2 This year, 2017, marks the 175th anniversary of what we now call Flushing United Methodist Church! In 1840 Flushing residents began holding religious services in a sawmill. The Methodists became organized in 1842 and ministered to by circuit riders. Fellowship Hall was built in 1957, our present sanctuary erected in A History of Flushing UMC 1835 First settlers arrive in the Flushing area A dam is built across the Flint River, followed soon after by a saw mill that is operated on the east side of the river The Flint River Circuit comes into being. Circuit riders travel a route that takes them to villages and settlements around Flint and Genesee County Flushing Township is organized The plat for the village is laid out. Church services are held in the saw mill The First Methodist Episcopal Church of Flushing Mills is organized and becomes part of the Flint River Circuit The first church building is built on the corner of Main and Hazelton on land donated by James Seymour. It is dedicated in 1848 by Rev. Seth Reed, head of the Flint River Circuit. It will burn down in Flushing Methodist Episcopal Church becomes a standing appointment and the Rev. Giles Belknap is the first pastor. He will serve two years. You will have the opportunity to enjoy a meal prepared by our FUMC UMW, have a time of worship and then attend a workshop to help in your area of service to the church. See the listing of workshops that will be offered. Registration forms are available at the office. We will need volunteers to set up different rooms in the church for the workshops. 5 Special Speaker Pastor Pat Harton will bring the message on Feb 19. She is a retired Local Pastor, having served at Mt. Bethel UMC in the Crossroads District. She retired from her secular career as a business analyst in 1999 to spend time with her husband, Bruce, traveling and enjoying their grandchildren. God then led her to serve as a pastor. Since retiring from the ministry, Pat and Bruce moved to Brighton to be closer to their children and grand-children. They attend Hartland UMC where she leads two small group studies, serves as chair of the worship committee and on several other committees. Family Promise We are excited that one of the graduate families that stayed with us at Flushing United Methodist Church last June will be present and share their experience as to how Family Promise helped them get back on their feet and into their own home again. Donations to Family Promise are accepted at any time.
