (Second Regular Session) SS HJR 53 Shall the Constitution of Missouri be amended to state that voters may be required by law, which may be subject to exception, to verify ones identity, citizenship, and residence by presenting identification that may include valid government-issued photo identification? The proposed amendment will result in no costs or savings because any potential costs would be due to the enactment of a general law allowed by this proposal. If such a general law is enacted, the potential costs to state and local governments is unknown, but could exceed $2.1 million annually. PROPOSITION A Proposed by Initiative Petition Shall Missouri law be amended to: - increase taxes on cigarettes in 2017, 2019, and 2021, at which point this additional tax will total 23 cents per pack of 20, - increase the tax paid by sellers on other tobacco products by 5 percent of manufacturers invoice price, - use funds generated by these taxes exclusively to fund transportation infrastructure projects, and - repeal these taxes if a measure to increase any tax or fee on cigarettes or other tobacco products is certified to appear on any local or statewide ballot? State government revenue will increase by approximately $95 million to $103 million annually when cigarette and tobacco tax increases are fully implemented, with the new revenue earmarked for transportation infrastructure. Local government revenues could decrease approximately $3 million annually due to decreased cigarette and tobacco sales. PROPOSITION S Shall St. Louis County levy a tax of five cents per each one hundred dollars ($100.00) of assessed valuation for the purpose of providing services to persons sixty years of age or older? 14 Dear Brother Knight, We are proud to announce that a new Knights of Columbus-produced documentary film on Divine Mercy begins airing across the country this Sunday on ABC-affiliated stations. Narrated by actor Jim Caviezel, The Face of Mercy explores the history and relevance of Divine Mercy by exploring the powerful visions of a merciful God revealed to St. Faustina, the key role played by Pope John Paul II who propelled the message of Divine Mercy onto the world stage, and the Year of Mercy bestowed upon the Church by Pope Francis. The airings are presented as part of ABC s Visions and Values Series and have a broadcast window from Oct. 16 to Dec. 16. Filmed in stunning 4K and seamlessly weaving together theology and history with modern testimonials and visual effects, this stirring film creates a remarkable tapestry of what constitutes the face of mercy in our modern world.
