2 National Day of Prayer Service On Thursday, May 3 we will gather as a Flushing community to pray for our nation. This year we will have a service at 7:00 pm at the Flushing Community Nazarene Church. We will have music and prayer together. There will also be a community choir. Save the date! Now is the time for us to clearly agree to pray in this manner for America: 1. Pray for unity of thought and strategy among our nation s leadership over these critical issues in America today. Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly and it will be given to him. James 1:5 2. Pray that we agree clearly, unite visibly, and pray extraordinarily for the next Great Spiritual Awakening in America. They all were continually united in prayer. Acts 1:14 3. Pray for God to intervene supernaturally across America as we call upon all Americans to pray for our nation on the National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 3, Making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 Ways to give in May 2018 We have moved the offering for Golden Cross Sunday to July 8th this year in order to better prepare for our annual conference. Sunday, May 6th - Detroit Annual Conference special offering. The 2018 Michigan Area Annual Conference is May 31 - June 3. We will be taking a special offering for this conference on Sunday, May 6th. Bob Halbadel and Kris Supernaw will take our special offering with them to Traverse City for the opening ceremony. This year s offering will again include our covenant partners in Haiti and Liberia. This will be the last time the Detroit Annual Conference and the West Michigan Annual Conference will meet as separate organizations. On January 1, 2019 we will become the Michigan Conference of The United Methodist Church. The 2018 theme of annual conference is Engage With ministry and mission. Over four special days, we will introduce a new model for mission for the Michigan Conference. This year, we ask that members explore how they can move from a mission of charity to a ministry of engagement. The type of engagement that leads to lifelong empowerment and change. Church World Service Blanket Sunday Sunday, May 13th Our neighbors deserve warmth and comfort You will have an opportunity to give this Mother s Day. We will be taking up an offering to help provide comfort in times of crisis. Your contribution will help families around the world recover from disasters and displacement, and build viable, sustainable lives and communities. CWS Blankets provides warm blankets for families left homeless by a tornado or other disaster. Each blanket costs only $10, but these blankets can be a vital resource for someone needing a little support, warmth and encouragement. Envelopes will be provided in the bulletin. Next time, we will look at the history and development of the United Brethren Church. Major social issues divided the churches and their congregations after the Civil War, but discussions about mergers also began to be heard. Jim Thomas Historian Evangelical United Brethren Church Bishop Reuben H. Mueller (left) and Methodist Bishop Lloyd C. Wicke join hands on April 23, A Coordination of Nurturing Ministries is being formed! In response to a change in Pastor Jeanne s responsibility last fall, a decision has been made to implement a new role of lay ministry, to be known as Coordination of Nurturing Ministries, as a means of extending the hands and feet of our Pastors in providing Congregational Care. The Coordinator position will be shared by a team of two lay members, Mary Lou Martin who attends the traditional service and Denise Sands who attends the Contemporary service. By bringing our current caring and nurturing ministries together under one umbrella, we hope to provide a way to reach out proactively to assist our congregation in understanding, accessing and serving in the nurturing services currently being provided which include: CarePartners (led by A list of potential caring Laragene Triplett) ministries, include: Stephen Ministry (led by DivorceCare for Adults John Henson & Rose Dessinger) DivorceCare for youth Caring Post (led by Nancy Elsner) GriefShare for youth Worship Service at Hyde Park Congregational visitation UMM Helping Hands team to follow up with post hospital support. GriefShare (led by Mary Lou Martin) Prison Ministry (led by Teresa Casteel) Also, a Telecare ministry (led by Peggy Blanchard) is currently being developed as a means of proactively reaching out to our congregation and is expected to be launched within the next month and will be looking for volunteers willing to call people once a month.

5 A History of the United Methodist Church On April 23, 1968, The United Methodist Church was created when bishops of The Methodist Church and The Evangelical United Brethren Church joined hands at a conference in Dallas, TX. This was the culmination of many years of discussions and meeting between the two denominations that each had a long history of influential ministries. The Methodist movement began with the work of John and Charles Wesley in England during the Seventeen Hundreds. The Methodist Episcopal Church in America was organized at the Christmas Conference at Lovely Lane Chapel in Baltimore in December In 1800, Philip Otterbein and Martin Boehm formed The Church of the United Brethren in Christ and in 1803, The Evangelical Association was organized by Jacob Albright, a former Lutheran. Both churches were influenced by and nurtured in Methodist teaching. They would formally unite in Issues of slavery, racism and women s rights created divisions in the Methodist Church that split the denomination. Richard Allen, an emancipated slave, left the church in 1816 and organized The African Methodist Episcopal Church. The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church was begun in A dispute in 1830 about granting representation and voting privileges to laity resulted in several thousand defections and the creation of The Methodist Protestant Church. This church remained strong until 1939, when it joined The Methodist Episcopal Church and The Methodist Episcopal Church, South to become The Methodist Church. Slavery was an issue simmering below the surface of the church until 1844, when the pro-slavery and anti-slavery factions clashed at the General Conference. The conflict concerned one of the church s five bishops, who owned slaves. The Conference voted to suspend him, which led dissidents in slave holding states to separate and create The Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The animosity between the two churches remained high leading up to the outbreak of the Civil War. The M.E. Church, South suffered heavily during the war as many of its churches were damaged or destroyed and many of its clergy and young members were killed or wounded. However, in the years after the war the southern Methodists experienced a time of growth and vitality, which saw its membership grow four fold in fifty years. You are invited to attend a special reception to recognize our High School Graduates. Seniors will be honored in both worship services. Open house will be between services on Christian Education Sunday. Annual Fund Raising Event For PET Project There will be a dinner to honor Ed Noll for his commitment to the Mobility Project, formerly P.E.T. The dinner will be Friday, May 18 at Goodrich UMC at 6:15 PM. The adult price is $15.00 per adult and $10.00 per child. See Carl Pierce for tickets before Sunday, May 13. Call and leave a message.
