2 Third Sunday of Advent When Luke writes his gospel several decades after the Ascension, it is the Church, through the ministry of the apostles, which is conferring Christian baptism in the Spirit. His account is certainly not without a basis in history, but what interests him most is the history of salvation which continues to unfold in the primitive community. The expectation of an imminent end is fading. The Baptist s exhortations to conversion take on a new meaning. They are a challenge to transform our everyday lives. Today Luke introduces us to crowds of people of goodwill from every walk of life. Attentive to the Precursor s preaching, they have become aware that they must change their lives. Like them, we ask, What must we do? As the prelude to any conversion, we must renounce all self-sufficiency; we must acknowledge the necessity of being pierced to the heart by a word which will draw us out of ourselves. Thus in the circumstances of our own lives, we must accomplish the obligations of social justice, mutual aid and charity. We join those innumerable people who open their lives to the unforeseen, to form a people waiting,. Precursors still rise up among us. They prepare the way be setting before us the great questions of life and death. God s prophets refer to one more powerful than themselves, the one whom we await: Jesus Christ, who continually baptizes us in both fire and the Spirit. Midnight Mass Singers Wanted This year for the Midnight Mass of Christmas we will have a mixture of musical genre s at this Mass which is fully attended and includes visitors to our city who are looking for a Christmas Mass at Midnight. Saint Therese is one of the few Parishes in the city with a Midnight Mass at Midnight. The music will be bi-lingual. Our Sunday 8:00 A.M. Spanish Choir will be singing Christmas Carols in Spanish and leading the parts of the Mass. Gail Long will be leading a group of singers in English accompanied by Organ/Piano. With no family nearby, I am stranded physically and emotionally but thank God, Catholic Charities is here to help me out. January is poverty in America awareness month and in order to help raise awareness in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, the Office of Social Justice and Respect Life, in partnership with the Catholic Campaign of Human Development, is offering free presentations to all youth and adults. Presentations are designed to build awareness of the root causes of poverty and to help us realize what our call is as Catholics to help. Additionally, we are holding a Multi- Media Youth Contest, which is a great tool to help schools and parishes engage youth (7th-12th grades) in creative justice education. All forms of multi-media are welcome; painting, song, drawing, video, website, etc. The theme of this year s contest is, Be a Disciple! Put Two Feet of Love in Action.
