1 The Messenger July 2018 Pastoral Moments July 2018 Patriotic Words that come to mind when talking about the month of July have been: Independence, Fourth of July, Freedom, Liberty, Flag, Fireworks, Patriots, Great Britain, Tea Party, Parades, Cities like: Lexington, Concord, Philadelphia, Boston. Recently we added: Picnics, beaches, hot dogs, swimming, day off, vacation, travel, sunburn. There isn't much celebration like it used to be. Does that mean Americans don t love their country as our nation once did? We have a Primary election this coming August 7. We have many vital positions to fill and many are campaigning. Will you vote? Do you know who the candidates are? Do you care? Are you registered to vote? Many registered voters are able to vote via Absentee Ballots. Since I work many elections I vote Absentee...just let the Clerk know you want to & fill out the proper form. We are in a divine election the Lord votes for you, the Devil votes against you and you cast the deciding vote. Conference Report The 2018 Annual Conference has come and gone. As of July 1 the West Michigan & Detroit Conferences along with Albion and all former Districts ceased to exist. As of July 01, 2018 the new Michigan Conference along with the new Heritage District and the other 8 Districts came into being. Another marker for July 01, I begin my second year as pastor of Quincy United Methodist Church. During the Conference there were numerous presentations of missions, projects and ministries. There were inspiring worship experiences and stimulating preaching. There was a time to Remember those of The Family who died since last Conference, Honor those Retiring, and Welcome those entering some form of ministry. In terms of actions taken I list only a very few by title (sorry I'm unable to create the atmosphere that went along with some of the debate). Conference passed or accepted: R#12 Poor People s Campaign: A National Call for a Moral Revival, R#13 Acknowledgement of Sin, R#14 Call for Unity in Diversity, R#15 Prevent Gun Violence. There were 28 in all. Heidi and I have a full list if you are interested. The big item that affects the local church is the new budget. The new, combined budget is $222,000 Less than the current combines budget, but we re not certain what that means for us specifically as the new District Share is not included in that. All this will come to us this summer. Enjoy a God filled summer. Pastor Wilson
2 May 2018 Treasurer Report General Fund: The General Fund beginning balance for May was $7,482. We received $4,897 in contributions and had $6,996 in expenses with an ending balance of $5,384. Our expenses for day-to day operation are still greater than our contributions. With this in mind some contributions to the General Fund are recommended. However, I can also recommend giving to designated funds of Directed or Building/Capital Funds. With my own contributions which I do weekly, I give once a month to General Fund and then the reminder to the designated fund of Directed. If you give once a month, please consider switching between General Fund one month then a designated fund for a couple of months. The Directed Fund is the fund that includes the Women s, Kid s Club, Funeral, Camp/scholarship, Events, Adult Study Fellowship and Rada Knives. The Directed Fund helps support most of QUMC s programs and outreach ministries. The Building/Capital is any major purchase or expense for the building or for the church from painting, to heating, and computers. Any major expense. General Fund Expenses included: Usual monthly expenses for payroll, Pastor housing, mileage, utilities and supplies, plus $556 for the second of four payments of the insurance, Musician for Worship for two different services $200, Pulpit Fill $100 Ministry Shares of $890. Designated Funds Expenses included: Special Offering- (UMCOR $65.90), Directed Fund - $293 Healing Hill of Hope which was donations & a pass through with no expense to QUMC, $50 donation to Family Promise -a pass through, $330 Women Luncheon with the following breakdown Food-$117, Signers- $100, Speaker gift & door prizes- $113. Many hours & materials were donated by those working on luncheon. Mother s Day flower expense of $38 was donated and a pass through with no expense to QUMC, $179 annual expense for the One Call Tell All program, three Memorial plaques $24, elevator expense for two new doors/gates $5,051 all but $51 was very generously donated, with the only expense to QUMC $51. We are Blessed to have such caring individuals. Designated Fund Income included: (DESIGNATED GIVING ISN'T COUNTED WHEN CALCULATING MINISTRY SHARES) $40 Pastor Discretionary Fund, $409 Special Offering, $50 Memorial Fund, $325, $724 Directed Fund. Designated Funds Balances at the end of Month: Pastor Discretionary $1,488, Special Offering $1,284, Memorial $2,648, Building/Capital $24,337, Directed Fund $7,377. The Kid s Day in the Park is coming up soon and QUMC will donate $100 toward bikes for children, as we ve done in the past, from the Directed Fund. God's Grace to All, Lin M. Johnson, Treasurer

6 Why the US Flag is folded 13 times The flag of the United States of America is ceremoniously folded 13 times when lowered or handed to the next of kin at the burial of a veteran. The first fold of our flag is a symbol of life. The second fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life. The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing our ranks who gave a portion of their lives in the defense of our country and to attain peace throughout the world. The fourth fold represents our weaker nature. We turn to God in times of peace, as well as in times of war, for divine guidance. The fifth fold is made as a tribute to our country. To paraphrase Stephen Decatur: Our Country is dealing with other countries, may she always be right; but it is still our country right or wrong. The sixth fold represents where our hearts lie. It is with our hearts that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. The seventh fold is made in tribute to our armed forces. It is these brave men and women who protect our country against her enemies, foreign or domestic. The eighth fold is in honor of mothers, for whom the flag flies on Mothers Day. The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood. The faith, love, loyalty, and devotion of women helped to mold the character of countless men and women who have made this nation great. The 10 fold is a tribute to fathers. They, too, have given their sons and daughters for the defense of our country. The 11 fold represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon, glorifying the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The 12 fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. The 13 fold brings the stars uppermost, reminding us of our nation s motto, in God We Trust. When our flag is completely folded, it takes on the appearance of a tricorner hat, reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, the sailors and marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, and all who followed in the U.S. armed forces. They have preserved the rights, privileges, and freedoms we enjoy and celebrate today. The next time you observe a flag ceremony honoring someone who has served our country in the armed forces, the police department, or fire department, keep in mind all the important reasons behind each and every fold. And remember those who sacrificed so much for us by honoring our flag and our country. Written by Jeannie Nichols Submitted by Glenda Brown
