2 What a way to start the month of April EASTER! It brings us not only a reminder of weather changing and readying for the colors of May flowers, but it is also the reminder that Christ was defeated by death God s love cannot be contained in a tomb sin no longer needs to reign in our lives Christ is risen risen indeed! Easter is celebrated every year. We are reacquainted with the story and bedrock of our faith. How does the truth of the resurrection integrate into your everyday life? Let s spend some time to ruminate around the impact of Easter. The Jesuit poet Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote a poem entitled 'The Wreck of the Deutschland.' In this wreck, Franciscan nuns drowned on the German ship Deutschland. In this poem Gerard writes this, 'Let him easter in us.' Have you ever heard easter as a verb? Think about it for a moment. Easter represents many things in our faith. The first thing is that Easter reverses so much. Good Friday is no longer the stronghold as it was then. God is not dead! Sin has not won. The hopelessness of Friday and Saturday is gone. God s promises are again seen as valid and true! The reversal must be pondered! Let Christ 'easter' in us. The truth of what God did in the resurrection of his Son needs to influence us, the way to live. We then show forth the power of the resurrection to others. Walter Burghardt wrote that Christ easters in us in three ways: (1) By a faith that rises above doubt. (2) By a hope that conquers despair. (3) By a love that does justice. That is a BIG verb! Paul writes a powerful truth in the book of Romans 10: 9 If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved. 11 As the Scriptures tell us, Anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced. 12 Jew and Gentile are the same in this respect. Main St. Time: 6:30 p.m. RSVP Church Office If you would like to share your appreciation of Debbie s ministry, please send a letter to Nancy Line for a scrap book. nline123@gmail.com or 2599 Columbia Berkley, MI Lindsay Moore, FPGC s director, recently met with Carolyn Malaski, Family Promise Coordinator, and Pastor Debbie for our annual review of our participation as a host church. In 2017 we were hosts for 9 families during 4 weeks. There were a total of 29 guests with children ranging in age from 2 mo. to 18 yrs. We provided 255 safe night s sleep and 28 dinners and breakfasts. Lunch and snack foods were also available. Servants from Flushing UMC, St. Robert s and Flushing Community Church of the Nazarene served a total of 1, hours during the year. Our congregation donated nearly $1,700 to FPGC, which does not include individual donations. Since the beginning of Family Promise in 2014, 32 of the 39 families who participated in and graduated from the program, are successfully maintaining their own homes. More recently, 4 of the 5 families who were with us in December 2017 graduated and are doing well. We are blessed to have so many generous individuals who give of their time, talents and donations to support this ministry. A special thank you to Sue Martin, Denise Johnson, Ruth Brown, Lorena Ham, Nancy Elsner, Denise Trantham and Kris Supernaw who serve as team leaders host weeks are April 1, June 24, September 16 and December 9. For more information on how you can be a part of Family Promise, look for information on the Mission table in Fellowship Hall, talk with a leader or servant or contact Carolyn Malaski. 5 The Endowment Fund was established in 1990 with a bequest from Stuart and Ellen Ottaway. The Fund continues to accept contributions in honor of and in memory of individuals as well as from others who make a charitable contribution from their investments or retirement accounts. The majority of the funds have been invested with the United Methodist Foundation of Michigan. The Endowment Fund uses only the interest earned. Each year in November using the total value of the investment, the committee determines the amount of funds that are available for awarding grants the following year. Grants are available to support programs or projects that are not included in the regular church budget. To date, the following grants have been awarded: $300 scholarship for PlayPlace staff; $500 start up funds for Family Promise; $1,000 to Stephen Ministry for leader training; $115 for seminar expenses for Associate Pastor; $500 for 175th Anniversary Celebration and most recently, $400 for 2 new rocking chairs for the PlayPlace. Jim Thomas will be leading Christianity s Family Tree by Adam Hamilton in room 6, downstairs. This eight week class begins on April 15th. Adam Hamilton presents a welcoming, inspiring vision of eight Christian denominations and faith traditions. Comparing the Christian family to our own extended families, he contends that each denomination has a unique, valuable perspective to offer on the Christian faith. The traditions he examines are Orthodoxy, Catholicism, Lutheranism, Presbyterianism, Anglicanism, Baptists, Pentecostalism, and Methodism. For each group, Hamilton gives a brief history, outlines major beliefs, and describes some things we can learn from that tradition to strengthen our own Christian faith. Pastor Debbie will be leading Goliath Must Fall by Louie Giglio in the Heritage Room. The study looks at us having a threatening giant in your life... an adversary or stronghold that s diminishing your ability to live a full and free life. Frozen in the grip of rejection, fear, anger, comfort, or addiction, you ve lost sight of the promise God has for your life. Demoralized and defeated, you ve settled for far less than his best. God has a better plan for you a plan for you to live in victory. That s why he has silenced your giant once and for all. In looking at David and Goliath, we will learn how the key to living free from our giants is not better slingshot accuracy, but keeping our eyes on the one and only giant-slayer: Jesus. Put your hope in him, and watch Goliath fall. Look for sign up sheets in the entrance way.
6 National Day of Prayer Service On Thursday, May 3 we will gather as a Flushing community to pray for our nation. This year we will have a service at 7:00 pm at the Flushing Community Nazarene Church. We will have music and prayer together. There will also be a community choir. Save the date! Now is the time for us to clearly agree to pray in this manner for America: 1. Pray for unity of thought and strategy among our nation s leadership over these critical issues in America today. Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly and it will be given to him. James 1:5 2. Pray that we agree clearly, unite visibly, and pray extraordinarily for the next Great Spiritual Awakening in America. They all were continually united in prayer. Acts 1:14 3. Pray for God to intervene supernaturally across America as we call upon all Americans to pray for our nation on the National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 3, Making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Organizations represented are United Methodist Retirement Communities (UMRC) Foundation, Methodist Children s Home Society, and United Methodist Camp and Retreat Ministries. United Methodist Retirement Communities (UMRC) celebrates 112 years of caring for older adults and their families, offering Michigan s most diverse housing options and services to seniors of all income levels. The number of older adults is expected to double by 2030 and triple for those 85 and older. UMRC serves over 2,000 older adults and their families each year from 8 locations across twelve Michigan counties. UMRC s full continuum of care ensure our residents always have a home where they are loved and treasured. Since 1917, Methodist Children s Home Society (MCHS) has been providing life-changing programs and services to some of Michigan s most fragile children. MCHS provides individualized treatment, care, advocacy, and permanency to children and families who have been impacted by childhood trauma. Children who have survived abuse and neglect find a safe and comfortable place to call home through MCHS foster care, adoption, residential care, and transitional living services. With expert staff and life-changing programs, MCHS provides Michigan children and families the opportunity to heal from the past, heal, learn, and prosper, giving them a reason to hope and believe again and reclaim their future. The mission of Michigan Area United Methodist Camping is to Make Disciples of Jesus Christ. Through the programs offered at our nine camps, campgrounds, and retreat centers, we reach campers of all ages. The Golden Cross Sunday offering will be designated for camperships for any camper who needs extra help to get to camp. Our goal is to make sure no child is denied the life-changing experience of summer camp for financial reasons and for the Gospel message to continue to be spread.
