2 Greetings from the desk of the Pastor! We are officially off and running. I have a few quick notes I wanted to mention as we get to know one another better as Pastor and Congregation: Office Hours Some folks have noticed that it is difficult to catch me in the physical office during business hours. There are some days when I am in the actual physical office all day but those days are rare. We as pastors have been encouraged by the conference leadership to spend more time in the community and so every now and then I will pack up my laptop and disappear off to a coffee shop or the library or some other location with an outlet and an open table. (By the way if you know of any good coffee shops around, I m always looking for suggestions). Further, I often have meetings or engagements around town during the day. So if you would like to meet with me just stopping by probably won t work. I recommend you call the office and set up a specific time. I love to stay busy, but I will ALWAYS make time for my people. You matter to me a great deal, and I will make time for you. If all else fails, leave me a message I m pretty good at getting back to folks as soon as I can. Cell Phone People have also noticed that I do not publish my cell phone the way Debbie has done. It s not that it s a big secret, but I prefer church people to contact me through the church office. Here is why: I love my job. I love the work and if I m not careful I can VERY EASILY blur the lines between my professional and private life. Because I want to be a good husband and father in addition to a good pastor I have to draw my lines somewhere. Conference training has taught pastors to give firm boundaries with regard to when we are on and when we are off. Many young pastors burn out, and I enjoy my work far too much to let that happen. When you can t reach me always leave a message and I will get back to you. Many times things can wait until 9am on Monday.

3 Hospital Visits- What I have found in my short ministry is that sometimes people assume I already know about their hospital stay. However, I often have not gotten the news yet! If someone is in the hospital please let me know! Further, I want everyone to know that I WANT to visit you in the hospital but I am waiting for permission. I have found in my ministry that some people prefer privacy in medical situations, and so I do not default to showing up. I always like to know when my people are in the hospital for any reason, but I usually do not stop by unless I have been invited. Please do not feel as though I am ignoring you I m still getting to know who wants a visit and who would prefer some space. Hospitality I have one final piece I wanted to mention about hospitality in our worship services. I think Sunday morning worship services at Flushing have real potential, and I think we are really starting to feel the power of God amongst us. But I also believe there is more we can be doing to be even more hospitable particularly with our young people. I would like to challenge each of you to treat visitors as kings and queens among us and to treat children as royalty. Yes, they make noise. Yes, they can be messy or get in the way but if we do not make them feel welcome here, they will grow up to know God as unwelcoming. Speaking from personal experience it can be mortifying to have a noisy child in a worship space. Be kind and compassionate with young families. Let them know about our nursery but do not pressure them to be separate from their children. Let them be noisy in the sanctuary. Let them be messy. Give them space and help them feel welcome. All right, that s probably plenty for now and if you have any other questions please feel free to ask! We are just beginning our time together, but I can tell this is going to be a lot of fun. Until then, I ll see you on Sunday. By: Pastor JJ Mannschreck

13 Family Promise This summer has been a busy time for Family Promise. First was the 4th Annual Benefit Concert in June with all proceeds going to Family Promise of Genesee County (FPGC). A little over $1,200 was raised from donations! Thank you to Joe Williams for his efforts organizing the concert and FUMC s band, 1 Fifty, for hosting bands from four other churches in the FP Network. Next year we plan to return to Riverview Park for the concert. FUMC was represented at the annual FPGC 5K Walk/Run earlier this month. Thanks to Chris Anderson-who was our team leader and was joined by Judy Martz and Denise Sands. Next year we look forward to having more from FUMC on the team. A new director will be coming to FPGC. Lindsay Moore, our current director who has been with FPGC for 4 years and a board member for 3 years before that, has taken a position with Family Promise as a regional director. We wish her well as she continues to serve Family Promise. She will continue to volunteer at her church. Details on the open position are at the FP display in Fellowship Hall or can be sent to you by contacting Carolyn. We will host families September The host schedule and Wish List for food needed during the week has been posted in Fellowship Hall. New servants are always welcome. Contact Carolyn Malaski for more information. Our last host week for 2018 will be December Music Ministry Fall Schedule Paul McCartney said, "I love to hear a choir. I love the humanity, to see the faces of real people devoting themselves to a piece of music. I like the teamwork. It makes me feel optimistic about the human race when I see them cooperating like that". As Christians, music keeps people connected, teaches us how to work and serve together, and strengthens the spirit. We extend an open invitation to join our music ministry. If you do, you will feel warmth and support, enrich your life with music and friendship, while sharing the gift of your time and talent. Please join us!
