1 Knights of Columbus NEWSLETTER Balboa Assembly Number 0040 XCIV February 2017 Number 08 California s Oldest and Busiest Assembly Averaging a Color Corps Callout er Week!
2 Knights of Columbus Balb oa Assembly number 0040 NEWSLETTER February 2017 XCIV Number 08 Navigators Corner Dear Sir Knights A few months ago Sir Knight Hugh Largey, Faithful Admiral took me to St. John of the Cross parish in Lemon Grove for a fund raiser. A visitor at the arish gave a speech about recruiting. In this message SK Jerry D Angelo, Faithful Navigator he emphasized the 3 R s: Recruit, Respect and Retain. The reason I bring this to your attention, as we recruit members, we need to show them respect and encourage them to participate in our Assembly. Lack of respect invites them to leave and/or find another parish. The bottom line is that if you see someone new, strike up a conversation, get to know him and always show respect. We all know how to do this. Let s all remember the 3 R s. Thank you to all the Sir Knights that have prayed for my well-being. Also, I am looking forward to the March 12th dinner for the new recruits -- Sir Joe will be the chef, not yours truly. I would also like to thank the operational director, SK Rene Trevino for his well-received information at our last meeting which we badly needed. God Bless you, God Bless the Knights, God Bless America. SK Girolamo Jerry D Angelo Faithful Navigator, (continued from s article) *The Nuremberg Chronicle is an illustrated biblical paraphrase and world history that follows the story of human history related in the Bible; it includes the histories of a number of important Western cities. Written in Latin by Hartmann Schedel, with a version in German, translation by Georg Alt, it appeared in It is one of the best-documented early printed books - an incunabulum - and one of the first to successfully integrate illustrations and text. Dear Brothers in Christ, Captains Corner Happy Valentine s Day - Happy Valentine s Month - Happy Valentine s Life! Everyday is Valentine s Day for us, men who call ourselves Knights, and, yes, for everyone who loves God and loves neighbor, who seeks to do the SK Greg Anthony, will of God and, thereby, lives his life within the Communion of Saints. Think about who Jesus is, and we know who St. Valentine is - think about who Valentine is, and we know who each of us is. A popularly ascribed hagiographical identity appears in the Nuremberg Chronicle.* The text states that St. Valentine was a Roman priest martyred during the reign of Claudius Gothicus. Valentinus was arrested and imprisoned upon being caught marrying Christian couples [How horrible! Shudder the thought!] and otherwise aiding Christians who were at the time being persecuted by Claudius in Rome. {Sounds kinda familiar to us Knights, doesn t it? } Helping Christians in St. Valentine s time was considered a crime. Sometimes, in the here and now, the place and time in which we live, it can seem that way to some of us. Standing up for Life by helping young mothers and fathers, for Marriage by speaking and living out the Truth of Male-Female complementarity, for Religious Freedom by sharing the Good News of Redemption-Forgiveness of Sins, all, can make some of us feel timid, or fearful... but only if we forget Who the True Author of Law really is. Remembering Who Jesus is and doing what Jesus commands takes away all fear. Thus, as Knights and Brothers in Christ, each of us joins himself with St. ope John aul II and all the Communion of Saints, affirming in thought, word and action, Non abbiate paura - Aprite le porte a Cristo! Knowing we are loved, in Truth, by the Almighty God of Creation, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, inspires and empowers each and every one of us to love, in Truth, one another. Thus, for Knights and other Saints, wherever we, in Truth, live and work and love, for ourselves and one another and whomsoever we help - today, tomorrow and forever - St. Valentine Lives! Vivat Jesus et semper adelante! SK Gregory Jon Anthony, of the Balboa Assembly SIR KNIGHTS! If any Assembly Officer cannot attend the meeting, please contact the to be excused. SK Greg Anthony gjanthony.esq@gmail.com Next meeting Thursday February 9, 2017 Columbus Club 4425 Home Ave, San Diego, CA Attire: Informal 6:30 M - Dinner österreichische schinkenfleckerl mit blattsalat provided by SK Greg Anthony, FC 7:00 M - Meeting page 1
