As you know, November is elections month and I would like us to reflect on the Knights of Columbus Catholic citizenship and Public Policy. The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic men s fraternal service organization whose mission is to witness to our Catholic principles of charity, unity and fraternity by performing spiritual and corporal works of mercy locally and throughout the world. The Knights of Columbus believes that the best way to renew society and build a true civilization of love is through the personal witness of its members to the love of Jesus Christ. The Knights of Columbus gives no more compelling witness to the love of Jesus Christ than when its members are united in fraternal bond performing charitable works. In addition to performing charitable works, the Knights of Columbus encourages its members to meet their responsibilities as Catholic citizens and to become active in the political life of their local communities, to vote and to speak out on the public issues of the day. Corporate Communion Our Corporate Communion at St Benedict Church on Sunday October 12 th at the 12:00 Mass was less then well attended but for the first time in our assembly s history we complied with ARTICLE IX Annual Communion Sunday of our Assembly by-laws. Father Eddie was very cordial in his greeting and introduction of our group to the congregation. He also gave us recognition during his homily and at his final blessing of the Mass. I am confident that next year our attendance will be much better. To make Corporate Communion Sunday easier to remember in the coming years it will fall on the Sunday before Columbus Day. The only discussion regarding this is the church rotation to cover all parishes our assembly represents. Assembly Officers Shirts and Hats The officer s embroidered shirts which include our logo, our assembly number and their name are at the KC Hall for pick-up our final price was $25 for both the shirts and hats. If you haven t paid for them please bring a check or cash and drop it of at the hall next time you are by Memorial Mass for our Fallen Brother Sir Knights will be held on Thursday November 6th at 6:30 PM. At the 4315 KC Hall. Sir Knights and one (1) guest are invited. RSVP for dinner is required by October 31st No Exceptions. It is on the back burner awaiting the New Master to get a handle on his schedule. I would like to mention a couple of turnouts that are coming up in the near future. First is the Color Corps for the memorial mass that is being held at the KC hall on Rigsby on November 11th at 6 PM. The next one is on November 11th at St. Benedict Church at the 8 AM Mass which will be a Veterans Memorial Mass. You don t need full regalia to participate in this one. I also would like to mention for the Sir Knights that can t button their buttons or tie their ties or can t stand for a long time don t let that stop you from participating in turnouts. Just bring your regalia and we help each other put it on right and straighten out our regalia and if you can t stand for long periods just let us know we can make accommodations for you. The important thing is that you show charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. We all need help in some things or other. SK Greg Haag, Captain Greetings Sir Knights, At one of the three meetings I attended recently, at either the Assembly 1855 meeting, the 1208 meeting or the ASA Chapter meeting, I overheard a brother Knights saying to another brother that, he liked the speaker at the meeting and the organization he represented but commented, What can they do for us? I think this brother is a little confused; I wanted to say something but after thinking about it I thought it would be best not too. As I recall, charity is a major principle of our order, which to me means helping out whenever possible and whoever we can without expecting anything in return. The cliché, It's not what they can do for us but rather it s what we can do for them, just didn t ring in that brother s mind. Recently, I had such an enlightened experience! I have been attending a weekly bible class at my church, St Ann s, in La Vernia, which is being taught by a young man, Jeff Cavins, a very entertaining and a very good teacher, by the way. The class is about two hours long and the first half of the class consists of a group discussion about the Bible reading lessons had that week. At the second half of the class we watch a video presented by Jeff. We often have a light turns on experience during our table discussions. At one of those discussions we were talking about the mother church and a light turned on, I came to the realization that even though I attend the 9:30 AM Mass regularly my Christian duty is much more then simply attending mass. You see, the church I attend is Catholic and the word Catholic means universal in extent; involving all; of interest to all. So, when I help someone or some group how can I possible be helping and thinking, What am I going to get back from them? As Catholics, our mission is to help others, less fortunate or not, interested in all, involving all. That s what the attraction to Catholicism is all about. And for that reason, brothers, is why we are to practice our Orders principals of Charity - Our Catholic faith teaches us to Love thy neighbor as thyself, Unity None of us is as good as all of us, Fraternity In the Knights of Columbus, we watch out for and take care of one another, and Patriotism Proudly devoted to God and country, and believe in standing up for both. 5 Page 5 Continued from pg. 2 / FN Report Catholic faithful to build a society consistent with Gospel values when it states, By reason of their special vocation, it belongs to the laity to seek the kingdom of God by engaging in temporal affairs and directing them according to God s willd. Thus especially by the witness of their life resplendent in faith, hope and charity, they must manifest Christ to others. In the political realm, this means opening our public policy efforts and deliberations to the life of Christ and the teachings of the Church. In accord with our Bishops, the Knights of Columbus has consistently maintained positions that take these concerns into account. The Order supports and promotes the social doctrine of the Church, including a robust vision of religious liberty that embraces religion s proper role in t he p r ivat e and p ublic spheres. The Knights of Columbus supports policies that promote a Culture of Life and opposes legislative efforts that promote pornography, contraception, sterilization, cloning, the destruction of embryos, abortion, assisted suicide, and euthanasia. As Blessed Pope John Paul II once said, Abortion and euthanasia are crimes which no human law can claim to legitimize. There is no obligation in conscience to obey such laws; instead there is a grave and clear obligation to oppose them by conscientious objection. The Knights of Columbus also promotes the dignity and the irreplaceable value of the family founded on the Church s understanding of marriage as the faithful, exclusive, and lifelong union of one man and one woman joined in an intimate partnership of life and love. Altogether, we are called to promote a civilization of love that is possible when the law honors the dignity of marriage and the dignity of each human person from conception to natural death. The Order joins with our bishops and the national bishops conferences throughout the world in their efforts to achieve legal and constitutional protection for human life, religious liberty, and marriage at the national, state, territorial, and local levels. If a candidate for public office displays a sustained commitment to policies conflicting with these reasonable goals, we reserve the right to withhold our votes from such a candidate. If such a candidate prevails, we will express our principled disagreement with his or her policy choices as informed Catholic constituents. In all of these efforts prayer is indispensible. We will pray that the Holy Spirit enlighten elected officials and judges to adopt laws and make judicial decisions that respect religious liberty and affirm life and the authentic nature of marriage.
