1 First Presbyterian Church September 11, :30 a.m. Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost Be reverent. This is the house of the Lord. Before the service, speak to God. During the service, let God speak to you. After the service, speak to one another. I will strive to enter that intimate space of Christ s radical love with you. GATHERING AROUND THE WORD Prelude Today We Are All Called to be Disciples arr. Jason Krug Welcome and Church Life Notes Sharing Joys and Concerns *Passing of the Peace - please share the peace & love of Christ with your neighbor Introit *Call to Worship Leader: Creation shouts! People: The world listens, waits, hopes. Leader: Creation creates! People: The garden grows and groans. Leader: God walks, loves, waits People: We come, we seek, we grow, we love, we worship. *Hymn All Creatures of Our God and King #15 Prayer of Confession Leader: Family of God, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God every time we turn toward our home and remember whose we are. With open hearts, let us pray. People: Creator of the universe, we imagine that we are in familiar territory, that we know what to expect of this hour, that we will leave much the way we came. Do not abandon us to our foolishness. In judgment, illumine our darkness. In mercy, bear us home until we recognize your presence wherever evil is confronted, truth is spoken, and life is restored. (A moment for silent personal prayer of confession) Assurance of Pardon Leader: But this we call to mind, and therefore have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, God s mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning. In the name of the Lord, who is our portion and our hope, I declare that our sin is forgiven. People: May our mouths be filled with praise. Alleluia! The Gloria *Choral Response Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost! As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be! World without end! Amen! Amen! Please contact Pastor Sarah, Nancy Althaus, or Gail Dibble if you would be willing to help out. THOUGHTS ON GIVING: Everything I have is yours. Luke 15:31 Our Heavenly Father gives us everything, including the chance to share in His eternal kingdom. Yet, like the Prodigal Son we are often lured away by the materialism of our society. 5 A Prayer for the Anniversary of Written by Rev. Kathryn Craven God of the faithful and profane, God of the lost and the found, here our voices today as a nation remembers. Fifteen years ago our stories changed. Planes turned into weapons, buildings were hit and fell, helpless passengers became heroes who decided their own ends, and many struggled to pick up the pieces inside and out. So many moments later we still lift prayers. We pray for those who floated up and away with the sweet-smelling concrete dust, for those who died in the impact of planes into building. We pray for those they left behind who still mourn. We pray for those who saw too much and are haunted by it by rapid responders and schoolchildren, by commuters and those looking out the window with morning coffee. We pray for those who rushed in when others were running away, we pray for those who came in working around the clocks to clear away the rubble to try and find one more life intact. We pray for the pain and suffering and death that followed them due to what they shifted and cleared away. We pray for those far away in every corner of the nation and beyond who had their own emotions of disbelief and anger and helplessness. We remember the American flags on car windows as if the entire nation was on its way to one, huge funeral. We pray for an innocence lost, yet again, as a new generation feels the vulnerability of being attacked. We pray in the wake of the attacks and wars that were started then that continue still. We pray for those who have fought, who are scarred inside and out, who come home to a reality they can t face. We pray for those lands and people who thousand fold have felt the fear and vulnerability we did that one, fateful day. We pray that we may continue to learn, to grow in the ways of peace and love, of justice and righteousness such that nothing like this and the aftermath ever happens again. Holy God, we pray for something too big to pray for. Help us remember the past in order to not repeat the mistakes. Help us love those who we would rather blame and fear. Help us have compassion, patience, love and humility. Help us ever be yours and show your face and love to others. Amen. A Prayer for the Anniversary of Written by Rev.
