Dear precious ones, These have been difficult times for our world! Earthquakes, flooding, hurricanes, fires and all the other challenges. My heart is heavy. We did take an offering earlier when it first started, but the need continues and is great. I am very pleased with our United Methodist efforts through our Committee on Relief. The aid gets where it is needed. And that is something I can happily get behind. Because of the needs in different areas, we are being encouraged to give to UMCOR generally and they will place the money for the needs. If we can, I would like us to take this month to give more to this great need. I am asking myself, and all of you to make a plan to give sacrificially. Can we give up a dinner out, a coffee, a trinket, or whatever to give beyond what is comfortable? We will have a container in the front of the church every Sunday in October for you to place your gift. Please prayerfully consider how we can make a difference! Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. Eph:1:3 October Sermon Schedule October 1 Mephibosheth 2 Samuel 9:1-13 October 8 175th Anniversary Celebration October 15 How Do We Get Revival Rev. 2:1a,2a, 4-5a October 22 What Is Holiness? 1 Peter 1:13-16 October 29 Crises of Faith Romans 4:3-5, 5:1-2a

Revival Beginning October 15 th, we will start a new series for sermons and small group study. Please sign up if you are interested in a small group or Sunday School class. Since we are celebrating our 175 th anniversary this month it will be interesting to go into our historical roots to see how it relates to our today. In Revival, Adam Hamilton takes us on a six-week journey through England tracing the life of John Wesley. Wesley s message and his faith continue to speak to twenty-first-century Christians, calling for a revival of our hearts and souls so that our world might be changed. His story is our story. It s our heritage, it defines our faith, and it challenges us to rediscover our spiritual passion. Commitment Sunday On November 12th, we will celebrate God s gifts to us by committing to support the ministry at Flushing UMC with our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness during both services. You will be receiving a mailing with the information for this opportunity. May God continue to bless us! All Saints Celebration On Sunday, November 5 th we will be celebrating the lives of those who have passed since last All Saints Day. We will have a video with pictures. Please share your photo with us at the office by October 25 th so the video can be completed. Thanks!

Youth (beginning in 6th grade) should be receiving information regarding events and meetings via and snail mail. Check out the bulletin board in Fellowship Hall for calendars and other information. It's that time of year again. The choirs are back into the full swing for the fall. There is ALWAYS room for new members in all the choirs. The only prerequisites are a desire to worship God through music, and to be part of a caring group who will know your name, miss you when you are absent, and care for you when you need a friend. No previous musical experience is needed. Please come and join us! For more information contact Christie Dover. Many thanks to the 54 workers who helped pull another successful Food Giveaway on Tuesday. We served 101 households, which represented 308 family members. Great work, everyone!! -Sue Martin, Marlene Cooper, Becky Stamm The rummage sale this year raised $1, to go towards missions. Thank you everyone for donating your items, time (and for making purchases) to make this sale a success! - United Methodist Women

Flushing UMC Received it s 1st Energy Star Certification! I m pleased to tell you that Flushing UMC has earned its 1 st U.S. Environmental Protection Agency s (EPA) ENERGY STAR certification for superior energy efficiency. Consumers Energy has a free program through Michigan Interfaith Power and Light to help churches save money and energy by switching out inefficient lightbulbs and faucet aerators with energy efficient ones. This year they came again to see where they can help us save additional money and energy. In doing so, we qualified for a free application (a $1, savings) to be recognized as a ENERGY STAR certified building. Their engineer did a walk-thru and we are now certified. This recognition is awarded to buildings that outperform 75 percent of similar buildings nationwide. We re in good company: More than half of the FORTUNE100 participates in the EPA s ENERGY STAR program, and tens of thousands of buildings have earned the ENERGY STAR. This recognition represents the diligent work of our Trustees to save money and reduce operating costs through industry best practices and careful attention to energy performance each month. And the savings are real. In fact, the ENERGY STAR is the only energy efficiency certification that is based on actual, verified energy performance. Studies have shown that ENERGY STAR certified buildings: Have lower operating costs and increased asset value: ENERGY STAR certified buildings and plants use, on average, 35 percent less energy than similar buildings nationwide. The cost savings can be substantial. For example, ENERGY STAR certified office buildings cost $0.50 less per square foot to operate than their peers. In 2015, ENERGY STAR certified buildings and plants saved $1.7 billion, or an average of more than $250,000 per building. The average church will save $1100 per year on their electric bill.

Connect with your community: Americans are big believers in doing the right thing, and they expect the same of the professionals in their communities. More than 65 percent of adults like to do business with environmentally responsible companies. Contribute fewer greenhouse gas emissions to the environment Increased asset value Hedge against future mandates Protect the environment In 4-6 weeks, we will be receiving an Energy Star label for our entrance. By displaying the ENERGY STAR, we are publicly showcasing our commitment to environmental responsibility, and demonstrating that we re doing our part to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and preserve public health today and for future generations. So check out the little blue label on display it represents proven, verified superior energy performance over a 12-month period. In fact, ENERGY STAR certified buildings and plants perform in the top 25 percent of similar buildings nationwide! Thank you for being a part of our sustainability story by taking simple actions to cut energy waste like turning off the lights in empty rooms, and reporting energy waste to our Trustees. Here s to a year of cutting energy waste, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and doing our part to protect the environment together! A Study Committee has been formed to consider building improvements and needs for our church. We will be asking you for your input as to what you think is important. The Survey Form will be available on the following Sundays: September 17 and 24, and October 8.
