2 The Spirit of Advent. Mark Searle, in Assembly, Volume 7:1 Copyright Notre Dame Center for Liturgy, Notre Dame, Indiana Human beings cannot live without hope. Unlike the animals, we are blessed or cursed with the ability to think about the future and to fear our actions to shaping it. So essential is this to human life, that human beings cannot live without hope, without something to live for, without something to look forward to. To be without hope, to have nothing to live for, is to surrender to death in despair. But we can find all sorts of things to live for and we can hope for almost anything; for some measure of success or security or for the realization of some more or less modest ambition; for our children, that they might be saved from our mistakes and sufferings and find a better life than we have known; for a better world, throwing ourselves into politics or medicine or technology or education so that future generations might be better off. Not all these forms of hope are selfish; indeed, they have given dignity and purpose to the lives of countless generations. But one of the reasons why we read the Old Testament during Advent is to learn what to hope for. The people of the Old Testament had the courage to hope for big things: that the desert would be turned into fertile land; that their scattered and divided people would eventually be gathered again; that the blind would see, the deaf hear, the lame walk; that not only their own people, but all the peoples of the earth would be united in the blessings of everlasting peace. Clearly, their hopes were no different from ours or from any human beings lasting peace, tranquil lives, sufficiency of food, an end to suffering, pain and misery. Thus we hope for the same things as the Old Testament people, for their hopes are not yet realized. But we differ from them in two ways. First, the coming of Jesus in history, as a partial fulfillment of God s promises, immeasurably confirms and strengthens our hope. Secondly, we differ from the Old Testament people because Jesus has revealed to us that God is not afar off, but is already in our midst. Hence the importance in the Advent liturgy of John the Baptist and of Mary: because they recognized the new situation, they serve as models for the Church in discerning the presence of our Saviour in the world. Dear Parishioners: Pope Francis has called an Extraordinary Synod of Bishops on the theme, The Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context of Evangelization to take place at the Vatican in October It is unprecedented for a Pope, but our wonderful Pope Francis wants to hear from you on your lived experience of the challenges to Family Life in this day and age. The Synod Survey questionnaire asks about pastoral approaches and acceptance of Church teaching on a variety of topics, among them contraception, same-sex couples and families, divorce and cohabitation. The Vatican Questionnaire can be acquired from a variety of websites on-line Vatican Questionnaire for the Synod on the Family. The National Catholic Reporter (NCR) also carries it as well as a plethora of articles on this I advise you to send your reflections and responses directly to the Office of His Excellency, The Most Reverend Lorenzo Baldisseri,, General Secretary to the Synod of Bishops. This Office has the ultimate responsibility for collating the countless responses from around the world in preparation for the Synod. The office of Archbishop Lorenzo Baldisseri has declared that responses can be sent directly to the Vatican. The responses should be printed and sent by post or electronically to the following: SYNODUS EPISCOPORUM Via della Conciliazione, VATICAN CITY STATE synodus@synod.va Internet Sending their responses directly to the Vatican is preferable for many American Catholics. Some U.S. Bishops since the election of Pope Francis have made various negative remarks publically about Pope Francis. Some Bishops still remain lukewarm toward Pope Francis and his endeavors. Among them are Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia. Archbishop Chaput declared that he was not pleased with the results of the election of the last conclave. Recall that as Archbishop of Denver, Archbishop Chaput did not permit children of same-sex couples to attend the Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Denver. I guess this churchman will not be getting his red hat and elevated as a Cardinal of the Church due to his remarks and attitude. Again, I think it is better to send responses directly to the Synod of Bishops at the Vatican rather than to a local source as responses might be filtered through a pastor s personal agenda and Ecclesiology. Can you imagine a Catholic in the Philadelphia Archdiocese sending their responses to the Office of Archbishop Chaput? Knowing of his negative remarks towards the election of Pope Francis, the Archbishop of Philadelphia might filter whatever responses suit his agenda with and Ecclesiology within the Church. Remember that Pope Francis is trying to do away with careerism in the Church and has called careerism especially among bishops as leprosy. Years ago at the dinner table at The American College of Louvain in Belgium, Professor Peter Phan, SJ, from the Jesuit University of Georgetown was sharing with the table a story about the sad state of careerism in the Church. He shared with the group a story of a Monsignor in Dallas, Texas who was an acquaintance of his. Professor Phan taught Theology at Holy Trinity in Dallas at the time and would socialize with this Monsignor. One day, the Monsignor approached Peter Phan and said: Peter, everyone has different charisms in life. Your charism in life is to teach theology. My charism in life is to be a Cardinal of the Church, so let s not get in each other s way. I remember thinking as Professor Phan said this that I had never heard something so unhealthy in all my life. Please know that this Monsignor never became a Cardinal of the Church. We must really pity this person with such misplaced ambition. Professor Peter Phan said at the time, I fear that (Name of person) will die a very sad man if he never becomes a Cardinal. Such exciting times for the Church!!! Thank you, Holy Spirit of God for sending us, the good and wonderful Pope Francis!!! 3 St Therese School Open House St. Therese is a small school conveniently located in the north valley, minutes from I-25 and I-40. We offer lower student to teacher ratios which allow our students to exceed in their studies. Before and After Care from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. St. Therese Catholic School has been fostering faith, service and learning since Our Open House will be held January 30, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. For additional information, please call or visit our website at ww.stthereseschoolabq.org. Thank you. St. Pius X High School We would like to thank you for your generous support of St. Pius X High School by allowing our students the opportunity to sell raffle tickets at the Shrine of the Little Flower St. Therese of the Infant Jesus Parish this year. Each year, St. Pius depends on the generosity and support of the Catholic community to make our Student Activities fund drive a success. For over twenty years, this vehicle raffle has provided the primary underwriting for team and club activities as the school. The raffle is essential for St. Pius X to meet a primary goal: to keep tuition at its lowest and make Catholic high school education available to students regardless of their ability to pay. Your support is essential if we are to continue to offer Catholic education to our youth. This year we reached our goal, raising $156,042. Shrine of the Little Flower St. Therese of the Infant Jesus contributed significantly to St. Pius X 2013 raffles s success. It would be impossible to sell the number of tickets and generate the amount of money needed without the cooperation of your parish. A typical weekend of parish sales at all Masses generates $1000, so you can see how important your participation is to us. We would like to thank the members of your parish as well and would greatly appreciate your placing the attached announcement in your bulletin. On November 1st we drew the winning tickets after the All Saints Mass. The winning ticket was held by Rob Federici, the second prize winner for $500 was held by Betty Sleeter and the third prize winner of $100 was Julie McConnell.
