2 Pastor s Pause: Rev. Bonnie Shively Live Worthy Most important, live together in a manner worthy of Christ s gospel. Do this, whether I come and see you or I m absent and hear about you. Do this so that you stand firm, united in one spirit and mind as you struggle together to remain faithful to the gospel. Philippians 1:27 (CEB) We often misunderstand the will and intention of God. We get so wrapped up in what we think we need, and so bound up in our sense of what we think we deserve, that we fail to recognize what God is even about and to remember what God has already done for us. A PBS documentary, Bonhoeffer, tells the story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer s life - a German pastor, theologian, and opponent to the Nazi regime. History knows him as one of the heroic few Christian leaders of the Confessing Church opposing the anti-semitic policies of Adolf Hitler. The documentary focused on the complexity both of Bonhoeffer s personality and the turbulent times in which he lived. The surprise of the documentary is the revelation that he didn t see himself as a hero. He saw himself as a man with questions & weaknesses typical of the human condition. In a letter written to friends in the resistance movement he wrote, We have been silent witnesses of evil deeds. Will our inward power of resistance be strong enough for us to find our way back? Dietrich Bonhoeffer was no different than the apostle Paul, as we read in Philippians 1: In his letter, Paul honestly says he is not sure whether he more preferred to live or to die. He continues to offer instruction and encouragement to the Philippians. His struggles have had their success, and as his life has borne fruit of the gospel, so will theirs by their willingness to live.in a manner worthy of the gospel - v.27. What is the lesson for us, today? Stand firm in one spirit; strive side by side; be of one mind; and do not be intimidated by opponents. The result? We will know who we are & whose we are. No one will be able to dissuade us of anything different. You and I are called to live worthy - that is, living a life worthy of the Gospel, so that others will know the love God has for them; and the Salvation that Christ offers to all. 3 Newsletter Deadline The deadline for getting your submission(s) into our weekly newsletter is 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Please have all of your submission requests to the church office on time. Upcoming Events The Well Registration for The Well ends on Sept. 30 th. Brochures with registration information are available in the back of the sanctuary. Bible Study Beginning Monday, Sept. 18, Fred Petze will be leading the study Encounters with Jesus. This weekly bible study will be held 9 11 a.m. on Mondays in the Church Parlor. Other Group Meetings: Sept. 6:15 p.m. Finance Committee Sept. 4 p.m. Staff Meeting Sept. 6 p.m. Nominations Committee Flower Fair Meeting On Tuesday, September 26, there will be a Flower Fair Meeting in the Fellowship Hall at 6 p.m. The purpose of this meeting is to review the success of our 2017 Flower Fair event, and begin planning for next year s Flower Fair. Anyone that participated this year is asked to come and share their perspectives. Easton District Lay Academy The Easton District Lay Servant Ministries will be holding their next sessions at Union UMC, Federalsburg on October 7 th & 14 th. Registration forms are available at the back of the sanctuary and in the church office. Registration deadline is October 2 nd. 3

Middle School meets on Thursdays at 3 p.m. High School meets on Sundays beginning October 1 st Our annual Nursing Home visit is coming soon the youth dress in costumes and give residents of the local nursing homes treat bags! Sugar free jello and pudding are needed to fill our bags! Please drop off in basket in the Richardson Room! Thank you for your support! 5

If you have a wheelchair you re not using, please bring it in to the church 10-2 weekdays and let Toni know you brought it, or bring it on Sunday to. It will be a blessing to someone. Please contact the church office for more information. Food Pantry Help Needed St. Paul's Gatherings Pastor Bonnie is looking for ways to have conversations with the St. Paul's family. This helps us get to know one another better as we share thoughts, ideas, history and a vision for the future. We are looking for people to host these gatherings in their homes or if you are unable to open up your home, perhaps you might consider hosting here at the church. For more information or to be a host, please contact Pastor Bonnie. Our Food Pantry is putting together teams to help support our food ministry. We are currently looking for help on our Set-Up and Distribution Team, our Welcome/Prayer Team, and one or two people to serve as Food Pantry Coordinators.
