The last bits of preparations are now in full swing. We have just a few HOURS left to get ready to celebrate the birth of Jesus and for some of us we might feel ready. For others of us, we are still not quite feeling the Christmas spirit. So, we pray that all will be blessed. This weekend we celebrate the 4 th Sunday of Advent and look to this coming Sunday evening and Monday for the celebration of Christmas. There is a great deal of scripture that helps us put the finishing touches on our Christmas preparations. For this 4 th Sunday of Advent we once again hear the familiar reading of the gospel according to Luke on the Annunciation. We hear about the Angel Gabriel coming to the young Mary with an impossible job offer anyone who had ever lived would hear. You have been chosen because you are blessed above all other women to be the mother of God s Son. Seemingly without hesitation, Mary says, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done to me according to your word. From that moment on, Mary is held up as a person who understands a sense of obedience we all could probably use as a lesson in trust. Do we trust God? The Christmas readings are what we often think about at this time of year. We hear the familiar story from Luke on the journey of the Holy Family. We hear about the Inn and no place to lay down the newborn King. We hear about the shepherds and angels. We ought to truly be moved by all of these and especially how they relate to us, our faith and our ability to share that faith with those little ones who gaze lovingly at all the decorations and wait for the coming of Jesus AND Santa too. As Advent ends and the Christmas season begins we still have a little time. We, unlike our secular brothers and sisters have a couple of weeks ahead to continue the celebration. We realize that Christmas, for us lasts until January 8 th when we will celebrate that final feast of Christmas, the Baptism of the Lord. I hope and pray you will keep up at least some decoration, perhaps your manger or even your tree until the END of this Christmas season. Will you do that for Jesus? Clearly, there are many families in the community for which this season is just brimming with joy, peace and excitement. To see the children s shining faces on Christmas Eve s family Mass is one of the great joys of the season. To revisit with family members who come home at this time is another joy. We share not only time and gifts with each other now but we also share the greatest gift of our faith in this family where it really does not matter what kind of decorations you might have up or, if you were able to buy any gifts this year. This season s most important aspect is about the coming together to wish each other well. Another most significant aspect we must remember this holy season is that group of our members who are struggling this season. We may not know who feels poorly due to health issues. We may not know those who are so struggling with finances that they cannot even share a special Christmas meal. We do not know how many folks cringe with each, Merry Christmas, because of the loss of a loved one this year. Hopefully, most all of those who would not have anything special this season have gotten some blessing, anonymous or known to allow them to celebrate in some special way. We pray especially for these people who are in pain. Finally, if you are travelling this week, please be safe an Come home with great memories. If you have family coming in to celebrate with you, enjoy them, love them and build great memories to last through the generations; these are the true gifts of Christmas for which Jesus came to bring salvation for all. December 24, 2017 Fourth Sunday of Advent GOD'S PROMISE The lengthy passage from Samuel is a wonderful exposition of God's promise to the house of David: that his throne would forever be gloriously occupied by his descendants. Hidden in the mystery of the prophecy is the promise of the Savior, the Messiah, Son of God and Son of David. The prophet Nathan, speaking in God's name, poetically turns around David's plan to build a house for God, and announces God's plan to build a "house," that is, a dynasty for David. From this house of David will come the Messiah, the Christ, not in kingly splendor as David ruled, but as a humble man, destined to rule forever and over all. When God gives a gift, it's amazing what we are given--so different from what we ever could have imagined. 5 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Children of the parish are somewhat focused on Santa Claus these days, who is keeping an eye on who's naughty and who's nice. Santa Claus, with his heavenly patron Saint Nicholas, has been more or less in charge of gift-giving to American children for a hundred years or so. In other places, perhaps more attentive to our Christian tradition, there are different gift-bearers. In Greece, Saint Basil delivers the presents on his feast day, December 31, and makes sure everyone is sprinkled with holy water. The Baby Jesus is in charge elsewhere, called the Christkind in Austria and Belgium, El Niño Jesús in Columbia, and Le Petit Jesus in France, where he shares his duties with Père Noël. In the Czech Republic almost everyone is atheist, but Je í ek, the infant Jesus, brings gifts to one and all. In Poland the "Star Man" is said to bring the gifts, although often he turns out to be the village priest in disguise. Saint Nicholas, not his Americanized cousin, is the giver in Holland, where he wears a bishop's miter, and in Russia, where he wears a bishop's crown. Soviet Russia tried to dethrone Saint Nicholas and promote Grandfather Frost, but no one was much fooled by this attempt to squeeze religion out of Christ's birth. One country has a saintly woman in charge of the gifts, Saint Lucy, honored in Sweden on December 13, when children serve their parents breakfast in bed, and others awake to news that they have been nominated for a Nobel Prize. Some children have a second round of gifts on Epiphany, when the magi assume the gift-giving duties. In general, the gifts of Christmas are simple pleasures, not great heaps of treasures. Once upon a time, a new pair of socks or an orange was enough for us. No matter what gifts we receive, all of them are to point us to the true gift, and the true giver. Panel Discussion on Clergy Abuse The Archdiocese of Santa Fe is holding a panel discussion on clergy abuse. The panel is available to answer questions, address concerns and give information.
