2 From the Desk of..robert Aerts 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time 2018 Sept. 16th In our first reading today, Isaiah speaks about the early Israelites and the many persecutions they endured. Then Jesus underwent the same persecutions during his passion; the silence during his trial, the buffets and spitting on the road to Calvary, and finally death. Sometimes I feel like today our Church in under trial just as the Israelites were, and then just as Christ was. ln our second reading, St. James emphasized that to be saved we need not only faith, but that we also need works. What does he mean by works? How about love of neighbor and alms giving? St. Paul, in Galatians 5:6, 13-15, says that what counts is faith working through love. And, you shall love your neighbor as yourself. In our Gospel, from St. Mark, on the road to Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asks his disciples, Who do people say that I am? Many of the people thought He was John the Baptist, or Elijah, or one of the other prophets. Then He asks His disciples, but who do you say that I am? Peter responds, You are the Christ. We are all disciples of Christ s Church, and today Jesus asks us, Who do you say that I am? The easy answer is what the disciples answered. If we stop and think, we are all children of God. Therefore, Jesus is our brother as are all our earthly brother and sisters. When we look at them, do we judge them, dislike them, or even hate some of them? The homeless person we meet on the corner asking for help, do we look at them as if they were Christ, our brother in the Lord? Our priests, Christ s representatives here on earth, do we sometimes malign them, or not offer them the respect due their office? We may hate the things our brothers and sisters do, but we need to love them as we love Jesus, and then pray for them. We may not be able to help all the homeless people we meet, but once in a while we can offer them a small gift and we can always pray for them too. We may not like everything our assigned pastors do, but until we walk in their shoes, we need to respect them, support them, and pray for them daily as they lead us on our journey to heaven.