3 The Eudists, cjm From the Desk of the Faithful Friar Fr. James D. Burson, CJM Congregation of Jesus & Mary Balboa Assembly No San Diego, California The Future of Roe The Supreme Court s infamous 1973 abortion decision remains an unsettling and unsettled issue Raw judicial power has not convinced Americans that Roe v.wade is right. In America, judicial decisions that are contrary to the dignity of the human person simply cannot be sustained over time. This is the lesson we learned long ago from those tragic court decisions which held that African-Americans were not entitled to the equal protection of our laws. This was precisely the approach resident Abraham Lincoln took regarding the Supreme Our responsibility as the leaders of the Knights of Columbus is to assure the continued growth and sustainability of our Order. This is our first and primary responsibility, said Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson during the Saturday business session Nov. 19. While we have other goals and activities that are necessary, everything we do depends upon membership. A key challenge facing the Knights, he said, is the need to recruit younger men and fathers of young families. Excerpts from the homily of Cardinal Donald Wuerl, addressing the attendees of this year s Supreme Convention, which focused on ope Francis call to be missionary disciples, Aug. 3, 2016 In this convention we recognize our theme, A Light to the Nations, as an expression of that evangelizing command to be disciples evangelizing witnesses. It is precisely to be A Light to the Nations that we are called as Knights of Columbus individually and as our Order to be a reflection of Jesus, who is the Light to the Nations.... Our Holy Father, ope Francis, offers us the perennial wisdom of the Church on how we do this. He tells us: Go out, encounter [and] accompany those who should be more fully with us. As we do this, we evangelize. Each missionary disciple has many qualities. There are a great number of identifiable characteristics of a new evangelizer.... First, we must be bold have courage. eter boldly stood up and announced the resurrection (cf. Acts 2:22-36). aul boldly went out and preached in all of the lands that he could reach (cf. Acts 19:21-22). You and I have to have that same serene, confident courage. The second characteristic of the new evangelizer is a sense of urgency. To share the monthly issue of Columbia magazine that each of us receives. I have made a practice for some time now of giving my copy, after I have read it, to a college student on one of our Court s 1857 decision in the Dred Scott case and laws on slavery. It was the right approach then, and it remains the right approach today. As we look ahead to how the new president will keep his promise to be pro-life, we remember the words of the current occupant of that office who at the beginning of his administration famously said, Elections have consequences. Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson Midyear Meeting Underscores Membership Growth and Sustainability The Light of Christ, the Light to the Nations many campuses. It can serve not only as a way to grow more deeply in the faith but as an invitation. The third characteristic of a Knight of Columbus evangelizing disciple is a connectedness to the Church. My brothers, the only Gospel message that we can proclaim, the only valid proclamation we have, is the one that is verified in the Church. That brings us to the final characteristic: The defining quality of every missionary disciple must be joy. My brothers and sisters, we announce a Risen Lord. We have received the words of everlasting life. I think one of the reasons that our Holy Father, ope Francis, is heard and received with such welcome is because he radiates the joy of the Gospel. So should you and I. Christ is risen and we are his heralds, his witnesses. As we take on the task to be A Light to the Nations, we simply remind ourselves of the joy and the truth of our Gospel message and the fact that because of our connectedness to the rock, to eter, you and I can always say we know someone who knows someone who brings us to Jesus.

This year featured a more significant Catholic presence as the Bishop of San Diego Robert McElroy was one of the featured speakers. Our Knights, Sir Knights, and their families had a major part to play among the estimated record 3,000+ walkers carrying Kof C Choose Life/ Defend Life signs, the 4th Degree Color Corps leading the ledge of Allegiance and many wearing this year s commemorative Lime Green multi-colored 3 Major California Cities Walk the Talk T- Shirts. Miraculously, the predicted heavy rains mostly bypassed this walk and the heavily advertised threat of Million Women ro-lanned arenthood Marchers at nearby downtown San Diego never came up to protest our peaceful celebration of Life. Thanks to all who were able and willing to come (especially our Sir Knights Security Guards - including our late Color Corps Commander Vince Garra. They are pictured in their bright orange Security Guard Shirts. The Walk was a success with everyone hearing inspirational speakers, interviews, and talking with approximately 40 pro-life Exhibitors.
