The beauties of nature, surely! And children. How Jesus rejoiced when little children climbed onto his lap! Let the little children come to me, he said. And what joy he must have felt when he brought physical and spiritual healing to people. The deepest source of Jesus joy, however, was his loving relationship with his heavenly Father, his Abba. Jesus tells us that wherever he might go, whatever he might do, he remains in his Father s loving embrace. Jesus wants us to have this joy, too. He tells us this in today s Gospel (John 15:9-17): I have told you this that my joy may be in you and your joy might be complete. And he adds: Remain in my love. How do we do this? Jesus explains at once: If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love. What is the commandment above all, that Jesus is talking about? He tells us this: Love one another as I love you. Jesus goes on to explain the kind of love he is talking about not just a warm, fuzzy feeling, but an active being. A committed love that gives and goes on giving. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. This is what Jesus did for us. That is what he asks us to do for one another. In our Second Reading today, from the First Letter of John (1 John 4:7-10), we hear this same message. Let us love one another, John says, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. And God revealed this love to us through the complete offering of himself, in the form of his Son, so that we could come to know God, love God, and have life in God. Who wouldn t find joy in experiencing that kind of life-giving love? Saying that love is the basis of authentic Christian joy does not mean that love is easy. Loving others is difficult at times. Not in the sense of how we feel, and whether we like them, but because of the selfishness and sacrifice that genuine love demands of us. And yet, it is precisely these demands that give love its joy: for the more we give of ourselves in love, the more room we make in ourselves for God who is nothing but love. As St. Francis of Assisi said, It is in giving that we receive. To love is to completely will the good of another; to desire nothing other than another s flourishing and growth in virtue. Let us pray for the grace to do and be as God asks of us; and may the Eucharist, the tangible Presence of God s unfailing love for us, transform us with that grace. CONFIRMATION MASS Page 3

3 May 6, 2018 Page 3 Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord In the Archdiocese of Santa Fe (as with most dioceses in the United States) the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord is celebrated on the Seventh Sunday of Easter (May 13 th ) rather than on Thursday of the Sixth Week of Easter (May 10 th ). Because of this, Thursday, May 10 th is NOT a Holy Day of Obligation. Our Lady of Fatima School is accepting registrations for the school year. From Thursday, April 12 th through Thursday, May 31 st, Our Lady of Fatima Parish will present an 8-part series by Dr. Edward Sri entitled Who Am I to Judge? Combining video presentation, group discussions, and a study guide, this series presents the one key in effectively responding to the moral relativism of our time: A Catholic moral worldview. Moral relativism denies that there are absolutes in matters of faith, truth, and morality. Everything is relative what is true for me is not necessarily true for you, and so on. In denying the existence of absolute truth, one is essentially denying the existence of God, for God is perfect truth and God is eternal and constant never changing. Learn how Catholic morality is all about love, how making a judgment is not judging a person s soul, and how, in the words of Pope Francis, relativism wounds people and is the spiritual poverty of our times. The eight weekly sessions will be held on Thursdays in Fatima-Gallagher Hall, with a morning session offered from 10:00 am to 11:30 am, and an evening session offered from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. The Active Adults group also sponsors field trips. Altar Servers Coordinator: Theresa Irvin A great opportunity for 4th graders and above to serve at the Celebration of the Eucharist. High school and college age parishioners are especially encouraged to serve. Blessed Mother Rosary Guild Coordinator: Jahna Wilmott The Guild handcrafts rosaries for free distribution to various ministries world-wide in order to promote Our Lady s cause for devotion to her son, Jesus Christ, and world peace. The first year Pre-Confirmation class is for 8 th graders as well as any older students who have not completed it. The second year Confirmation Prep class is for students in grades 9 thru 12. They must participate in a Weekend for Engaged Couples and attend an introductory class in Natural Family Planning. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM-The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is offered the third Sunday of the month after the 12:00 PM Mass. Arrangements are to be made in person at the parish office. A birth certificate is required. Parents and godparents must attend a Baptism class that is offered the first Wednesday of the month at 7:00 PM in Room 1 of Fatima-Gallagher Hall. Pre-registration for the class is required. Godparents must be at least 16 years old, confirmed and actively practicing their Catholic faith. If Godparents are married, they must be married according to the norms of the Catholic Church.
