1 St. Thomas Aquinas Church Iglesia Católica Romana 1501 South Atlantic Boulevard Monterey Park, California Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 10, 2016 From the desk of Our Pastor We have started the second half of 2016 Half of the year is gone. This first half has been good for us. We have welcomed many new members to our parish. Many have been baptized, some joined us from other places and countries around the world, we welcome them to our parish family. I thank you for all you do to make our parish a house of prayer. Our weekend and weekday Masses are part of the big picture of who we are as a parish community. Thank you for contributing food to the needy, volunteering in various areas of the parish such as Pastoral council, Finance council, fundraising events, Liturgical Ministers, Church Environment, etc. There are many volunteers who take communion to the sick. Emma Romero visits the sick at Monterey Park hospital every Friday and also does several home visits to homebound parishioners. We have volunteers from the Chinese community who do home visits every week and also give guidance to new parishioners. These are just a few examples of the spirit of care and hospitality in our parish. I am proud to be your pastor and to experience this care in our midst. Thank you for all the care you give to us priests. We never go to bed hungry. We get energized from this community and we feel blessed to be able to minister with you on a daily basis. Special thanks go to the parish staff who work hard to make sure the needs of all are met. Their patience and hospitality make us a unique parish. I am grateful for their teamwork. Thanks to Fr. Francis Li who assists with the Chinese ministry, and Fr. Francisco Sandoval who assists with the Spanish ministry. Mrs. Gloria Castillo, school principal, teachers and staff whose dedication to the future of our children is priceless are also appreciated. Thank you to Elsa Jimenez for her years of service as the Director of Religious Education. Following in her footsteps we welcome Sr. Rocio Nieto who joins us with a lot of energy and spirit of service. As we start the second half of 2016 let us build on to what we have in our midst, each other, and make the rest of the year centered on the gospel of Jesus Christ our Lord, who came to teach us to love and to serve one another. 2 Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) 2011 to 2016 Dear Parishioners, Among the many blessings we give to each other is the gift of education. Many of you over the years have contributed to the education of our school children through donations in the blue envelopes that you receive in your homes. This T.A.P donation is restricted and goes directly to assist families in who would not be able to attend St. Thomas Aquinas School and provide a catholic education to their children. This is what you have contributed over the years: $12, $12, $12, $10, $11, $13, On behalf of the families who benefit from your generosity, I thank you. May we continue to bring this good news to our families in the years to come. Kudos to ALL Fireworks Stand Participants From the Desk of Our Pastor In the past few weeks Henry Ayala has been asking for volunteers to help at the firework stand. I am very grateful to the over 50 parishioners and school parents who responded and donated over 500 hours of their time over the holiday weekend. Jesus Torres, a school parent co-chaired our efforts this year. Some of you decorated the area with flags. Peter Ruiz donated his mobile home for us to use. We had people and particularly Nancy Aros who spent hours waving the flags on Atlantic Blvd. to attract and invite people to stop by. All this was done in the spirit of STA where the love for our community is very evident in willingness to help out. Much appreciation to all of you who supported this event by purchasing fire works, working as volunteers, security guards, hospitality or in any other capacity. We thank God for the safety we enjoyed and the fun we all had. At the end of the day we had so much fun in the school area parking lot where families brought their purchased fireworks and fired them off with much patriotic spirit. We had potluck with pizza and all sorts of food. A special kudos to Henry Ayala and associates who stayed behind to clean up after the event. Please plan to join us next year for this great parish event that brings us together to celebrate our community and our independence as a nation and our dependence on God for all we have. Fr. National Needs Combined Collection Second Collection July 9th & 10th This weekend we will be taking up the National Needs Combined collection.

3 Save the Date Parish Fund Raiser at NBC Restaurant Sunday, August 21 5PM Come enjoy a ten course Chinese Banquet at famous NBC restaurant on Atlantic Blvd. We will have a professional DJ to lead you on the dance floor and we have a great entertainment line up consisting of: Temple City Dance Group, STA dance group, Songs by Ceci Lai, Songs by children of STA parish, a professional dancer, STA Agape group will sing and entertain, and Wangbao-He, respected composer of Chinese music, the violinist who performed last year will return! Tickets for this banquet will go on sale the weekend of July 16/17 for $55 a person. Invite your family and friends and buy a table for $550. Donations and/or door prizes are very welcome. National Needs Combined Collection Second Collection July 9th & 10th This weekend we will be taking up the National Needs Combined collection. Each year, your support of the National Needs Combined Collection makes it possible for the Catholic Communication Campaign to continue its television, radio, and print media ministry. Your gift strengthens the Church at home, and helps to provide basic pastoral resources and services to needy ethnic communities in scattered and isolated areas through the Catholic Home Missions Appeal. The information collected from these avenues of communication will be published in the bulletin and website and used by the pastoral council to formulate a parish plan for the future.
